Chapter 21: chapter 21:The Crimson Mist

The daytime breeze stirred the treetops, causing the shadows to dance on the ground covered with dry leaves. The group was gathered in a forest clearing, their faces partially illuminated by the sunlight. The silence was thick, laden with tension and anticipation.

"Sayuri, do you have your poison ready?" Rei asked in a low voice, with a confident smile.

Sayuri nodded serenely, her fingers caressing a small dark glass vial.

"Of course. Ready to take effect in seconds."

Rei glanced at his team. Banji was patiently sharpening his kunai, while Terzhi crossed his arms, impatient.

"Good," Rei continued, lowering his voice even further. "Listen, we'll attack those Karigakure ninjas with a well-executed plan. We can't afford any mistakes."

He took a step forward and looked at Dina, Leila, and Mina.

"You three will handle the distraction. Attack from the flanks, create chaos, but don't expose yourselves too much. We need them to move, to lose their formation."

The three nodded in unison, their eyes shining with determination.

Then, Rei fixed his gaze on Sayuri.

"You, Sayuri, must move silently. Use stealth to infiltrate their ranks. Find their leader and do your thing."

Sayuri smirked, caressing the hilt of her dagger.

"They wouldn't notice my presence even if I breathed down their necks."

Banji stopped sharpening his kunai and twirled it between his fingers.

"And us?"

Rei straightened up, his voice firm.

"Banji, Terzhi, and I will strike head-on. When the distraction begins and Sayuri has done her part, we'll hit them with everything we've got. No mercy."

Terzhi let out a grunt of approval, eager for battle.

"I like the sound of that."

Rei took a deep breath and looked at each of them.

"This is the plan. We won't fail."

A silence heavy with promises hung in the air. Then, with a final glance of complicity, the group dispersed among the trees, slipping away like shadows in the night.

The attack was about to begin.

The silence in the clearing was broken by a faint rustle of leaves as Dina, Leila, and Mina slipped through the trees, stealthy shadows with eyes full of fervor. The kunoichi of Konoha moved with the precision of predators on the prowl, ready to plunge the Karigakure ninjas into chaos.

Sayuri vanished into the underbrush as if the darkness itself claimed her. The cold metal of her poisoned kunai pulsed in her hand like an expectant heart.

Rei, Banji, and Terzhi waited, muscles tense, ready to pounce.

"When hell breaks loose, don't hesitate," Rei growled, his three tomoe spinning like gears of an inevitable fate.

Suddenly, a flash of fire illuminated the forest. Katon: Gōen no Jutsu. A fiery tongue erupted from Mina's mouth, hitting a nearby tree and engulfing the area in flames and thick smoke.

The Karigakure ninjas reacted instantly.

"It's an ambush!" one shouted, drawing his kunai.

But there was no time to form a defense. From the shadows, Leila appeared, her kunai wrapped in a cutting chakra aura. With devastating speed, she spun her weapon in the air and slashed diagonally. A cry of pain tore through the shadows of the day as blood spurted from an open neck.

Dina burst into the fray, channeling chakra into her legs and lunging with terrifying speed. Her fist struck another enemy's chest, slamming him against a tree with a dry crack.

"Damn it! Suiton: Rekkū Suigeki!" roared a Karigakure ninja.

From his palm, a torrent of compressed water shot out like a spear, piercing the ground and sending shards of stone and wood flying.

Mina barely had time to dodge, rolling on the ground as she felt the icy breeze of the attack graze her cheek.

And amidst the chaos, Sayuri was already on the move. She slipped behind a distracted ninja, her poisoned kunai finding its mark with surgical precision at the base of his neck.

A gasp. A tremble in the limbs.

The poison took effect in seconds. The enemy's body convulsed before collapsing, foam bubbling from his mouth.

"One less," Sayuri whispered, disappearing again.

And then, the front erupted.

Banji and Terzhi lunged like hungry wolves. Banji activated his two-tomoe Sharingan, his eyes capturing every enemy movement with absolute clarity. He dodged a kunai with a slight tilt and countered with a Mikazuki no Mai.

A spray of warm blood stained his face.

Terzhi, with his Sharingan, moved with a fierce instinct. He dodged a barrage of Hari Senbon, the thin chakra projectiles passing millimeters from his skin. His counterattack was brutal: a spinning kick that struck his enemy's skull with the force of a hammer.

But the Karigakure ninjas wouldn't fall without a fight.

"Suiton: Kaibatsu Suichū no Jutsu!"

A pillar of water rose from nowhere, trapping Banji in a liquid whirlpool.

His body shook as the water pinned him with inhuman force. His vision blurred. He was going to drown.

"I won't allow it!" Rei roared. He leaped with a beastly jump and, in mid-air, formed seals at breakneck speed.

"Katon: Haisekishō."

He exhaled a dense cloud of burning ash. And ignited it.

The forest burst into flames.

The screams of the Karigakure ninjas echoed through the night as the fire consumed flesh and bone.

