Chapter 61: Fifth Life, A Strange Aura
The next morning.
"Teacher, we're heading out."
"Grandpa, wait for us to come back!"
Elliot watched them depart for Mondstadt.
After their conversation the night before, something in Eula's heart had clearly changed.
Though she still felt distressed about Elliot's injuries, the guilt had faded.
She had long regretted saying she liked the sound of waves. But after hearing Elliot's words, she came to understand much more—and the guilt that once burdened her began to lift.
If she continued to feel guilty and sink into self-blame over what he'd done, Elliot might begin to question whether his actions were truly right.
Then the meaning of the bone whistle would be lost.
Elliot had gifted her the bone whistle hoping she'd cherish it, that she could blow it freely and hear the sound she loved—the ocean's waves.
But if she continued to torment herself over it, the whistle would no longer bring comfort. It would become a burden.
For both of them.
As the two slowly disappeared from view, Elliot turned and headed toward the shore.
He intended to investigate the mysterious aura he'd sensed the night before.
If his instincts were right, it might just be the key to his next reincarnation.
At the end of each life, the system always made its arrangements with crystal clarity.
And each time, Elliot had no choice but to follow the path it laid out.
Because the system knew him well. It knew he would shoulder the pain himself and pass on the hope to others.
So he never resisted its plans.
Even if the road ahead was certain death, he would still walk it—willingly.
After some travel, he reached the familiar beach. Sitting cross-legged atop a boulder, he closed his eyes and listened to the waves, entering a meditative state as he searched carefully for that elusive aura.
But after two full hours, he sensed nothing.
"Was it really just an illusion...?" Elliot murmured.
He lingered a while longer, trying again. But after confirming there was no trace left, he finally departed.
...
Meanwhile, in Mondstadt—
"I don't care if Eula's a noble's descendant or not! All I know is she's a good person, so stop badmouthing her!"
Amber stood protectively in front of Eula, facing down the crowd pointing fingers at her.
Eula's eyes widened in disbelief as she looked at Amber.
Then, a soft smile spread across her face.
...How foolish I was.
Amber is Teacher's granddaughter—what was I so worried about?
Someone raised by a person like him would never carry the same prejudice as those people.
At that thought, Eula's eyes grew misty.
This was...
The first time someone had ever stood up for her.
She'd been afraid Amber would turn away from her, just like everyone else, once she learned the truth about her heritage—or worse.
So when she came to Mondstadt today with Amber, she had already prepared herself for rejection.
But she never imagined Amber would openly challenge them.
"Amber, we're only saying this for your sake. You're such a smart and sensible girl. Don't hang around with the children of nobles—they'll only corrupt you."
"That's right, Amber, come over here. Stay away from that sinner."
"Amber, we've watched you grow up since you were little. We'd never hurt you. Trust us."
The townsfolk softened when they saw Amber's defiant stance and continued trying to persuade her.
But Amber's eyes were full of determination as she shielded Eula with unwavering resolve.
"Eula is a good person! She would never hurt me! Stop saying bad things about her, or I'll get mad!"
Hands on her hips, Amber huffed angrily.
The crowd exchanged glances, momentarily unsure how to respond, then looked over at Eula.
"All right, all right. Don't be mad, Amber. Here, have a sweet date." An elderly woman stepped forward, smiling warmly.
"Grandma Lin, can I get one for Eula too...?"
Amber's eyes lit up as she pointed to the green sweet dates.
"Of course, child. Go ahead," the old woman said gently.
"Yay! I love you, Grandma Lin!" Amber skipped over joyfully, kissed her cheek, and picked the biggest sweet date for Eula.
"Oh, you little rascal."
Grandma Lin chuckled, her wrinkled face glowing with kindness.
When Eula saw the sweet date being offered to her, she froze for a moment.
Then, slowly, she reached out and accepted it, bowing with perfect manners. "Thank you very much."
"It's nothing. You two must have things to do—go on ahead," Grandma Lin said with a kind smile.
Eula and Amber continued on to the Knights of Favonius headquarters.
Once they were out of sight, the townsfolk gathered around again.
"Grandma Lin, that girl's a noble! I remember how badly the Lawrence family treated you back in the day!"
"Exactly! How could you give her fruit? Have you forgotten what they did to you?"
All eyes were on the elderly woman, stunned by what they'd just witnessed.
"She's just a child."
With those words, Grandma Lin turned and slowly made her way back into her shop.
The others fell silent, exchanging uncertain looks.
...
At the Knights of Favonius, Eula and Amber received a warm welcome.
Amber excitedly showed Eula around, guiding her through the place she knew so well.
She even helped tidy up Eula's dormitory.
Though Eula said she planned to sleep at home, Jean suggested keeping a room ready at the headquarters—just in case. Better safe than sorry.
To others, it looked like a little sister taking care of her older sister.
And so...
Eula silently took note of the grudge.
On her first day, she wasn't given any official assignments. Instead, she learned about the different departments and their responsibilities.
Her actual work wouldn't begin until the following day.
By the time dusk fell, Eula and Amber returned home.
Elliot had already finished preparing dinner and was waiting for them.
As a former Knight himself, he knew exactly what time they'd be off duty.
After dinner, they returned to the beach as usual.
This time, Elliot didn't immediately have Eula practice swordsmanship.
Instead, he asked her to blow the bone whistle.
He suspected that the wave-like sound it produced might have triggered a reaction from some kind of being.
And sure enough, when Eula played the wildest, most intense part of the melody, that familiar aura surfaced again.
Elliot sat down in meditation, carefully trying to trace it.
The moment he caught hold of it, his eyes snapped open, and his brows furrowed deeply.
"This aura..."
