Chapter 20: 20. The wolf beneath
The private elevator dinged open on the top floor.
Lucia stepped in first, Will behind her. He hadn't let go of her hand until they reached the entrance.
Lucia could hear the employees whispering.
She was bringing another man to the office after Kaiden had just lashed out.
They were wondering what his reaction would be.
Lucia looked at Will who was with her, he lingered awkwardly, concern still dark in his eyes.
"I'll be fine," she said softly.
Will nodded. "If anything happens… just call me."
Lucia turned away quickly before the emotion on her face could betray her.
But when she stepped into the executive hallway, she froze.
Kaiden was there. Standing by the glass wall, his back to her, talking with one of his assistants.
Until he turned.
And saw her.
And saw Will.
His expression changed in an instant.
Gone was the composed CEO.
Gone was the protective partner from this morning.
What looked back at her now was fury wrapped in flesh.
His eyes a shade darker, more golden than brown locked on her. Then to Will. Then back again.
Lucia's stomach dropped.
"Lucia." His voice echoed through the hall. Flat. Controlled. Deadly.
Will instinctively stepped closer. "Look, man, it's not"
Kaiden didn't even blink. "Step away from her."
Will squared his shoulders. "She was attacked. I helped her. That's all."
Kaiden's gaze never wavered. "You touched her."
"Because she needed help."
"And now she doesn't." Kaiden's voice dipped lower. "Now back. Off."
Lucia stepped forward. "Kaiden, it's fine"
He didn't let her finish.
"Office. Now."
The command in his tone sent a shiver down her spine. And something else... awakened.
She didn't argue. Couldn't.
She just followed him as he turned sharply and stormed into his office, the door slamming shut behind them.
---
Kaiden didn't speak for a few long seconds.
His back was to her again.
Hands clenched into fists at his sides.
The room buzzed with his energy dark, charged, like a storm threatening to break.
Lucia stood by the door, tense. "I was only out for a break."
"With him?" Kaiden's voice was barely human.
"He was just there! I didn't plan it."she stated
Kaiden turned slowly.
His eyes were glowing now faint but unmistakable.
They looked like that of a wolf but there was no such thing as werewolf.
"I told you to take space," he growled, stepping forward. "Not to go running back to the man you left me for."
Lucia flinched. "I didn't run back to him. He found me. He helped me. She attacked me again"
"And you let him bring you back?"
"I didn't let anyone brings me back, I let Will bring me back"
"Do you still love him?" Kaiden demanded.
Lucia went silent.
Something cracked behind his eyes.
He advanced on her slow, deliberate, until the heat of his body pressed inches from hers.
"Do you still love him?" he repeated, softer but far more dangerous.
Ofcourse she did but she would never admit that to Kaiden, he could murder Wil
Lucia's voice trembled. "Why does it matter?"
"Because you're mine," he snapped.
And then something shifted
His jaw flexed as if holding back a snarl. His hands gripped the arms of the leather chair behind her, caging her in without touching her.
"You are my wife" he said lowly. "You sleep in my bed.
Lucia's chest rose and fell rapidly.
"I can smell him on you," Kaiden growled. "I shouldn't, but I do."
Lucia's eyes widened. "Kaiden"
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying!" she shouted, stepping out of the corner he'd backed her into. "You're acting like I betrayed you just by being seen in public! And do not forget you married me against my will so do not act all righteous"
"You didn't tell him about us," Kaiden hissed. "You didn't tell him you're mine now. That I" He cut himself off.
If only Kaiden knew that she had told Will everything because she couldn't hide anything from him.
Lucia stared. "That you what?"
Kaiden's voice dropped to a whisper. "That I need you."
The words were so out of place, so raw, they stunned her into silence.
He paced again, running a hand through his hair. The gold in his eyes flickered again, barely restrained.
"I see red when he's near you," he admitted.
"You don't get to own me, Kaiden."
"You're not a possession," he said quickly. "But you're still mine."
"That's not better!"
They were both breathing hard now. The space between them charged, electric.
"You want to see what you've done to me?" Kaiden asked suddenly, voice low, ragged.
Lucia narrowed her eyes. "What?"
He didn't wait for permission.
With a shuddering breath, Kaiden let go of the last bit of restraint.
