Chapter 12: Stumble Upon Disaster

A humanoid monster with green skin, wearing filthy cloth to cover its crotch and raising its club high, approached Yuto.

The monster smirked, revealing its jagged teeth with drool dripping like poisonous nectar. Not just one, but two of them came together, seeing the petrified Yuto.

However, they were gravely mistaken if they thought Yuto was frozen in fear.

He sidestepped, dodging the goblin's swing. The wind whistled with the horrid cackle of the goblin whose attack missed, immediately chasing its meal.

His mouth curved upwards, knowing that an E-Rank monster couldn't harm Yuto even without him expelling a single drop of Qi from his body.

'I think it's enough for a test.'

Yuto stepped back, thrusting his sword straight into the chest of the goblin before him. The flame of life vanished in its yellow eyes, which reflected Yuto's expression.

"Gyaak!"

The other monster roared, seeing its comrade die. Yuto's face tensed, feeling a cold breath slice through the air. His hand blurred, breaking an arrow that fell near his feet.

'Archer!?'

He swung his sword sideways, beheading the other goblin as his eyes fixed on the direction of the flying arrow.

A small gleam caught his eye. Yuto raised his sword, which rang 'clink', accurately deflecting the arrow.

"There you are."

His body darted forward, using the surrounding trees as camouflage.

Yuto circled the perimeter until he saw two goblins: one wielding a bow and the other a small dagger.

His lips curled up. In an instant, he had approached both goblins, who were stunned to see him so close.

"Die!"

With a single slash, Yuto cut half of their bodies, staining the surrounding trees with blue blood.

"Conquest complete. But…"

His eyes fell upon the corpses before him. The proof for this quest was the right ear of a goblin.

However, Yuto's thinking was so shallow that he forgot something important: bringing equipment to store the materials.

He clicked his tongue, his face turned slightly red, as he was angry at himself.

"What now?"

Thinking quickly, he looked at the simple clothes given by Gonzo. Luckily, his clothes were a bit too big for him.

Using his sword to make a small cut in the fabric covering his groin, Yuto tore it off and wrapped the goblin's ear, which he had cut from the corpse.

He returned to the previous spot to harvest other ears as proof of his conquest.

"Good, let's continue the exploration."

Talking to himself, the boy held the materials in his left hand and the sword in his right.

He walked through the lush trees like a maze. Yuto's eyes tirelessly scanned his surroundings—a silent, eerie forest, illuminated by sunlight piercing through the dense canopy above.

But the deeper he went, the stronger the chilling cold that seeped to his bones.

His ears twitched, hearing rustling sounds from afar, but when he looked at the source, there was no presence lurking.

He swallowed hard. Yuto moved forward towards the source of the sound. His cold fingers gripped the sword hilt tightly.

'Was that just my imagination?'

Right after he uttered that, a scream instantly broke his thoughts. The sound came from straight ahead of him.

Yuto stopped midway.

That scream didn't come from a monster or an animal; it was human. Yuto stood still, letting the cold wind caress his skin with a chilling chuckle.

Roaaar!

The ground beneath him trembled, hearing the roar of a wild beast, sending a shockwave of despair that made Yuto's body tremble violently.

'...What is this?'

This was the first time fear surged in his heart.

Yuto, who had never flinched even in the face of bullies, felt a stifling aura slowly strangling his neck.

He clutched his chest, finding it pounding rapidly. Taking a deep breath, Yuto channelled Qi throughout his body.

Intending to turn back, but his legs betrayed his thoughts.

With light feet, he crept forward, careful not to make a sound.

His power quickly adapted to the user's will, and Qi flowed to his head, letting the blue colour in his eyes glow.

His gaze shifted, tens, hundreds of meters from his position, until Yuto finally saw the open field.

'Adventurers?'

There were five of them: three men and two women, each wearing good armour, weapons crafted from top-tier materials, and neat, luxurious clothing.

'They must be experienced adventurers, hm!?'

His eyes widened as he saw one of their members lying bathed in blood. Her chest slowly heaved, on the brink of death.

'That scream must have been from her.'

She wore a luxurious gown, along with a white robe adorned with a gold pattern. Yuto could guess the role of the dying woman.

A Healer was a very valuable asset in a party. Because without her, the vanguard would lose their support, both physically and morally.

"Everyone, follow me!"

Yuto's gaze shifted, seeing a large man in silver armour carrying a huge shield standing before a four-legged black monster.

He gasped as cold sweat began to pour down his back, making him shiver in fright.

'S-Rank monster, Phantom Jaguar!'

The dark-furred monster, reminiscent of a starless night sky, vanished from Yuto's sight. No, it disappeared from the world itself.

"Aaakh!"

Yuto turned away, seeing a headless body drenched in its own blood fall, and the horror had just begun.

A chain of gut-wrenching screams entangled Yuto's consciousness, causing him to drown in silence.

His vision was filled with blood, the crisp sound of crushing bones echoing, wrapped in the terrified expressions of the adventurers.

It sent a chill writhing down his spine.

In an instant, the party was annihilated. But Yuto still saw no sign of the monster's presence.

'…I must leave this place, quick!'

Yuto held his breath, fearing that his exhale might attract the monster's attention. He turned, wary, looking downwards.

'Slowly but surely…'

Choosing his footing carefully, he moved away from his vantage point.

But it was too late for him when a large shadow loomed over the tree.

A rustling leaf made his body flinch. He raised his face upwards, seeing a large cat-like figure perched on a thick tree branch.

"Grrrr!"

'Damn it.'

Yuto cursed in his heart, his heartbeat echoing in his ears like war drums.

Yellow, predatory eyes locked onto him, turning him into a statue.

The monster stood, its four legs clad in thick black fur with strong muscles that could finish its prey in the shadows.

From Elias's memories, Yuto realized that the closer a monster was to S-Rank or Disaster-Rank, the more it resembled its origin.

But none of that mattered to Yuto's current situation. He racked his brain, trying to find a way to deceive the monster before him.

But the result was zero.

'What now?'

The sky seemed to be on Yuto's side when a golden light cascaded toward his silver sword.

A glimmer of hope appeared, and Yuto flicked his wrist to direct the light's reflection from his sword, successfully catching the big cat's attention, albeit temporarily.

'Kuh, it's now or never!'

Qi energy exploded in his Dantian, and his body was flooded with raw power, making the joints clatter while flesh tore from being burdened.

Yuto gritted his teeth, kicking the ground to get away from the monster, but he underestimated the cat's reflexes.

Landing behind him, with a single swipe, Yuto received a heavy blow to his right side and was sent flying.

Unfortunately, there were no trees to impede his trajectory, so he was tossed through the air until he reached near a ravine with the sound of rushing water.

Bam!

Yuto coughed up fresh blood after hitting a tall tree, feeling his entire body scream in pain.

The jaguar approaches from the shadows.

His eyes narrowed as he gritted his teeth and rose, seeing his sword shattered from blocking the cat's attack.

"Rawr!"

Closing his eyes, letting adrenaline fill every fibre in his being. His mouth curved upwards, grinning ferociously.

"Goodbye, you damned cat."

He leapt to the side, using a nearby tree as a foothold to propel himself towards the deep ravine.

The jaguar wanted to give chase, but Yuto moved one step ahead, using the remnants of his sword to reflect light into its yellow eyes, blinding it momentarily.

Yuto's body felt light as gravity pulled him down. Intense pain began to gnaw at his consciousness, swallowing his mind into darkness.
