Chapter 88: Brothers and Books.

After a warm meal, I sat alone in my home the scent of Food still lingering in the air when all a sudden a knock echoed at the door.

I stood and made my way to answer.

"Levi," someone called softly through the wood.

I knew the voice immediately. "Jory," I whispered, smiling as I opened the door. There he stood taller now, a little older in the face.

"Hello, my friend. What brings you here? Come inside. Have you eaten? I've already had my meal, but I can make something for you if you're hungry."

"No, thank you," he said, stepping in with a look that wasn't casual, his expression was serious.

He sat across from me, eyes locked on mine.

"I want to join," he said.

I blinked. "Join what?"

"The guards. I want to be trained. I want to stand beside you, not behind you.""I'm growing too, Levi. I don't want to just play with the younger kids anymore, or help my mother only when she needs me. I'm tired of waiting for my father to return from every merchant trip."

His words hit deeper than I expected.

"When we went to Moat Cailin, that was the first time it felt like I was part of some great adventure."When we went with Lyle to the crannogmen… during your trial, I just waited. I hated that feeling being useless not doing anything."You brought change to Bogwater, Levi. But I want to change too. I need to be close to you to do that."

I sat in silence, stunned by his honesty. I thought back to the first day we met. Ten moons ago? Fifteen? I couldn't remember exactly. But I remembered the stone he threw at me, A stranger in his home. Now here he was, asking to walk with me into whatever came next.

I smiled.

"It's going to be hard," I said, my tone serious. "Cruel, even. You sure about this?"

"I am," he said, without hesitation. "And I'm not the only one. Lyle wants to join too. So do the other Bogwater boys."

I nodded slowly. "I'll see what I can do. You'll be the first to know when it begins."

His eyes lit up. He raised his fist.

"Hell yeah!"

I laughed and lifted my cup of swampberry juice.

"To brothers."

He took the cup I handed him and clinked it against mine.

"To brothers."

We talked more as the sun dipped lower in the sky. Eventually, Jory left with a grin on his face accomplishing his purpose with every step he takes.

After Jory left i thought id be left alone now.

Another knock.

I let out a long breath. Getting plenty of visitors today, I thought.

I opened the door to find the old Maester, carrying that ever-present smile.

My own face fell slightly. By the Old Gods… am I really going to experience another college life of education again?

"Come in, old Maester," I said with a half-forced smile. "I'm sure I have more to learn."

"I knew you were a curious one," he said, stepping inside. "And I've come to feed that curiosity."

I still couldn't tell if his smile was sincere or mocking maybe both.

The lessons resumed as candles flickered low. The night grew deeper, and the old Maester finally stood to leave.

"We'll continue as usual. Hopefully, one day you'll become a great man."

There was a moment I nearly asked him something Why? Why do you teach me like he has sworn to my house like all other Maesters? Why act this way?But I held back. The question could wait. I didn't want to ruin whatever this strange friendship was.

"I haven't eaten yet," I said. "If you're hungry, I can cook."

He shook his head. "No need. I've work to finish."

He paused at the door, glancing back.

"Now that your body has healed, Ser Sedge will want to begin your training.""And don't worry about taxes excise, tolls, customs, silver levies. This town is already making coin. People will pay taxes.""As for those under your employment, I've made sure they're being paid. Those without work will be assigned when needed the taverns are still under construction, and only one stable is currently operational. It holds five grown horses and has four workers assigned."

"The coin earned by Bogwater is being held by me for now I hope you don't mind. I still need those funds to keep things running. When the time is right, I'll hand it over to you since I'm mere keeping it for safekeeping."

"And Levi you're earning a lot. More merchants are passing through from the south."If this town becomes fully fortified, armed, and connected to your merchant roads, you may become very wealthy."You're only fifteen give or take… and already the richest young merchant in the Neck. Give it time, and you might be the richest in the North when your older."

He chuckled.

"But that's enough for tonight. I need to leave. You need rest. You'll have much to do tomorrow."

I nodded, genuinely moved.

"Thank you… for everything. I don't think I could've done any of this without you. I'd have been swallowed by all this chaos without you."

He didn't answer just offered a quiet smile and stepped out into the fog.

I stood by the door a moment longer, watching him go.

Truly, I thought, what an eventful day.