The water pillar trapping Banji dissipated in a hiss of steam. Banji fell to his knees, gasping.

Rei landed beside him, his gaze sharp as a katana's edge.

"Get up. We're not done yet."

Banji smiled, blood on his lips.

"Never doubted it."

The flames crackled in the forest, casting dancing shadows over the battlefield. The steam from the evaporated water mixed with the metallic smell of blood. The fallen bodies of the Karigakure ninjas stained the ground red, but those who remained clung to the fight with desperate ferocity.

Rei licked his lips, his Sharingan spinning with intensity.

"There are still several standing," he said, his tone calm, but his eyes were as cold as a katana's edge.

Banji stood up, breathing deeply. His body ached, but adrenaline kept him steady.

"They won't surrender."

Terzhi spat on the ground, muscles tense.

"Neither will we."

From the shadows, an enemy ninja appeared with agile movements, his hands forming seals at breakneck speed.

"Suiton: Suiben."

A whip of water emerged from his palm and lashed out like a liquid serpent. The crack of impact resonated as the current struck the ground with destructive force, lifting rocks and wood splinters.

Dina reacted instantly, sliding under the attack with a swift spin. Her legs tensed, and with a burst of chakra, she launched herself into the air, delivering a descending kick.

The Karigakure ninja tried to dodge, but it was too late.

CRACK!

The impact shattered his collarbone, his body crashing to the ground violently. He coughed blood before Dina's shadow enveloped him again.

"You won't get up again."

Her fist descended like a hammer, sinking into his chest with a wet, brutal sound.

On another part of the field, Sayuri slipped between bodies like a ghost. Her poisoned kunai had already tasted the blood of several enemies, but it wasn't enough yet.

A Karigakure ninja, his face covered in cuts and his uniform soaked in sweat, suddenly turned with a kunai raised.

"I've got you, bitch!"

But when his blade cut through the air, it found no flesh.

Sayuri was no longer there.

A shiver ran down his spine.

The answer came when he felt a cold kiss of steel on his throat.

"No. I've got you."

A clean cut. Blood spurted in a crimson fountain. The ninja fell lifeless.

Leila and Mina were surrounded. Three Karigakure ninjas closed in on them, forming a deadly triangle.

"Surrender," one growled, his eye swollen from a previous blow. "You'll die quickly."

Mina exchanged a glance with Leila and smirked mockingly.

"Quickly? I doubt it."

One of the ninjas formed seals, and his body crackled with energy.

"Raiton: Shiboshi."

A flash of light exploded in the middle of the field. For a moment, everything was enveloped in pure white.

But the attack wasn't fast enough.

Leila was already in motion. She slid under the electric offense and drove her kunai into her opponent's ribcage.

Mina seized her opportunity and channeled chakra into her lungs.

"Katon: Haisekishō."

She exhaled a cloud of flammable ash.

The nearest ninja opened his eyes in horror as the residual spark from his comrade ignited the trap.

BOOM!

The flames enveloped him in an instant. His agonized screams mixed with the crackling of the fire.

Rei, Banji, and Terzhi were face to face with the last two survivors of Karigakure. Both were veterans, their gazes filled with determination and their bodies hardened in battle.

"Many of ours have fallen," one said, his face covered in scars. "But we won't fall without taking some of you with us."

The other nodded and formed seals.

"Suiton: Fang Water Dispersion."

The ground trembled as a series of liquid fangs emerged, projecting with the speed of a rain of spears.

Banji dodged with a spin, but one of the needles grazed him, opening a deep gash on his arm.

Terzhi deflected one of the fangs with his kunai, but the impact pushed him back.

Rei, however, stood firm. His three-tomoe eyes captured every movement, every tiny fluctuation in the enemy's technique.

"You've got guts," he said in a low voice. "But that won't be enough."

He closed his eyes for a moment. And opened them.

The ninja saw the tomoe, and his blood ran cold.

"What...?"

The world around him changed. Suddenly, he was no longer in the forest.

He was alone, surrounded by shadows. And in those shadows, whispers could be heard...

Genjutsu: Kokuangyo no Jutsu.

"Welcome to the darkness."

The ninja tried to move, but his body wouldn't respond. He tried to scream, but his voice was drowned in nothingness.

And then, he felt the blade at his throat.

SHINK.

In the real world, his head fell to the ground, severed from his body.

The last Karigakure ninja saw the scene in horror. He stepped back, breath ragged.

"Damn it..."

He tried to flee.

But Terzhi appeared in front of him in a blink.

"No."

His sword plunged into his chest.

A gush of blood spurted from his mouth as he fell to his knees.

Terzhi's eyes burned with the intensity of battle.

The enemy tried to say something... but only a choked gurgle came out.

With a final push, Terzhi withdrew the blade.

Silence.

The battlefield was littered with corpses.

Rei took a deep breath and looked at his team. They were covered in wounds, exhausted... but alive.

Victory was theirs. Until....
