Re:Interdimensional Mercenary [IF]

Chapter 5: Chapter 4

(Happy Chinese New Year)

As Kevin and his five-member special forces team ventured deeper into the structure, the sudden sound of loud gunfire and the screeches of dying Honkai Beasts echoed through the corridors.

The team exchanged quick glances, nodding in silent agreement before picking up their pace. The drone trailing behind them adjusted its speed to keep up, its sensors capturing every detail of the tense atmosphere.

Meanwhile, with Adam and Alice down at the engine room.

Angeline manipulated the controls, causing the engine room's blast door to open just wide enough for a person to pass through, creating a sturdy choke point. The reinforced door, built to withstand extreme impacts, would serve as their line of defense.

Through the narrow gap, Adam spotted a significant breach on the far wall of the engine room, opposite their position. The room itself was saturated with pink energy, the air thick with its malevolent presence. In the center of it all, a small rift hovered, radiating ominous energy.

Angeline materialized beside Adam and pointed at the rift. "That's the source of the Honkai Energy," she explained. "From what I've gathered after briefly connecting to this planet's wireless network and accessing the major organizations' databases, it appeared spontaneously—like a natural disaster. It likely emerged when a breach occurred in the forcefield during the Emperor-Class Honkai Beast's attack. The rift is theorized to possess a will of its own, bent on eliminating humanity and advancing destructive technology, though this hasn't been conclusively proven by researchers." She casually revealed her hacking into Fire Moth's classified database as though she were talking about the weather.

Adam peered into the engine room, then turned back to Angeline before glancing at Alice, who stood on the opposite side of the door, eager for battle. "How do I shut the rift?" He asked.

Angeline's gaze shifted toward the Honkai Beasts before responding. "We have two options: either we kill the Honkai Beasts until the surrounding energy is depleted, or we destroy the rift itself, which is emitting the Honkai Energy." She paused, watching as a mischievous glint crossed Adam's face—a sure sign he'd come up with a plan.

"Hey, Angeline," Adam said, a sly smile spreading across his face.

"Yes, Master?" Angeline replied, tilting her head in confusion.

"If the power core is as you described, doesn't that mean the sun inside it is nearing the end of its cycle and on the verge of collapsing into a supernova?"

Angeline's expression froze as she immediately realized the implications of Adam's idea. Her wariness quickly turned to exasperation, but she composed herself, feigning a cough to mask her unease.

"Master, I strongly object to this plan," she said sternly. "If the rift doesn't close immediately, the resulting explosion could damage the engine room—and you might be caught in the crossfire."

"Then what's your alternative?" Adam countered, fixing her with a questioning stare.

Angeline hesitated, taking a moment to calculate possible solutions. Drawing from the Fire Moth's proven methods, she considered two options: a controlled nuclear explosion to destroy the rift or the use of a newly developed device by the First Institute designed to destabilize and shut down spatial rifts safely.

Neither option was feasible given their current circumstances, and Angeline's furrowed brow confirmed as much.

Seeing her reaction, Adam smirked knowingly. Angeline let out a defeated sigh, reluctantly conceding to his reckless plan. As dangerous and suicidal as it was, it was still better than wasting precious time trying to exhaust the rift's energy—especially with the Emperor-Class Honkai Beast still looming as a threat, momentarily distracted by the Fire Moth troops on the surface of the Pacific sea.

"Alright," Adam said decisively. "Let's thin out these monsters first."

Alice nodded and prepared herself for the battle ahead. Adam's plan was clear: they would use the destabilized power core—containing a sun on the verge of a supernova—to destroy the rift.

Moments later, Adam and Alice peeked through the slightly opened door.

Without hesitating, they unleashed a hail of fire into the engine room, targeting the horde of Honkai Beasts blocking their path.

Before Adam could stop her, Alice charged forward like a battle-hungry berserker, her crimson eyes glowing ominously as they locked onto the enemies. With a feral intensity, she darted into the fray, her mechanical body moving with fluid precision. She performed effortless acrobatic maneuvers, weaving, sliding, and climbing over the massive Chariots with the ease of a predator among prey.

Adam provided cover from the doorway, his sniper rifle picking off the larger Chariots with precise, well-placed headshots. Meanwhile, Alice's Sub-Light assault rifle roared, its rounds

tearing through the fragile Archangel swarms with deadly

efficiency. Each shot was

overkill, the kinetic force of her

bullets shattering the

Archangels' thinner silicon

carapace, even when her aim

wasn't perfect.

While Archangels only needed a single shot to bring them down, the sturdier Chariots required far more effort. Alice's

weapon would take nearly a dozen rounds to break through

their thick armor, but Adam's Hornet sniper rifle, loaded with specialized tungsten-core armor-piercing rounds, tore

through them with ease. On

average, two to three shots

were enough to bring a Chariot crashing down.

This division of labor-Alice

dismantling the swarming

Archangels while Adam

focused on the towering

Chariots-was an efficient and

logical strategy, ensuring the duo maintained control over the chaotic battlefield. Together, they carved through the horde, steadily advancing toward their ultimate objective.

In the midst of the battle, Adam, positioned behind the blast door of the engine room, suddenly received a warning from Angeline about the presence of intruders.

