Chapter 83: Just One Hit

The seventh day came with fog draped over the village like a funeral shroud.

Inside the longhouse, Ser Sedge pored over parchments, planning tax rates and drafting inventories. He hadn't dressed for combat. There was no need.

Rann entered.

"He's outside."

Sedge didn't look up. "You're joking. I made sure he wouldn't walk for a week."

"See for yourself," Rann said quietly.

With a sigh, Ser Sedge rose and walked to the doorway. The cold air greeted him, as did the broken figure standing in the clearing Levi.

He was thinner now, barely holding the wooden sword in hand. Dark eyes stared out beneath a bloodied brow, as though death itself dared to look back.

Ser Sedge stepped outside. "I hope you land your hit today, boy," he muttered. "Because I intend to put you to sleep."

The test began again.

Levi swung slow, wide, clumsy.

Sedge struck, and Levi crumpled to the dirt. Dust flew. He lay still, panting.

The knight turned his back. "It ends here," he said.

Levi's fingers twitched.

His left hand reached for the ground scooping dirt into his palm.

One of the guards Hunn noticed and raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

Levi rose.

Ser Sedge turned, annoyed. "It's over. I said—"

Levi hurled his sword at him a foolish, desperate act.

"Foolish!" Sedge roared, swinging to deflect it.

But just as he did, Levi flung the dirt.

Ser sedge covered his face, making sure nothing went to his eyes.

Ser sedge doubt in his face .

In the moment of confusion, Levi charged. One final push. One last strike.

The fist cracked against Ser Sedge's cheek.

The knight staggered with a step back.

Silence.

In the knights temporary anger he hits levi.

Levi stood there, swaying. As the wooden sword game hitting him. His lips parted as if to say something then his eyes rolled back, then as his body with the force of the hit he collapsed.

Ser Sedge stood still, touched his cheek where the fist had landed. He did not speak.

Rann and Hunn rushed forward, lifting Levi's limp body.

Rann muttered, "He fights like a man willing to die for this village."

Hunn added, "But... he didn't use the sword. Not really. Dirt and desperation."

They looked back at the knight.

Ser Sedge said nothing. Just stared down at the boy.

Something unreadable passed through his eyes a mixture of disapproval... and respect.

Then he turned back toward the longhouse without a word.
