Chapter 1: Parfait
Break time at school is the best, right? It's that golden hour when everyone rushes to the canteen to snag their favorite snacks after hours of relentless studying.
But then there are those who choose to linger in class, like two peculiar students who seem perfectly content with their decision.
The classroom was surprisingly quiet; most of the students had fled to the cafeteria, leaving just the two of us behind.
"I want to be rich!" I exclaimed, throwing my hands up dramatically, earning a startled glance from the boy sitting across from me.
"Huh…?" Arthur, the blonde-haired wonder with the dazzling blue eyes, looked utterly confused. "What are you saying all of a sudden, Arche?"
Yes, it's me—the aspiring millionaire! "I want to be rich…" I whispered, trying to sound serious.
"Now you whisper it…" he replied, raising an eyebrow.
I leaned in closer, lowering my voice even further. "I want to be rich, Arthur! Don't you get it?"
"Of course I understand, but why this sudden urge for wealth?" His tone was a mix of curiosity and concern.
"Because…" I took a deep breath, dramatically pulling out a crumpled flyer from my pocket. "Tomorrow, there's a limited edition parfait!"
Arthur glanced at the flyer, his eyes narrowing at the price printed boldly on it: five thousand yen. "Didn't you just get paid from your part-time job?"
Caught off guard, I avoiding his piercing gaze. "What? I didn't hear you."
"Arche… What did you use your money for?" he pressed, narrowing his eyes like a hawk.
I sighed, my shoulders slumping.
"Um… I bought a new basketball…"
I muttered, barely above a whisper.
"Didn't you just buy a basketball last month?" Arthur's annoyance was palpable, and I could almost feel the heat radiating off him.
"It got lost…" I admitted, knowing full well it was my own fault.
Arthur took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. "I'm willing to lend you money."
"No way! I already owe you ten thousand yen! I can't possibly add to my debt!" I shot back defiantly.
"Then what are you going to do?" he asked, exasperation creeping into his voice.
"I have no idea at all!" I declared, puffing out my chest proudly.
"I knew it…" Arthur sighed, shaking his head in disbelief.
Suddenly, a voice broke through our little brainstorming session.
"Agh! You guys are so noisy, aren't you?"
We turned to see Elaina, her ashen hair cascading over her blue eyes, holding a pen and surrounded by a flurry of papers.
She looked like she was in the middle of some serious work.
"Ah, sorry, Elaina!" Arthur replied, his tone shifting to one of contrition.
"Oh! Elaina! Can you help me?" I piped up, excitement bubbling in my chest.
"Help you?" Elaina raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by my sudden request.
"What kind of help do you need?"
"Can you help me earn five thousand yen in one day?!" I blurted out, grinning like I'd just discovered a treasure map.
"...Five thousand yen in one day...?" Elaina echoed, her disbelief palpable.
"Why? Do you have a debt or something?" Her sarcasm was thick enough to cut through.
"I want to buy the limited edition parfait!" I explained, waving the flyer like a victory flag.
"Do you have any ideas?"
Her eyes widened in shock. "So, you need five thousand yen... to buy a parfait?" she asked, incredulity written all over her face.
I nodded enthusiastically, my determination unwavering.
"Arche, you could just ask your mother for money," Arthur suggested, deadpan.
"My mother is busy!" I shot back, crossing my arms defiantly.
Arthur let out a resigned sigh, as if he was used to my antics by now.
Meanwhile, Elaina seemed to be deep in thought. "A one-day job, huh…?" she muttered to herself, her brow furrowing in concentration.
After a moment, she took a deep breath, looking back at me.
"Can't you just wait until your mother is free and then ask her?"
"Elaina… I can only get the parfait tomorrow!" I replied, panic starting to seep into my voice.
She fixed me with a firm stare.
"Then you're screwed, because you only have twelve more hours to get five thousand yen."
Hearing Elaina's words, I quickly turned to Arthur, determination etched on my face. "Alright, Arthur! After school, we have to earn a living!"
Arthur's expression shifted from confusion to shock. "Wait, are you serious? Can we really earn five thousand yen for you to buy a parfait?" he asked, his tone a mix of disbelief and concern.
"We can! Let's skip class!" I declared, my enthusiasm spilling over.
"Skipping class?! Wait a minute!" Arthur protested, his eyes widening. "Just for a parfait?!"
"Just for a parfait!" I shouted, bouncing in my seat with excitement.
Arthur facepalmed, shaking his head at my priorities. "You really have weird priorities…" he murmured, half-amused and half-exasperated.
In the end, I decided against skipping class. When the school day wrapped up, I rushed straight to my part-time job, ready to work hard for my dream parfait.
As the closing time approached, I knocked on my boss's door. "May I come in, Boss?"
"Yeah, you can come in," my boss, Albert, replied, his voice gruff yet inviting.
I stepped inside, finding him perched behind his desk, sipping on a cup of black coffee.
Oh, I haven't mentioned where I work yet, huh? I'm a barista and a waiter at a cozy little café.
"Boss, there's something I want to talk about," I said, sliding into the chair across from him.
Albert looked up from his coffee, raising an eyebrow. "What is it?"
"Well, I kind of need a little extra from my pay—just 5,000 yen. There's something important I want to buy," I explained, trying to sound as convincing as possible.
