Chapter 13: Chapter 13
Turning his head slowly to the side, Sunny's eyes met with Gilead's for a moment; his lip trembled and his eyes wavered as he looked into the eyes of a man who helped condemn him to suffering for three cruel, long years.
Fear and anguish quickly turned into anger as Sunny balled up a fist and launched it at the still close by face of Gilead. The fist flew so quickly his classmates didn't see it, and yet, it was just as effective as throwing a rock against a mountain.
Despite the small shockwave that was created by his blow, Gilead caught it in one hand with a disappointed glint in his eyes. "What happened to you, Lost from Light? Three years ago you could hit five times harder than this!" Sunny paid his comment no attention, regardless of how honest he was being, and turned his attention to Nephis.
Her eyes were wide open at Sunny's sudden show of violence, but he didn't care; leaping to his feet, he rushed to Nephis side before roughly grabbing her and kicking open the window. Gilead moved to stop them, his act as a calm and supportive teacher remaining constantly present; however, Sunny hooked his foot around a nearby chair and slammed it into the man's chest.
The attack was utterly ineffective.
Yet, it bought Sunny enough time to leap out the window with Nephis in hand before sprinting out of the school building. He needed to go somewhere, anywhere that would allow him to escape from the watchful eyes of Gilead. How had it gotten to this point? Where had he gone wrong? What could he have done better?
Useless thoughts like these were thrown out from his mind as Sunny continued to run; he didn't know where he was running to, yet his eyes remained constantly focused ahead of him. Turning back now seemed like a vile and painful option that he would rather die before taking. Nephis's screams fell on deaf ears as he leapt from roof to roof, not paying her any attention as he continued to gain distance from the school.
Finally, the fatigue from carrying another person while running at full speed settled in. Sunny slammed his feet into the ground of a secluded area of the outskirts before laying Nephis down gently. Now that he was alone, he had the opportunity to break down. Falling to his knees, Sunny's chest rose and fell rapidly as he gripped his chest with a horrified expression on his face.
"I'm weak, too weak. I'm pathetic!" He moaned out between pants; an open palm colliding with his face tore him from his panic as he looked up to see Nephis. She was shaking her arm slightly; obviously, her attack had hurt her more than it hurt him, yet she did it anyway. "Look at me! Don't pay attention to anything else right now; just look at me till you calm down."
Sunny did as he was told, sitting silently as he looked Nephis in the eyes. "You…might die because of me. You don't deserve that; you're a regular person! You're not stained and dirty like me." His mumbles quickly were drowned out as tears cascaded from his eyes; Nephis moved towards him before enveloping him in a hug, running her hand through his hair gently as tears soaked her white shirt.
"Sunny, listen. I got involved with you because I wanted to; you don't have to blame yourself because of what I did. Just talk to me; tell me what's going on so we can survive this together." Sunny shook his head, not pulling his head backwards, his shoulders trembling as tears fell from his eyes once more. He was spiralling, and he knew it, yet there was nothing he could do.
"You'll end up like the rest of them; they'll kill you too!" He hissed out silently, but Nephis refused to leave him, her grip on him held firm as Sunny finally gave up on pushing her away. Pulling backwards, Nephis ran her hand across his cheek, wiping tears away from his face as she offered him a warm smile.
Memories of his time working for Morgan and Gilead flashed through his mind once more, but he suppressed an outward reaction, forcing cold clarity to rear its head. "I…used to be a criminal. No, I used to be a slave. A slave to a woman named Morgan." His voice was a whisper, yet Nephis remained supremely attentive to the words that came out of his mouth.
"It was when I put my sister up for adoption. I tried to kill myself after, but it didn't work; it never worked! I drowned myself, only to wake up with chains coiled around my neck, and I was locked in a cage, like a dog!" Sunny's lip trembled as he recalled the events. Nephis could only squeeze his arm supportively as his mind drifted back to the day he became Morgan's slave, the day that changed his life forever.
….
Water colliding with the roof of the building tore Sunny from his slumber as the sounds of chains echoed throughout the room he was in. His eyes were out of focus, never truly paying complete attention to a singular object; everything felt hazy and incomplete. 'Am I dead?' He thought to himself, attempting to shift his small body to confirm his suspicions.
However, he was wrong. He wasn't dead. The rustle of chains grew louder as Sunny finally took in the cold, frigid metal that surrounded his neck and arms. Looking down at his arms, he saw they had been pinned together tightly by a large slab of metal that appeared impenetrable. It had a hole where a key could be slotted into, yet there was no key in sight.
