Chapter 96: Levi's Return

As Levi found his way out of the swamps, the walls of Bogwater came into view through the thinning mist. His legs felt heavy, each step dragging from the endless time of wandering. The toll of survival weighed on his body and mind, but the sight of his home gave him strength.

At the gate, townsfolk passed by, carts rolled, and the smell of life drifted through the air. Levi sighed with relief. Home still stood. Life still moved.

A guard near the gate noticed him.

"Who are you?" the man called, stepping forward cautiously.

Levi looked up with a tired grin. "My names Levi. I know I look like I spent a lifetime in the swamps, but I live here. The armor's battered, my clothes are worse, but trust me, friend. I belong."

The guard furrowed his brow. He remembered the name. The builder. The one who led the twenty young men into training. Still, with thefts and impersonators in recent days, he hesitated.

"Alright," the guard said slowly. "You can go in. But know this someone else tried to come back the same way. Stole from the town. I'll let the others know you're here. If it's truly you, we'll find out."

Levi nodded. "Seems Ser Sedge kept the town sharp." He smiled faintly and passed through.

First, he went home. The door creaked open with familiarity. He stripped off the armor and bathed, scrubbing away weeks of grime. Then he cooked swampberries, lizard meat, hard bread, and cheese. He didn't use the Cheat Engine. Not once in the swamps.

"If it ever leaves me," he whispered to himself, "I wont fall apart."

He ate quietly. No visitors. No interruptions. Just peace.

And when he saw his bed, Levi collapsed into it, not caring that the sun still shone. His eyes shut, and sleep took him.

Morning came again. A knock at the door pulled him from dreams.

Levi rose up from bed and went to the door and opened it.

Gran Mae stood on his porch.

"Good, you're back," she said flatly.

Levi blinked, still shaking off sleep.

"Guards and townsfolk were talking yesterday," she continued. "Someone named Levi returned, all muddy. Now I see it's true. You've been gone four moons. People thought you died. It's good to know you're alive."

She turned without waiting.

"Thank you, Gran Mae for caring." Levi called softly.

She didn't reply, but the warmth lingered in his chest.

Levi dressed quickly. If what she said was true four moons, not three then a lot of things must have changed and happened while he was gone.

He made his way to Jory's house. Before he reached it, a loud voice shouted behind him.

"Levi!"

He turned to see Arl, loud as ever, grinning wide.

"Arl," Levi said, smiling. "My loud friend. It's good to see you."

They embraced like brothers.

"By the Old Gods, we thought you were dead!" Arl said. "Everyone came back some early, some just in time. Some straggled, but they all returned. Except you. We waited a moon more, and still nothing. Jory and Lyle wanted to look for you, but Rann and Hunn said if they did, you'd fail."

Levi chuckled. "Sounds like them."

"Come, we go to Ser Sedge. Most of us work under him now. You've been gone too long."

Together, they walked through Bogwater. Familiar faces nodded. Curious eyes followed. At the longhouse, two young guards stood watched not Hunn or Rann, but two of the boys who trained with them.

They smiled when they saw Levi.

"Brothers," Levi greeted. "Good to see you."

They nodded. Arl clapped one on the shoulder. "We'll celebrate tonight at your place. For now, let Levi see Ser Sedge."

Levi entered alone.

Arl stayed behind. "I'll gather the others," he called. "Expect stories!"

Levi nodded and knocked at Ser Sedge's office.

A pause.

Then, "Come in."

Levi opened the door. Ser Sedge sat behind his desk, quill in hand.

Levi stood tall. "I'm back."

Ser Sedge looked up, then smiled. "Welcome home, young man. We have much to discuss."