Kevin, advancing with an experimental prototype weapon powered by Honkai Energy, halted abruptly. His instincts kicked in as he raised his greatsword to his head, just in time to block a powerful projectile. The impact left a visible dent on the weapon.

Without hesitation, Adam, standing by the blast door, fired the shot. He didn't waste time on words or diplomacy. The moment Angeline informed him of the group's actions—dismantling devices, disabling mechs, and stealing firearms—he branded them as enemies.

To Adam, these people were nothing more than thieves trespassing in his home. Angeline's grim warning only solidified his stance: if captured by the organization behind these intruders, he would be dissected and studied as an ancient human predating modern civilization and possibly as an alien entity.

Even if he overlooked that grim fate, the existence of his Orbital Fortress—a weapon capable of world destruction—would make him a target for Fire Moth's councilors, politicians, and global powers eager to exploit its technologies.

Thus, Adam could not afford kindness to those who coveted him and his possessions.

Kevin, oblivious to Adam's grim rationale, raised his hands in surrender. "We mean no harm! We come in peace and wish for a peaceful meeting!" he declared, trying to reason with Adam.

Before Adam could respond or order them to leave, Alice's urgent call for help diverted his attention. Inside the engine room, she was surrounded by four Chariots.

"Damnit!" Adam cursed, activating a skill that made his body glow with a yellow hue. In a fluid motion, he shot down the Chariots encircling Alice.

Kevin, witnessing the chaos from outside, offered to assist Adam under Mei's directive. However, Adam ignored the offer.

Instead, Angeline hacked into the drone network and accessed the intruders' communication channel, directly addressing Mei aboard the aircraft carrier. Mei was visibly stunned.

Angeline's voice was cold and resolute. "Begone from our home while we are still lenient, thieves. Otherwise, don't blame us if we sink your ship along with the Emperor-Class Honkai Beast into the depths of the sea."

After studying the Orbital Fortress, Mei had no doubt they could deliver on the threat. However, for humanity's survival, she couldn't let such advanced technology remain out of Fire Moth's hands. Seizing it was crucial to increasing their chances against the Honkai.

As Mei grappled with indecision, Adam ignored her forces and sprinted back into the engine room, now partially cleared of Honkai Beasts. His gaze fixed on the rift inside, he hurled a destabilized power core into the anomaly. Wasting no time, he aimed his shoulder-mounted railgun and fired.

The power core's surface cracked, releasing intense heat waves and blinding light.

"Master!" Alice shouted as she rushed toward the blast door, evacuating. Despite the imminent danger, she turned back to pull Adam along just before the door sealed shut.

Angeline immediately redirected the external forcefield, containing the explosion within the engine room. A dull tremor rocked the entire structure, the shockwave rippling all the way to the ocean's surface. Mei, monitoring the situation through the drone's live feed, watched in panic as chaos erupted among her technicians and scientists.

"What just happened?" Mei demanded urgently.

A frantic technician shouted, "A spatial quake just occurred! The gravitational field is in total chaos! And these energy readings… they're the residual impact of a supernova!"

"What?!" Mei's voice quivered with shock, unable to grasp the magnitude of what had just transpired.

"Master. The rift had been shut down completely although, unfortunately. The engine had sustained critical damage in the process. However, with the 3D printer factory fully functional. The damages will be fully repaired in approximately two hours." Angeline provided the post battle report.

"Mhn. Focus on repairing the engine for now." Adam nodded before asking for the location of the remaining Honkai Beast which Angeline highlights on his minimap for convenience.

After obtaining the locations, Adam and Alice are about to depart when Kevin and his team suddenly show signs of aggression and block their path.

The drone which Mei communicated through suddenly talked.

"Call us a thief or whatever you wish. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to let you go. Not when the survival of humanity depends on our success." Mei said, which gave Kevin and his team the cue to get physical instead of continuing their attempts of diplomacy.

Mei at first wary of Adam and Alice who possessed powerful weapons capable of defeating Honkai Beast with ease and Angeline who could easily hack into their systems. However, with only two of them, Mei took a gamble and hoped that a dozen of Fire Moth's best operators would be sufficient to subdue and capture both Adam and Alice.

But before Adam could react with hostility, something suddenly popped up in his vision. No. Rather, in his mind. Since he could see it even when blinking.

Because of the brain implants that connect his brain with the ACE Suit, Angeline also caught a glimpse of the numerous pop-ups in his mind. But oddly enough, she seemed very calm as if she was used to them. But Adam, to his surprise, didn't notice the abnormalities with Angeline.

"Master, unfortunately it seems we have to cease our hostility towards this group of humans." She said while focusing quite sharply at Kevin at the lead before she gave her suggestion. "The best option available is to evict them from the Orbital Fortress and buy time for the engine room to be repaired for an immediate take off from this planet's surface." She said and waited for his decision.

After a moment, Adam relent and lower his rifle which is mimicked by Alice which puts Kevin and his team into relief thinking Adam is willing to cooperate. But what happened next put them into a panic.

"Do it." Adam said as Kevin and his team along with the two submersibles suddenly engulfed with blue light before they found themselves suddenly teleported to the surface of the Pacific Ocean.
