Chapter 6: Chapter Six - A Great Friendship
Who would have thought that my friendship with Liliya—which, let's admit, had started very poorly—would become one of the things I cherished the most, alongside my family? Liliya was kind, cheerful, and devoted. I now consider her almost like a second little sister or sometimes like my twin, even though we're exactly 1 year, 3 months, and 19 days apart (Note: This means Liliya was born on September 24, 1474). But as Liliya always says, "When you love, you don't count."
We've grown incredibly close since the lake incident. Almost every day, I go to see her—much to the dismay of Tatko, who wasn't thrilled that I became friends with a Dragonov too. Fortunately, Mama eventually managed to get him to let it go, though it wasn't easy. That said, I'm not claiming he accepted it unconditionally. You can probably guess the condition.
No magic for me and Liliya isn't allowed to cast spells on me! And I can assure you, Tatko keeps a close watch to make sure no kind of spell is cast on me.
By the way, Liliya has now become an excellent traveler. Adelia constantly brags about her daughter's potential, much to Liliya's chagrin—she doesn't like being the center of attention.
But only I know that.
Aleko, on the other hand, is getting taller, stronger, and—unfortunately—handsome. I think it's clear, that despite becoming friends and later, best friends with his little sister, he and I still don't get along. As Liliya often says, we're like cats and dogs.
In my defense, he's the one who starts most of the trouble… I only retaliate. It's not my fault if I 'accidentally' spilled my glass of sage wine on his face… I tripped over my own feet…
Anyway... Today, I turned ten, and to celebrate my birthday, Tatko and Mama decided to take us to the lake to play and swim. And the best part? Liliya is coming too.
As soon as we arrived at the lake, Natalia and Liliya insisted that I close my eyes for a surprise. Confused but curious, I did as they asked—only to end up splashing into the water!
"Chestit Rozhden den, Katerina!" (Happy Birthday) they laughed.
They didn't just do what I think they did… Did they? It's moments like these that make me question whether it's a good thing that Liliya is so loved by my family. Well, time for revenge—after all, I'm Katerina Petrova! I can't let such an affront to my dignity go unpunished!
"Have you finished your internal monologue, Katerina? Because it's getting a bit long!" Teased Liliya.
Where did the adorable three-year-old go—the one who used to struggle with pronouncing certain words? I miss that version of her…
"Come on, Liliya let her brain's 'intellectual organ' take its time draining all the water that just got in her head!" Natalia added, mocking me even more.
Why is so much hate directed at me? Well, they're about to regret it!
"You're about to see what my physical organ—called a foot—is capable of!"
With that, I leaped out of the water as fast as I could and started chasing them. If only I could freeze time at this exact moment. I don't want this day to end. I don't want to leave Tatko, Mama, Natalia, or Liliya. I want to stay with them forever. If only that were possible!
Want to guess who won? Well, not me! Liliya ended up face-first in the lake, followed by Natalia, thanks to a little help from Tatko. But then he tossed me in right after them!
The conclusion? Tatko always wins, even when he wasn't originally part of the game.
Mama and Tatko joined us in the water after lunch. Natalia and I tried to dunk Tatko, but honestly, it was a lost cause—I'd have better luck wrestling Klaus barehanded.
This family moment reminded me of a time in my past life when I went to the pool with my uncle. My uncle wasn't much for playing in the water; what interested him was diving and swimming laps. I remember being so bored while, next to me, a family of five was splashing, laughing, and dunking each other. I used to watch them with envy and jealousy.
Now, to think that it's me having fun in the water with my family feels incredible. So much so that I could almost forget my fear of losing everything again… But I can't. I must stay vigilant—for Tatko, for Mama, for Natalia, and Liliya. I would do anything to protect them, even at the cost of my own life, if necessary!
Unfortunately for me, my wish to stop time didn't come true, and before long, it was time for us to leave. As a final treat for my tenth birthday, Tatko and Mama decided that Liliya could stay overnight at our house—just this once.
We returned home in high spirits, and everyone quickly went to bed.
Despite having such a wonderful day, my night was the exact opposite. It was riddled with nightmares of Klaus using me as a sacrifice, slaughtering my family and Liliya. I also saw glimpses of Katherine's life—the life that could very well become mine if I'm not careful...
NO! I am not Katherine Pierce! I am Katerina Petrova, formerly known as Erika Smith! I refuse to become what life turned Katherine into! Absolutely not! I'll find a way—it's only a matter of time. Unfortunately, I fear I might be running out of it…
Seven more years before my life turns to ruin. I can make it—I have to. After all, unlike Katherine, I know I have a friend who is truly loyal to me.
