Chapter 17: New Dawn
June 25th. 11:47 AM.
The sun rose over a world reborn. Not cleaner. Not safer. Just... louder.
A courtyard that once echoed with quiet steps and lazy conversations now pulsed with chaos.
People were glowing. Not just with color—but with ego.
"C-rank!" a boy shouted, flames licking his shoulders. "Burnborn Armor, let's go!"
A girl responded with a sharp grin, surrounded by floating blades. "B-plus. And I don't need to scream it."
Dozens more followed. Some tested strength by lifting benches, smashing trash bins, or racing across rooftops.
Others stood back, whispering to each other, unsure whether to act.
One group sparked a riot over who was stronger. Another tried stopping them—with fists, not words.
The Divine System had changed everything. But it hadn't made people better.
It had only made them louder.
---
Kael stood on the edge of it all.
His green glow was faint now. He kept it that way. No one needed to see him. Not yet.
They couldn't.
A screen hovered in his vision.
> [Daily Task: Incomplete]
Complete a selfless act under pressure.
He hadn't acted yet. He wasn't avoiding it. He was waiting.
Then he heard it. A scream.
Not the kind from a sparring match or a staged performance. The kind that made your stomach twist.
Kael turned instantly, body reacting before thought. He sprinted, following the smoke that curled above the west wing of the city.
---
The building was old—one of the smaller orphanage dorms near the edge of the housing zone.
The top floor was on fire. The flames weren't natural.
They flickered with red-gold energy, unstable and wild.
Kael reached the scene and saw it clearly: A young girl, maybe eight, crouched outside the orphanage, crying.
Her hands were glowing.
Nearby, the charred body of a small, dog like beast and long-limbed—still smoked from its wounds.
She had done it.
She had awakened. And in trying to protect herself, she had burned down her own home.
The other orphans had gotten out. But the fire was spreading fast.
Kael didn't hesitate. He ran straight in.
---
Heat pressed against his skin.
Routine Surge activated instinctively.
+100%.
He moved like wind, scooping up a barely-conscious caretaker and carrying her out through the back.
But by then, the roof had already begun collapsing.
Flames licked Kael's arms. He covered the girl with his own body, protecting her from the falling debris.
Pain exploded through his back and shoulders.
But he didn't stop.
He rolled through the side exit, coughing hard.
Smoke filled his lungs. His arms were burned. His back blistered.
The girl trembled in his grasp.
> [Daily Task: Complete]
Reward Acquired: Enhancement Token - Tier 1
Bonus: Dagger of Humility (Tier 1) has been added to Inventory.
He blinked. A weapon appeared in his hand.
Simple. Black hilt. Short silver blade. Unnamed.
But the edge shimmered faintly. It was warm—almost hot.
He winced as the heat bit into his palm.
> Effect: Heated Blade - Light burn damage added on slash.
He didn't have time to admire it.
From the treeline, growls echoed.
Three beasts emerged. Smaller than the one the girl had killed, but no less savage.
> [Lesser Hounds - Rank C]
Pack Creatures. Sensitive to blood. Hunt in vengeance.
Kael gritted his teeth. They were its kin.
They had followed the scent of its death.
He stepped forward. Burns flaring. Dagger pulsing.
The first creature lunged. Kael spun, dodged, and slashed. The blade left a glowing wound—sizzling flesh and bone.
The second followed. Kael blocked with his forearm and countered, stabbing through its neck.
The last snarled. It was faster. Smarter.
Kael feinted, rolled under its leap, and stabbed up through the ribs.
All three collapsed.
He was panting. He wasn't overpowered. Just... efficient.
Barely more than twice as strong as a healthy man. But it was enough.
The girl looked up at him, eyes wide. He said nothing. Just led her to the surviving staff from the orphanage.
They took her, sobbing, into their arms.
He turned away before they could thank him.
---
The green glow around him shimmered onc
e, then faded.
The white silhouette watched.
And Kael?
He prepared.
Because that was just the first kill.