No chance of freedom.
Around his neck, Sunny felt a thicker, heavier slab of metal connected to vile, blackened chains that stretched beyond his field of view. Moving with a jolt, he attempted to leap to his feet; however, his head slammed against metal bars roughly as he finally took in the predicament he was in. Sunny was chained and bound in a cage.
There wasn't really much to do, so Sunny counted the seconds. If he really wasn't dreaming, that meant that whoever had saved him didn't plan on allowing him to leave. Biting off his own tongue to end his life once and for all was an alluring option; however, his new predicament provided new opportunities. Who knows, he could get rich!
A heavy metal door groaned and creaked as a gigantic man made his way into the room. Golden hair flowed from his head, seeming to light up the room and make Sunny ignore the large amounts of blood that were splattered across his chest. Sunny knew too well he was too malnourished and weak to even do a thing to the man, but what really drew his attention was the girl next to him.
Darkened, flowing hair, not marred with the dirt and dust that lingered in the heads of all those who came from the outskirts, came into view. Her bright, vermillion eyes blazed with fire as she stared down at him with a contemplative expression. She wore a blackened suit with a red tie and a white shirt beneath it, yet that only served to enhance her beauty. From what he could tell, she was three years older than him, sixteen.
She turned to the lumbering man who stood next to her, nodding slightly. "Gilead, let me and our new guest have some alone time." The newly identified Gilead glided out the door of the room with unprecedented grace for a man of his size, yet Sunny knew he was only just outside the door, crushing any chance of using the girl as a hostage.
The young woman walked up to him, extending a hand through the cold metal bars before roughly grabbing him by the chin. Only then did Sunny realise that he had been stripped bare, leaving only a piece of underwear beneath him to maintain his dignity. Staring at the woman with an indifferent expression, careful not to reveal his mental anguish, he waited for her to tear through the silence.
And so, she did.
"Hello, my name is Morgan. And from this day forth, I will be your master. You will do as I say lest you be punished, but do not worry; I am nothing except supremely fair."
Being someone's slave was a harrowing idea, yet the chance of freedom and a better life promised by enduring for even a moment was too alluring to turn down. 'It isn't my place to speak, right? Slaves don't speak.' He thought to himself as he continued to stare. Morgan's hands were soft and moisturised, the feeling of one who had never experienced hardship radiating through her grip as he continued to lock eyes with her.
She was studying him. Looking at every nook and cranny of his upper body with a pleased expression. "It appears you'll be suitable for the work I may offer you, but you'll need training, of course. Tell me, what is your name?" Sunny cocked his head to the side, curious that his master would ask for the name of her slave, yet he was supremely compliant.
"Sunless."
Morgan nodded pleasantly, her thumb snaked its way upwards, prying open his mouth before pulling him closer to the bars of the cage. She was studying his teeth, quite an invasive process. Sunny resisted every instinctual urge to bite off her finger, knowing it promised a brutal and painful death. And so he chose to endure.
"You appear to be healthy enough, Sunless. And your body is perfect for the type of work I'll need you to be doing." Suddenly, she grasped at the chain that was bound to the slab of metal resting on his neck. Roughly pulling on it, she slammed Sunny's face into the cold metal bars as he released a yelp of pain. Morgan smiled, a sickening, awestruck smile as she stared down at his face.
"Wonderful, your face is wonderful!" Her hands snaked around his neck, pressing roughly against his windpipe and preventing oxygen from rushing to his brain. Sunny felt his vision fade as he saw Morgan wear another sickening grin across her face. As suddenly as she had choked him, she let go. Her eyes were glazed over with the sick pleasure she received from hurting him.
She even lacked the decency to wipe the grin off her face as she took a step back, releasing him from being pressed against the cold bars of his cage. Turning to the door, she knocked on it in a particular pattern before Gilead pulled open the heavy metal door with relative ease. "I want this one in my room." She stated simply, before briskly walking past him.
Now, Sunny was left in the room with the gigantic man. He had pushed himself into the corner of the cage to get as far away from the gigantic ogre-like figure as possible. The man said no words, moving towards his cage before placing a hand on its two metal bars. In a single movement, he pulled them apart with a grunt of effort, leaving enough room for Sunny to crawl out of.
Yet he didn't move. The man stared at him with a smile before reaching in and grabbing him by the neck, throwing him out of the cage roughly. "You're going to be Lady Morgan's pet from now on. You better pray you serve her well because I'm not nearly as pleasant as she is."
And on that day, hell on earth started for him.
