Chapter 10: Chapter 10: Upgrades and Choices
Ghaz'Rok eyed the book in his hands, its leather cover rough against his fingers.
The title, "Basic Magic Skills for Swordmages," was embossed in faded silver lettering. It was nothing flashy—just an introductory guide to weaving magic into combat.
Across the counter, Tesion, the elf shopkeeper, leaned forward, his expression hovering between amusement and disdain.
"You know," the elf said smoothly, "you could just pay for it and have it forever."
Ghaz grunted. "How much?"
Tesion's smirk widened. "For you? I'll even give a discount—just two silver and ninety-nine copper."
Without hesitation, Ghaz slapped down three silver coins and turned without waiting for his one copper in change.
"Keep the change," he muttered as he walked out.
Tesion huffed, shaking his head. "Orcs and their manners."
Outside the shop, Ghaz leaned against a stone wall and flipped open the book. Before he could get past the first page, the system's familiar sarcastic voice chimed in.
[System Alert]
[Wow. You finally picked up a magic-related book. Only took you… what, a week?
Good job, champ.]
Ghaz rolled his eyes. "What do you want now?"
[Upgrade Required for Detailed Class Information]
[Cost: 1 Mana Crystal]
[Reward: You actually get to know what these classes do before picking one. Amazing, right?]
Ghaz exhaled sharply. He really didn't want to spend his only mana crystal, but knowing more about his options was better than picking blindly.
"Fine. Take it."
As Ghaz reluctantly handed over the lone mana crystal for the system upgrade, he couldn't help but frown. He had a feeling these things were valuable, but he barely understood why.
Ghaz decided to ask the system the question nagging at him.
"Alright, what exactly are mana crystals?"
The system, as always, responded with an insufferable level of sarcasm.
[Oh, look at you, finally asking the important questions. Well, since you clearly need a lesson—Mana Crystals are condensed magical energy, either naturally formed or harvested from creatures infused with mana. They're used for spellcasting, enchantments, and, in your case, making questionable decisions.]
[Every living being has at least 1 mana by default, like a starter pack for existence. Orcs, however, are built differently. Instead of casting spells, their mana naturally strengthens their bodies over time. But, congrats! With your class choice, you now get to experience real magic—assuming you don't waste it.]
Ghaz exhaled through his nose.
"So, they're valuable?"
[Oh no, they're totally useless. That's why people kill for them. Of course, they're valuable! They can fuel spells, power artifacts, and—oh, I don't know—pay for important system upgrades instead of gathering dust in your pocket.]
Ghaz rolled his eyes. "Great. And I just spent mine."
[Yep. No refunds.]
Shaking his head, he focused back on the class selection. Whatever changes were coming, he had already committed.
[Upgrade in Progress…]
[Congratulations! You are now slightly less ignorant.]
A faint warmth spread through Ghaz's chest as the system adjusted itself.
[Upgrade Complete!]
[New Feature Unlocked: CLASS DETAILS AND STATS!]
Available Classes:
1. Orc Sword-Swinger (A combat class focused on brute force and swordplay. High strength, low finesse. Good at making people stop breathing.)
2. Orc Brute (A walking siege weapon. Who needs a shield when your body is one?)
3. Orc Pugilist (Close-quarters fighter specializing in bare-knuckle combat. Your fists are now classified as blunt weapons.)
4. Orc Shaman (Harnesses spirits, minor elemental magic, and mystical healing. Smells like incense and bad decisions.)
5. Orc Nerve-Stitcher (A rare blend of orcish durability and medical precision. Uses mana to restore nerves, muscles, and even limbs. Unlike shamans, you don't rely on spirits—you manipulate the body directly, forcing it to heal in ways it shouldn't be able to. Congratulations, you're now a back-alley doctor with magic.)
Ghaz'Rok's eyes lingered on Orc Nerve-Stitcher. His fingers twitched involuntarily.
In his past life, he had been a neurosurgeon. A healer. Someone who worked with precision rather than raw power.
Now, with his brother missing an arm, there was only one real choice.
"I'm picking Orc Nerve-Stitcher."
[Class Selected: ORC NERVE-STITCHER]
[Oh wow. You actually made a smart decision. Didn't think you had it in you.]
As soon as the system confirmed his class selection, something inside him shifted.
A deep, electric hum settled into his bones. His skin tingled, and a strange pull spread through his fingertips, like invisible threads tugging at the air around him.
Then came the heat.
Not painful, but overwhelming—a deep, rolling warmth that spread through his arms and chest. His heartbeat pounded in his ears. The world blurred for a moment as something changed.
When the sensation finally faded, Ghaz staggered slightly, bracing himself against the wall. His breathing was heavy, his body adjusting to whatever the hell had just happened.
Then he noticed it.
The black markings.
Starting from his fingertips, creeping up his arms in jagged, vein-like patterns, curling around his biceps and stretching toward his collarbone. Faintly glowing, but only when he focused.
[System Alert]
[Oh yeah, forgot to mention: Orc Nerve-Stitchers don't get their mana naturally like shamans do. Normally, an orc's mana pool grows over time, but you? You cheated the system, buddy. Now your mana sensitivity is running on overdrive.]
Ghaz flexed his fingers. He could feel something in the air—thin currents of energy, shifting like unseen threads. He had never noticed them before.
[Neat, huh? Try not to pass out.]
Ghaz exhaled sharply. His muscles still ached from whatever just happened, but he felt… different.
Not just stronger.
Sharper.
The system chimed again.
[Do you want to see your stats?Come on. You know you're curious.]
Ghaz hesitated. He had never been the kind of man to obsess over numbers, but after what just happened? Yeah. He needed answers.
"…Show me."
