Chapter 25: Back to Reality… Son of a ...

Myrddin Space Transit Hub and Reality Jump Station :multiversal star date: ~irrelevant~

Time has no meaning in the nexus between worlds

...

The portal flared open and then widened with a hiss.

Josh stepped through first, boots hitting sleek black tile that shimmered faintly with refracted starlight. Behind him came Bo, Kensi, Vik, and Misty; each one hauling tech, weapons, crates of stolen data shards, and more gear than a black ops strike team had any business carrying.

The lighting above shifted to soft gold as the portal remained open behind them. Then the system voice echoed overhead in a tone that could only be described as professionally disappointed.

"Any additional cargo should be placed into the transport to the left of the portal entrance, world side. The station can handle moving and sorting it itself. Please place any current unsorted gear on the table ahead and the station shall make sure it gets where it's going. Amateurs."

~

Josh glanced down at the crate in his hands, then at the literal hovercycle Bo had wheeled in sideways.

He raised an eyebrow. "Whose station is this again?"

The ceiling lights dimmed slightly in response. Rude.

He gave Bo and Kensi a nod. "Alright, you two. Portal's still open on the other side. Take anything you can't live without and chuck it through. Station'll route it to the vaults, armory, garage, hangars, whatever fits."

Bo gave a crisp nod and turned back through, dragging two gear cases and muttering something about "rude AI architecture". Kensi followed Josh with a suspiciously cheerful whistle and an armful of prototype gadgets she probably wasn't supposed to keep.

It took less than a minute before the room shimmered again.

A curved archway near the far end of the hall unfolded like origami, revealing a view of a clean-tiled transit hub, now emptied of gear. The rest had been swept up and slotted into storage faster than anyone could blink.

"Logistics complete. Equipment assimilated. Welcome to Myrddin Space Transit Hub and Reality Jump Station. My name is Kira. No, it's not short for anything, Merlin just thought it sounded nice."

The room shifted.

Not violently, but rather in the way that dreams did. Clean, impossible geometry rotated just slightly out of phase. Gold filigree lights formed archways into other halls. On one wall, a circular vault door hissed open and revealed a single word engraved in silver: Library.

Misty stepped forward slowly. Her eyes widened as she took it all in.

"This feels… real."

Vik let out a low whistle. "And expensive."

Josh grinned. "Only the best, boys and girls. Kira, status update?"

"Emergency Quest: Two very Lost Girl.s : Complete."

You kept the city from eating your new friends alive and dragged them into your personal RPG.

Bonus points awarded for flair. If the little jumpy one pees on the floor she is sleeping outside."

Kensi, "Hey, I take personal offense at that."

"Good. I take personal offense to small creatures peeing on my floor."

Josh, "Please ignore it. I think it has been watching videos of Gladys from Portal."

Kensi, "Portal;?"

"Don't worry. I promise the cake is not a lie. You can trust me."

Bo having reentered from the portal just in time to catch all of that.

"Oh. He got flair points. Cool. Where's my reward?"

Josh just grinned wider.

The system wasn't done.

"New save point created: Jump Station: Core File 4. Please remember to do this on your own next time."

"Stable link to Earth (Cyberpunk 2077) confirmed. You may reenter this world at any point in time. Do with that what you will..."

Josh blinked at that, one brow quirking.

He didn't say anything out loud, but the implications hung in the air.

He could go back. Not just to visit, but to fix things. Johnny. Jackie. Bartmoss. Others...

Then the lights shifted again.

From the far end of the atrium, where a row of curved recliners faced a projection screen floating in midair, came the sound of popcorn crunching.

"'Bout time," said R.O.B. 37, lounging in a recliner shaped like a racing bucket seat with an embroidered golden 37. "You sure took the scenic route. I give you a 9 for style, an 11 for effect, but only a 4 on utilizing your abilities."

Merlin sat beside him, robes draped over the seat like he'd conjured the whole thing from a Renaissance fair. He didn't say anything at first, just raised a brow and looked Josh over like a proud, mildly exasperated teacher.

Josh just shrugged. "I made a decision, and then made it work."

R.O.B. pointed a pretzel stick at him like it was a scepter.

"You did fine. I guess. Though next time, consider using magic first instead of halfway through the act three climax. You know, since you have magic and your system now."

