Chapter 35: Old Friend
"Alright, Ben, we've arrived," Max announced as the morning sun cast its light upon the city. The rust bucket parked by the road, and Ben's excitement was palpable.
"We're here! We're here! We're here! We're here!" Ben chanted joyously, rushing out of the rust bucket.
"The line's already big," Max remarked as they all got out.
"I'm sure they won't take long, right?" Gwen said, thinking a game as lame as Sumo Slammers wouldn't be popular. She believed they'd buy the game and get on their way, but that wasn't the case.
Fred decided to stay inside the rust bucket, parked near the store. From the window, he could see the others queuing. Hours passed, and the line only grew longer. Max and Gwen started to complain as it felt like the line wasn't moving at all.
"Urgh, just how long are we supposed to wait?" Gwen grumbled.
"Can't you just get it later?" she suggested.
"I would if I could, but it's first come, first serve. If it's not today, then I won't ever get it," Ben explained, determination in his voice.
"Now that's just an exaggeration. Anyway, how 'bout we head to that smoothie store and get something to drink, cool off a bit, and when we come back, the line will have shrunk," Max suggested.
"No way. If I move away now, then I'd have to start all over at the back. You guys go without me," Ben said. "Oh, and get me a grape-flavored smoothie."
Max looked at Gwen, seeing in her eyes that she wasn't going to stand there any longer. He didn't want to wait either, so they both left for a smoothie joint across the street.
"Haaaa," Gwen sighed with relief as she entered the store. The AC cooled her down as she went and took a seat. She and Max took their time, enjoying their smoothies there.
Meanwhile, back in the rust bucket, Fred was tinkering with some holograms, adjusting the design of his newly acquired ship. "Right, those guys are currently in suspended animation. I should do something about them..." He muttered, considering wiping their memories and changing them genetically. "It'd be cool if I made them into anime characters like maybe I could turn that tall guy into an imitation of Demiurge, and the short one could be..."
Fred's muttering was interrupted when something caught his eye. "Kevin?" he said, recognizing the figure. "Right. Just how messed up is this guy? It's a miracle he changed. Anyway, I wonder how I should deal with this. I do like the older version of Kevin, but he's causing a ruckus right now," Fred said, spotting a rampaging Four Arms by the store.
"I miss the store AC already," Gwen said as she and Max arrived back at the store where Ben was waiting. Max held two smoothies as they walked.
"What in the? Ben," Max remarked, seeing Four Arms crashing out of a building with cops chasing after him. Four Arms picked up a random car on the side of the road, throwing it at a police car. A couple of military-like vehicles arrived shortly after.
"Step aside and let us handle this," a person commanded, stepping out of the leading vehicle.
"And who are you, interrupting official police duty?" a cop replied.
"My name is Lieutenant Steel of the Special Alien Containment Team," the person introduced himself.
"That doesn't sound good," Gwen said. A flash of light caught Max's eye, and as he looked, he saw it was Fred signaling from the rust bucket. He grabbed Gwen and headed towards it.
"Focus on clearing all civilians nearby. We'll handle this guy," Steel ordered.
Max and Gwen made their way into the rust bucket, finding Ben there wearing earphones. As they looked outside, they saw Four Arms running amok. "What in blazes is going on?" Max demanded.
Gwen plucked an earphone from Ben's ear. "Umm, hello, aren't you a hero? Your twin is running amok over there, and you're just playing games?" she scolded.
"Aw man, game over, not cool," Ben complained as Gwen made him lose the game. He turned to see what she was talking about.
"That's Kevin. I wanted to intervene, but I withdrew for now and only used teleportation magic to protect the people. Right now, there are no casualties," Fred explained.
"Kevin! You mean Ben's crazy friend?" Gwen asked, shocked. She remembered that Kevin had managed to run away, but now he was back as an alien. Could he be like Ben?
"Could he be like you?" Gwen asked Fred, full of concern.
"Kind of," Fred replied. "He's probably partly Osmosian like me, but I'm a special case even for my kind," he said. "Rest assured, unlike me, he probably only has access to the aliens Ben had when he absorbed it."
"That's still a lot, though," Max remarked, his experience as a plumber making him wary of Kevin's potential danger.
"Yeah, and actually, there's more," Fred added. "Remember when I said I'm a special case?" he asked.
"Yeah," Gwen replied.
"Well, absorbing that much power would make normal Osmosians go crazy, so it's kind of forbidden. But as I said, I'm different," Fred explained.
"So you're saying if Kevin continues like this, he'll go crazy?" Gwen asked, her voice filled with worry.
"Basically, yes," Fred confirmed.
"Well then, it just means we'll have to act fast," Max said decisively. "Ben, turn into that bounty hunter alien and track down Kevin," Max ordered as he started the rust bucket. "Is there a way to save him?" he asked Fred.
"I can suppress his powers using one of my aliens," Fred said, thinking about the options.
Ben transformed into Hunter and flew out of the rust bucket, heading towards the scene to analyze traces of Kevin. With Fred's help, Ben had learned to control the two new aliens unlocked for him.
"There's another one!" a person shouted, spotting Ben hovering above the scene.
"Hurry up, would ya?" Gwen said, ready to follow in the rust bucket. Fred handed Ben a communication device, which Gwen now used to nag him.
