Chapter 29: Apex Predator (Part 1)
July 8th. 11:46 PM.
The once-glorious city was now a fractured skeleton of what it had been. The wind whispered through scorched steel frames and shattered towers, carrying the scent of ash, blood, and fear. Rubble filled the streets, crushed vehicles rusting under the flickering remains of streetlamps.
Kael walked slowly, cloaked in a torn black robe. The hood covered most of his face, casting shadows across his blood-spattered jaw. His boots echoed softly against the cracked asphalt as he made his way toward the battlefield.
The bell tower he'd defended earlier now loomed behind him, distant and drowned in smoke. He had chased the monster here—to the city's broken heart—because dozens of injured civilians were trapped.
Ahead, the ground rumbled.
Then came the roar.
The Gravespine Tyrant emerged from the ruins, its obsidian-plated form towering over the shattered skyline. Spines like black volcanic blades pulsed along its back. Its breath steamed in the cool night air, and its golden eyes burned with a predatory gleam. Each step cracked concrete beneath its talons.
Behind Kael, a group of trapped civilians huddled in the remains of an underground parking structure—too weak to run, too terrified to scream.
Kael's grip tightened around his soul-bound daggers. With a thought, the Dagger of Humility and Obsidian Dagger appeared in his hands, shimmering with raw energy.

Kael surged forward.
---
He struck low first, slashing the Tyrant's foreleg. Sparks flew as the blade scraped across its plated skin.
No wound.
Kael twisted, flipping backward as the Tyrant's clawed limb smashed down where he'd stood. The shockwave cracked pavement and tossed rubble like shrapnel.
He dashed again, this time climbing the creature's flank like a spider. The Obsidian Dagger hissed with corrosive energy as he drove it beneath a scale near the shoulder joint.
Minimal resistance. Some blood.
The Tyrant roared and spun.
Kael was thrown mid-air by its tail—a freight train of obsidian bone. He crashed through a bent lamppost and skidded along the street.

Rib Damage: Healing...
Lung Pressure: Stabilizing...
Alert: Fatigue Threshold Increasing
Kael got to his feet slowly, dagger still in hand.
The beast charged.
Kael hurled himself into the air, twisting his body, dodging the crushing jaws by inches. He jammed his dagger into the beast's neck from above. This time, blood sprayed—a small victory.
He dropped, landed in a crouch, and immediately launched into another strike.
---
Behind him, civilians watched from their hiding spots.
"Is that... one of ours?" "He's fighting it alone?" "He's... protecting us."
Some stared in awe. Some in horror.
Kael was a blur. A figure of black and green fury.
---
The fight dragged on.
> [Beast HP: ???]
[Kael HP: 51%]
Kael stabbed into the Tyrant's chest—only to be hurled again, this time into a crumbling storefront. Glass and steel folded around him.
> [Injury Heal – Active]
Muscle Tear: Partial Recovery.
Alert: Recovery rate reduced due to system overload.
Kael rolled onto his back, chest heaving.
"Not enough," he rasped. "Even with this... it's not enough."
The Tyrant bellowed. Its eyes scanned for more prey.
Then Kael saw it.
A piece of the Tyrant's lower left jaw, just beneath a layered plate, was cracked and bleeding from an earlier strike. The black bone shimmered faintly—a vulnerable spot.
Kael forced himself to stand.
"Found you," he whispered.
He ran.
Ten steps. Twenty. Dodging debris. Gaining height.
He leapt, twisted, and drove both daggers toward the weakened jaw.
The Tyrant shrieked—a noise so loud it fractured windows.
Kael hit the ground, bounced, and groaned. His left arm hung uselessly.
> [Health: 27%]
[Routine Surge: 12 seconds until recharge]
[Injury Heal: Fatigue Suppression Delayed]
The Tyrant stomped forward.
Kael couldn't move.
Then came the voice.
"Get away from him, you oversized fossil."
A blur of motion.
Elle.
She landed between Kael and the Tyrant, her long spear already glowing faintly. Her jacket was torn, her face scratched, but her eyes blazed with determination.
Kael groaned. "Took you long enough."
Elle didn't take her eyes off the beast. "That jaw. Left side. I saw the blood."
Kael nodded weakly. "We hit it again. Again. Until it dies."
Elle set her stance.
"Then let's end this."
