Chapter 362: Who comes to us with gunpowder, dies from explosions
Before the humans could shoot at them, the Warrior Bees shot first. Another rain of tiny "stars" fell toward the gunpowder, and the bees immediately flew higher away from the imminent explosion.
I tensed, too—then had to furiously beat my wings as a sudden gust of wind tried to throw me to the side.
And the same wind pushed all the falling bolts off-course, blowing out the fires and making the bolts hopelessly miss their targets!
"Damned wind!"
If the wind had a face to glower at, I would've been doing just that. The bad luck was chasing me!
The crossbow-bees, of course, wouldn't give up just because they failed a second time. They were already rearming their bows—but from below, humans were aiming their weapons at them, too!
With a loud bang, a musketeer fired in our direction, missing anyone by a hundred meters. But this was just the start.
Although hitting a bee even from this (relatively small for humans) distance was very hard for their crude weapons, even a shitty rifle hits its targets twice a year!
Now the crossbow-bees hesitated, unsure if they should keep firing or retreat.
'Keep shooting, girls! I will cover you!' I messaged the Chief Warrior of the crossbow-bees and raised my tail.
Before anyone else could pull the trigger, I shot my stinger at a musketeer. Although the distance was massive, humans were equally massive targets, and the musketeer conveniently raised his head, making his face easy to hit even from above.
〔You deal 54 damage. The target is poisoned!〕
My stinger hit him on the nose. He screamed and fell, continuously losing health. And by the time my stinger regrew, I was already aiming at another shooter.
"Stinger-machine gun, go, go, go!" I shouted, shooting a stinger after a stinger. "Fucking die you all, you shouldn't have come to this place!"
The enemies could only cover and flee or fall and die! The few panicked shots that someone did went even farther away from us than the first one.
Nobody could oppose them as the Warrior Bees shot their third volley. This time, everything went smoothly.
The burning bolts hit the gunpowder sacks, setting their thick fabric on fire. Perhaps some spilled gunpowder was also caught in fire, too, because then…
KABOOM!
The first explosion shook the earth and the air, throwing me with my bodyguards and escaping Warrior Bees up with the blastwave. It threw aside the nearest cannon and several humans that stood too close.
But after it, a dozen other blasts followed!
It was a deafening chain of explosions, fire, and smoke! The combined force of these explosions was even larger than I expected. For a moment, I felt like a leaf caught in a wind—this was how far the blastwaves threw me, even from this distance!
"Father!" Destroyer shouted, grabbing my arm in an attempt to stabilize me or to not be thrown away.
Below, the Warrior Bees were shouting much more desperately. The blast waves hurt them badly enough to deal damage to health points.
A few screamed and began falling down, unable to unfold their broken wings, and not everybody was caught by their sisters in time. Others lost their weapons or looked around in a daze, as if they suffered a contusion.
But this was absolutely *nothing* compared to what was happening to the Vardish army.
The chain of explosions went through an entire row of cannons, catching in itself hundreds, no—thousands of people that were retreating toward it from the crusading bees led by Bloodimina.
I caught myself in the air and looked below, wide-eyed.
The smoke rising from the site of the explosions hid the worst part of this picture, but everywhere I looked there was blood, soot, and bodies lying around, often in parts. The survivors could only lie around and groan in pain or try to crawl or run away, depending on how wounded they were.
It was a scene of destruction that made something vicious and primal in me sigh in awe. The male instinct that was drawn toward tanks and other war machinery just saw a piece of heaven.
"Yes!" I shouted, raising my fists in the air. "We did it, my girls! YEEEEESSS!"
And although they were all wounded, and some of them even died, the crossbow-bees all cheered and smiled with genuine joy as they gathered near me.
My girls understood! They also had this instinct in them!
"This is the best thing I ever did in my life, Father! All of us!" Chief Warrior did, flying next to me. One of her arms was bent the wrong way and her face had some soot on it, but her smile was brilliant. "So many of them died from their own explosives… Please, lead us on! Anywhere! To kill!"
I raised my hand, wordlessly telling the Chief to wait a moment and messaged Bloodimina.
'Report, Bloodimina! How are your forces?'
'A few hundred bees were caught in explosions, but the casualties are few. But this broke what remained of the human spirit. They are retreating fully!'
'Good. Bring down whoever you can, but don't chase the rest. This was a glorious victory, but there will be many more of them in the future!'
'Yes, Father!'
After this, I turned to the crossbow-bees.
"Enough fighting for today. All of you, retreat to the back lines and see Physicians. You just won this fight, you deserve rest."
"Yes, Father!" Chief Warrior saluted with only a hint of disappointment and went to organize her people.
Meanwhile, I looked below, then at the distant hill with the Naregan army, and chuckled.
General Gresch was about to come only for the clean-up and be disappointed—until he heard about my next plans. Since the Vardish Empire had started it, it was going to be the next target for our conquest.
'Since all these people are here, they can help us turn all these dead human bodies into resources. After today, the Naregan army will have much more musketeers than before.'
