Chapter 4: System Activated
Like empty canvases where dreams came to die, hospital ceilings were all the same: white, sterile, and hollow. Uncertain at first whether he was alive or trapped in some perverse afterlife, Arjun Rajput opened his eyes to one such ceiling.
He was grounded in reality by pain.
His left eye was swollen shut, his lip was split, and his ribs throbbed. Each breath was a burning sensation. The world's harsh reminder that he was now totally alone was the silence, which hurt more than the physical discomfort.
Until he looked back and saw her.
By his bedside, the beach woman was peeling an orange with care. Her hair was in a loose braid, her skin was sun-kissed, and her eyes, gentle but reserved, met his with serene awareness.
She offered a slice and said softly, "Oh, you're awake." "Well done."
Arjun winced as he tried to speak.
A man with a thermos and a steel tiffin carrier came into the room. He wore glasses, was tall and stocky, and had the mild sternness of a man who knew how to govern a household with authority and affection.
"Beta, you're safe now," he said. "My name is Ramesh Bhai. This is Vaidehi, my wife. On the beach close to Versova, we discovered you.
Vaidehi continued, "We told them you were our nephew, but the hospital wanted a police report." The bills will be handled by us. Right now, don't worry about anything.
When Arjun finally spoke, his voice broke. "Why... why did you assist me?"
Vaidehi gave a soft smile. "Because somebody had to."
They took care of Arjun for the next few days. They gave him clean clothes, helped him walk again, and brought homemade khichdi. In Andheri East, Ramesh operated a small electronics repair business. Vaidehi was a homemaker who had a gift for kindness and a mother's sharp tongue that wouldn't put up with bullshit.
He wasn't questioned very often. Not initially.
However, Ramesh finally questioned, "Who did this to you?" on the fourth day while Arjun was sitting and drinking warm dal from a steel bowl.
Arjun inhaled deeply. "My life was ruined by a man posing as family. Then whatever pride I still had was stolen by another man posing as a celebrity.
He hesitated.
"My name was Arjun Rajput. Jaipur's royal heir. Four thousand crores is their net worth. And I'm nothing now.
Ramesh remained motionless.
"All right," he said.
Arjun looked up, perplexed.
"Everything is gone from you. No more delusions, then. Masks are out. Now you're just you. A man truly begins to live at that point.
Vaidehi gave Arjun a pat on the arm. And you can rise again without being a member of the royal family. It's Mumbai. Here, dreams perish. However, they are also reborn.
Arjun demanded to leave the hospital by the second week. Above Ramesh's store, the couple offered their spare room in their small one-bedroom apartment. Despite its modest size, it was spotless and brimming with warmth, qualities the palace never possessed.
He read borrowed books and recuperated during the day. To keep himself occupied at night, he assisted Ramesh in fixing TVs and phones.
However, the void persisted.
Now his name had no meaning.
Dust was his dream.
Furthermore, his name was unknown to the industry that broke him.
Until one evening, while enjoying a cup of chai while sitting by the small window, Arjun's thoughts wandered.
What if I turned my story into a movie? Not with cameras. Not with actors. Just something actual.
He picked up a notebook and began to write.
He had no idea why.
He was unable to stop.
He returned to the movie set a week later, this time to return the ID card they had thrown at him, not to work. He didn't anticipate appreciation.
However, he received worse.
Behind his back, he whispers. Laughter. He was referred to as "Thiefraaj." "Maharaj, want chai or cash?" a young actor bowed in jest.
Arjun left without saying anything.
He sat on the rooftop that evening and gazed at the skyline of Mumbai.
There was no camera on him. No crew. No relationships.
However, a part of him resisted death.
At midnight, as the city began to quiet, something unexpected happened.
His heard a voice DING
