Second chance: I will let you marry my husband.

Chapter 9: The tense encounter

The day had been rough because she could hardly ignore caleb and solana.

The next day, she thought of buying Tony some pain relievers for the scars he had, which seemed to be caused by heat from a hot kettle.

Tony sat in his comfortable seat in his well-arranged office. His desk was full of documents and files, and the case of his computer was made of ignition-resistant material. He was conducting a background check on Sarafina's status since he had vowed to protect those he loved if he ever had the opportunity to go back in time.

He remembered what had happened at Sarafina's burial when certain truths began to emerge—she came from a wealthy family, and there was also the case of her uncle, as well as the real reasons behind her close mate bullying her.

Determined to help, he decided to assist her with the upcoming conference and the end-of-school gathering scheduled for Saturday of the same week. Then, he checked if the reservation was still available or had been canceled. He called the restaurant manager and was relieved to hear that the plan was still on.

After that, he resolved to find someone who knew the truth about everything that had happened—one of Sarafina's classmates, the person for whom she had been framed in the past. That classmate was the only one who truly knew the truth behind the bullying.

This was Tony's plan—a plan to change the future he had experienced.

She went to Tony's office to give him the pain reliever she had bought at the pharmacy. He took it from her, saying, "I appreciate it." He divided the tablet into halves and handed one half back to her since she had been injured yesterday while trying to avoid Caleb. Though Tony didn't know exactly why or how she had been hurt, he could tell something was wrong.

She took the pain reliever and said, "Thank you for your kindness," after a brief hesitation. She then added, "I want to let you know that I've decided to continue working hard, especially since you said I'm talented." Tony smiled and said, "I trust you, and I'm proud of you."

She smiled in return, saying a final, "Thank you," before turning to leave.

Caleb, who had been watching them through the transparent glass of the office, was desperate to understand what was going on between them.

As she walked back to her desk, Caleb texted her, asking her to meet him in the storage room.

When she entered, he immediately asked, "Do you want to leave me for Tony?" His words were full of desperation. She hesitated for a moment.

She thought about breaking up with him right there and then, but knew it would be too dangerous. Finally, she declared, "No, I'll never do that. I don't want to break up with you. At first, I wasn't sure what I was thinking, feeling disappointed in myself. All I need is a caring and loving boyfriend, and I have you. I'm so lucky," she said, her heart racing in her chest.

He replied, "You better not be thinking of him. Just because he's the CEO doesn't mean he has the qualities and intellect that I offer."

Sarafina didn't want to continue the discussion, so she quickly thought of an excuse. "Tony asked me to get him a bandage for the wound he got on his arm from the hot kettle," she said, trying to avoid further questioning. "Don't get confused," she declared, then added, "No one is better than you. All I want is a healthy relationship that everyone will envy and want to steal you away from me," she said, her tone attempting to be convincing.

Caleb smiled, seeming reassured. "I thought you were being silly. What other people think doesn't matter. What matters is what we think. I'll always pay attention from now on."

"Let's make up," he suggested.

Sarafina's heart skipped a beat. She didn't want to make up with him; she only wanted to make excuses to save face. Reluctantly, she replied, "Okay," and started to move toward the narrow storage room's exit.

But Caleb grabbed her hand, pulling her closer. "No, wait," he said, leaning in to kiss her.

She pulled back slightly, trying to resist. "Don't," she said, but he countered, "No one is coming."

As his lips were about to crash into hers, Sarafina desperately searched for something to defend herself with. Just as the tension peaked, the door of the storage room suddenly swung open.