His frown deepened, clearly unimpressed. "Your pay's already set, you know. I don't usually hand out extra cash."
I flashed him a nervous smile, refusing to back down. "Yeah, I understand, Boss. But this is a one-time thing, I promise."
I leaned in, lowering my voice for effect. "You can even deduct it from my future pay. Think of it as a small loan."
Albert stared at me, weighing my request. "So, you want me to give you an extra 5,000 yen now, and then I'll cut your pay until it's paid back?"
I nodded eagerly, my heart racing. "Exactly, Boss. Just this once, I won't ask for more."
After a moment's thought, Albert finally sighed, a slow nod escaping his lips. "Alright, I'll give you the extra 5,000 yen."
"But I'll be deducting it from your pay until it's all repaid. And don't expect this to happen again anytime soon," he warned, his expression stern.
I let out a relieved sigh.
"Thanks so much, Boss! You're really understanding."
He shook his head, but a small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"Just remember, this is the last time I'll be giving you any breaks."
And just like that, I secured the extra cash I needed, even if it meant dealing with smaller paychecks for a while.
But hey, anything for that limited edition parfait, right?
After securing the extra money, I skipped back to my apartment, my spirits soaring. "Yesss!!"
"Finally, I can buy the limited parfait!" I hummed happily, envisioning the delicious treat. But as night fell, I remembered the old saying:
It's a dangerous night for teenagers!
Just as I rounded the corner, a group of thugs blocked my path. Ugh, thugs. I've always had a special disdain for them—unemployed losers who refuse to try.
"Hey, kid! You've got a lot of cash there, huh?" One of the thugs eyed the money I was holding, a sly grin spreading across his face.
"Why don't you give us a little? We just want... all of it!" He laughed, his buddies joining in with sinister chuckles.
I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms defiantly. "Huh? Thugs and beggars are starting to look more and more alike, aren't they? But at least beggars ask politely."
The thug's expression soured.
"Unlike trash like you, you don't deserve to be in this world."
"Even if you died, it would have a positive impact on society," I shot back.
"Are you looking for death?" he growled, stepping closer.
I laughed, my confidence unwavering. "Haha... dead? You're the ones who should be worried!"
Without a word, one of them charged at me first, throwing a heavy punch—too slow.
I swiftly sidestepped and threw a quick jab to his jaw, catching him off guard. Wasting no time, I followed up with a left hook, landing it squarely on his cheekbone.
The sound of the impact was clear as he staggered back.
Two more lunged toward me. I blocked one of their punches with my forearm, countering with an uppercut that hit his chin dead on, sending him stumbling.
The other tried to kick me, but I caught his leg, pulling him toward me and swiftly throwing him to the ground.
The thud of his body hitting the pavement was heavy, and before he could rise, I locked him in a chokehold, making sure he wouldn't move.
From the corner of my eye, I saw another one rushing in. I stood up, taking a few steps back, waiting for him to make his move.
As his punch came flying, I turned slightly, letting it miss. In a split second, I unleashed a cross with all my strength.
"Why? Are you sleepy?"
The punch landed directly on his nose, blood spurting as he crumpled to the ground, unable to get up.
The last thug stood frozen, hesitant, but still determined to attack. He swung wildly, full of rage. "You bastard!"
I blocked it, then followed with a sharp kick to his ribs. He winced in pain, but I didn't give him a chance to recover.
"Slow!"
I stepped in, grabbed his body, and executed a simple throw, sending him crashing to the ground.
I immediately locked his wrist in place, making him completely powerless.
One by one, they fell, sprawled on the ground. I stood in the midst of them, still alert, my breathing steady.
"It looks like it's past their bedtime," I quipped, trying to lighten the mood as I watched the thugs sprawled on the ground.
But then, a sinking feeling hit me. I glanced down and gasped. "Ah! My precious five thousand yen!"
I looked around, horrified to see my hard-earned cash lying in the mud.
"My money!"
"Ah! Fuckk!" I shouted in frustration. "This is all because of you guys..."
I glared at the unconscious thugs, annoyance bubbling inside me.
"You will suffer the consequences..."
After a quick call to the police and a series of tedious questions, I finally got them arrested.
Feeling drained, I trudged back to my apartment, the weight of the day pressing down on me. "Ah…"
I flopped onto my bed, exhaustion washing over me. "Damn it…"
The next day, at the restaurant where the limited edition parfait was sold, I strolled in, brimming with excitement. Finally, I could indulge!
As I savored the gigantic parfait, its deliciousness was beyond my expectations. "Very delicious!"
"Is it that good?" Arthur asked, plopping down next to me with his usual curiosity.
He had ordered a honey muffin, his favorite, along with a small feast of honey-based treats. He really loved the taste of honey.
"So I owe you Fifteen thousand yen now, huh?" I sighed, remembering the debt looming over me again.
"You should have just asked that thug for money," Arthur replied nonchalantly.
I scoffed, taking a deep breath. "There was no money in their pants at all. They were all talk!"
"Enough! I don't want to talk about them anymore. They just kill my appetite."
Arthur chuckled, and we both settled into enjoying our desserts, the sweet taste of victory (and parfait) washing away the troubles of yesterday.