Josh's eyes narrowed. "I was easing into it."

"You were monowiring mechs while holding back a wand that could rewrite their operating systems," R.O.B. replied. "Your restraint is adorable."

Merlin finally spoke, voice warm but heavy with history.

"You walked into a dying city and left it echoing with life again. I am… proud."

Josh tilted his head. "You're not mad about how I handled things?"

"I'm not mad," Merlin said. "I'm just relieved you didn't accidentally or intentionally rewrite the world into a musical."

"No promises going forward."

R.O.B. cleared his throat.

"Let's talk about the girls."

Josh tensed.

"They're good," R.O.B. continued. "Like scarily good. Your world may have forgotten how to handle that level of drive. And they, technically, don't have a world anymore."

Kensi looked up. "Wait. What?"

"Your story ended," R.O.B. said, a little softer. "The universe didn't collapse, it just reached the last page of your arc. But the world itself moves on. It left the two of you a parting gift, though."

He snapped his fingers.

Both Bo and Kensi paused. A quiet shimmer passed over them. Like a resonance aligning with something older than the stars.

"You've been accepted as official players in The Game. Under Josh's banner. With the full protection that entails."

Josh turned slowly. "Wait, I didn't-"

R.O.B. waved him off. "You did when you pulled them out. You made them part of your team. So. Now they're with you."

He smirked. "As a bonus, you're getting compatibility upgrades. Bo's a High Fae now, and when entering your world she'll be a High Human just like you. Kensi's registered as High Human as well. Full magical cores for both, the works. Your world gave you every chance it could."

Bo's eyes widened. "High Fae?"

Kensi blinked. "High what now?"

"You'll feel it later," R.O.B. said.

Merlin smiled. "And you'll learn it properly. In time."

Josh turned toward him. "You're gonna train them?"

"Oh yes," Merlin said, his eyes glinting. "They're far too interesting to leave unsupervised."

Josh sighed. "Just don't turn them into chaos mages."

R.O.B. smirked. "No promises."

~

Josh handed them each a silver-edged shard, thin as a credit card and pulsing with soft light.

"Everything I've learned that isn't bloodline locked. Theory. Practice. History. Safety protocols. Use them with your cyberdecks in the chamber behind you. It's tuned to time acceleration. You won't be conscious of time passing, but when you come out, you'll come out fully trained."

Bo took hers without a word, fingers tight on the edge. Kensi stared at hers like it might sprout wings.

"Good luck," Josh said. "You'll do fine."

R.O.B. gave Josh a long look.

"Your new save file's active. Core File 4 logged."

"Thanks."

"remember to do it yourself next time."

"One last thing," R.O.B. added with a smirk. "They'll need to de-age to match your timeline."

Josh paused.

Bo and Kensi looked at him. "De-age?"

He smiled awkwardly. "Did I… forget to mention that part?"

Merlin raised a hand. "It is necessary."

Kensi groaned. "Are we going to have to deal with puberty again?"

"Don't worry," R.O.B. sent privately to Josh, grinning like a deviant. ~This is de way, my brudah.~

Josh facepalmed.

R.O.B. clapped once. The return portal shimmered open again.

He looked back once more. Not to say goodbye. Just to make sure they were still there.

Then he stepped through...

And vanished.

Sunday, May 5, 1991 - 10:20 p.m.

-Myrddin Manor Third Floor

A low magical hum filled the third-floor reading nook of Myrddin Manor.

Cool stone underfoot. Moonlight spilling across cushions. The faint shimmer of warded glass humming with leyline resonance. The world smelled the same, clean, old, and humming with quiet power.

Josh stood still for a breath, then stepped forward.

The coffee mug was exactly where he'd left it, nestled on the low table beside an empty square of space where a certain rune book used to sit.

He blinked.

"Huh."

The System chimed in with dry amusement:

Temporal Deceleration Protocol: Active.

"Your coffee is more consistent than your life choices."

He picked up the mug and sipped. Still hot. Still brutal. Still probably banned in four magical jurisdictions.

"Yep. Definitely home."

He looked once at the empty space beside the mug, then smirked. "Guess I did take it with me."

Then, with a half-roll of his eyes and a quiet breath, he pulled up his character sheet.

"Let's see what the multiverse decided to leave behind."
