Chapter 4: Childhood
A year passed.
I continued to stay with merlin-san and shin for a few days and we got quite close. The two of them never asked me to leave, soo I ended up moving in with shin. On the contrary, Merlin-san and Shin treated me like family, and helped me learn magic as well. Eventually, I managed to cast my first spell, and began to research more and more things about it. It led me to lead quite an unhealthy lifestyle though, as I frequently slept less than six hours a day, instead trying to think up new and interesting ways to visualize spells, something which Merlin-san scolded me for quite often.
Both Shin and I were about eight years old. One day, we decided to go on a hunt. Shin soon found a boar, and we began to chase it. A short while later, we cornered it in a part of the forest near the river.
"It's coming your way!" Shin yelled out to me.
"Goott iiitt! yawn" I yelled back, a bit lazily due to not having slept well. I visualized a pure blunt force, formed due to highly pressurised air, something like an pneumatic cannon only stronger, and much more concentrated than what was mechanically possible, and using air as ammunition instead of fuel, before launching it at the boar. This spell was called wind cannon, specialized at causing death of the target without cutting it, or ruining the meat in any other way. It basically caused enough blunt force trauma, that the skull cracks and damages the brain, as well as causing the spinal cord to get damaged, leading to death.
The spell hit the boar straight on its head, causing it to be knocked backwards, before it staggered, trying to get back up, before it eventually rolled over and died.
"That should be enough food for the five of us." shin said, before putting the boar away in his dimensional storage.
"Come to think of it, melida-san and michelle-san are coming over today as well, aren't they?" I asked out loud.
"Mhmm, I bet they're almost here, so let's get back home as well, david." Shin replied.
"*yawn* Alright, let's go. I need to take a nap too." I replied, before we both made out way home.
*******************************************************************
"Welcome home" merlin-san greeted us.
"We're home!" Shin announced, while I just nodded, almost dozing off.
"Hoho, so tell me, what have you two brought today?" he asked.
Instead of replying, Shin just opened his dimensional storage, out of which came the boar we had hunted as well as two wild chickens (which Shin had found and hunted on the way back.)
"Three chickens and a boar, huh. Quite impressive. Seeing as how the boar has no visible wounds, I assume it was your work, david?" Merlin-san asked.
"Yup. WInd cannon works well on big game. It causes the smaller animals' bodies to explode, though." I replied.
"Mhmm, in that case, learn Air slash, or Water blade to cut their heads off cleanly." he recommended.
"Ahh, Grandma Melida and michelle-san are here!" shin called out, causing both of us to look at the front entrance.
I saw two people coming towards us.one of them was a middle aged man, in his late forties, wearing brown pants and a tank top. This was Michelle Colling. A former knight commander as well as Shin's current swordsmanship instructor.
The other was a pink haired woman in her fifties, Melida Bowen. She used to teach us about magical gear and enchantments.
"Speaking of those two, you should learn swordsmanship and how to make magical gear from them as well. Especially you David." Merlin-san began.
"But I don't wanna! Swordsmanship is boring and exhausting. I'd rather spend more time researching magic and enchantments." I cried.
"Now now, what is this about?" Melida-san questioned.
"Grandma Melida! We just returned from a boar hunt!" Shin said with great enthusiasm.
"A BOAR HUNT?! Why on earth would you kids go and do something so dangerous?" Melida-san asked, clearly flabbergasted.
"It's alright, after all we had those magic tools we created together." Shin refuted, trying to calm her down.
"My word. What kind of eight year olds go out to hunt boars?" Melida-san complained.
"These kinds" Shin joked, gesturing first towards me, then himself, causing Melida-san to smack him on the head.
"Still, to be able to take down a boar at your age, I think youre ready for the next level of my training. Say David, how about you join us as well?" Michelle-san commented.
"Ehh, don't do that!" Shin complained, while I gave his offer some light consideration. But a moment later, i replied "i would, but i still would much rather just master magic. I want to be able to give magic all my attention and swordsmanship training takes a lot of time, which I don't have." I repeated my usual excuse.
"No worries, but just so you know, the earlier you start training, the better. After a certain age, you won't be able to learn properly, no matter how talented you are." Michelle-san warned.
"I'll keep that in mind." I responded.
"Alright, as long as you understand. Now as for you shin, get ready, we'll be training all afternoon." Michelle-san said, changing the topic.
This caused Shin to groan, before telling me "Heyy, you should join me too. I get lonely during my swordsmanship classes because you're not there."
"Nope. I'm not holding a sword for as long as I breathe, much less train in it. But don't worry, I'll be sure to cheer you on… after my nap that is." I answered bluntly.
"Alright now, enough complaining. Shin, go with Michelle for your classes. And david! Merlin tells me you've been neglecting your sleep again!" Melida-san yelled, a dangerous glint in her eyes, causing a shiver to go down my spine.
'Shit! Im fucked. I'm so going to be chewed out until the evening. Well… I guess there goes my nap. Curse you, Merlin-san.' I complained internally, preparing myself for the inevitable.
