Chapter 5 - Commotion
A giant, appearing to be about 2.5 meters tall. Not just tall, but a monster with a body the size of a mountain.
A Minotaur-type mutant.
Its head wasn’t completely that of a bull, merely having bull horns, so it might be a bit incorrect to call it a minotaur from mythology… but the destruction it caused with its massive body was no ordinary level.
Boom! Crash!
And its eyes were bloodshot as it went around destroying every sculpture and structure around it.
As if it had lost its reason.
The ground was overturned, and the asphalt shattered. Along with it, the cafe I used to frequent.
I clearly remember seeing something about this on the internet recently.
Stories about a Minotaur-type mutant causing a disturbance.
I could roughly figure out the situation.
A mutant who was subdued for causing a disturbance escaped after various complications, and now is causing this chaos.
And perhaps it’s a mutant characteristic that once they lose the thread of reason, it’s difficult to regain it.
Otherwise, there’s no way it would destroy the surroundings to this extent. How much would the compensation for damages be?
No sane person would cause this much destruction. So, I had no choice but to judge that it wasn’t in its right mind.
“Uwooooooh!”
With a deafening roar that felt like it might make my eardrums fall off, the creature eventually set its sights on a person.
What it was looking at was… a female student.
“Aaaaaaah!”
Unfortunately, the female student had become the creature’s target, perhaps because their eyes met.
Watching the student flee in terror, I felt that her appearance was somewhat familiar.
Wait.
Isn’t that… a freshman in our department?
Vaguely, I remembered my classmates gushing about a pretty girl who had entered our department.
Her name was… Lee Sihyun, I think?
I remember seeing her once during orientation, but I never expected to encounter her in a situation like this.
What a strange coincidence.
Sihyun was wearing the uniform of the cafe I used to visit frequently when delivering side dishes to my sister before my mutation.
It seems she was working at the cafe when this happened.
I could have been just a little too late, and something unpleasant might have happened.
Anyway… now that I’ve assessed the situation, it was time to stop that brute.
Hanguk University freshman, Lee Sihyun, was in despair at the sudden situation she faced.
It was just an ordinary day.
While she was busily working at the cafe near her apartment.
A sudden disaster alert.
And unfortunately, the location was Hanguk University Station.
While she was debating whether to evacuate or not.
People started to flee as a mutant suddenly burst into the cafe… and she also screamed and ran away.
Since she was in the middle of her part-time job, she was the last one to escape from the cafe.
Fortunately, the minotaur was only causing indiscriminate destruction, so Sihyun had no problem escaping.
But… while fleeing, thinking she had gone far enough, she turned her head, and Sihyun’s eyes met those of the minotaur.
The minotaur, which had been destroying its surroundings after losing its reason, harbored infinite murderous intent towards the one who made eye contact with it.
It had found a target on which to vent its anger that had been spilling out aimlessly.
And Sihyun also felt that murderous intent.
She continued running, screaming.
But the distance was closing.
She tried to move faster, but rather, the fragile female student’s body betrayed its owner’s will.
Her legs gave out.
“Ugh…!”
She tried to get up after falling, but she couldn’t. Her strength had completely drained due to fear.
She looked back. The mutant was now right in front of her.
I’m going to die.
Sihyun thought this as she trembled. There was nothing she could do.
She felt the minotaur’s hand approaching.
At the moment when the giant hand, large enough to throw a car with one hand, approached her… Lee Sihyun closed her eyes in fear.
But.
Nothing happened.
‘…?’
Sihyun half-opened her eyes. Because the pain that should have come didn’t arrive.
And with her half-opened eyes, what she witnessed was a woman with long black hair, dressed entirely in black.
Wearing her hat low, she muttered something.
“Wow… if I had been a little later, it could have been a disaster.”
Just before the minotaur’s hand reached Sihyun, I grabbed its wrist.
Crack-!
With a savage sound, my small hand gripped the wrist of the Minotaur-type mutant and twisted it.
Fortunately, my groundless confidence seemed to have some ground.
The doctor’s words that the longer the mutation period, the stronger one becomes, must have been true.
Even the creature that was literally smashing the center of the busy area couldn’t shake off my small grip.
“Uwoooargh-!”
Perhaps due to the sudden pain, it became even more enraged and went berserk. It tried to snatch me with its other hand… but I could see all of its movements.
Even though I had never learned any martial arts or anything like that, and had long forgotten the self-defense techniques I learned in the military, I immediately knew what moves I should make.
If I can see everything the opponent is doing, and the opponent is slower than me, there’s no reason I can’t deal with it. I also grabbed the other wrist that was extending towards me.
And then I slammed both arms down hard, burying the creature into the ground.
Crash!
The already shattered asphalt cracked even more. I hope this won’t be billed to me.
Come on, no matter how messed up the country is, surely they wouldn’t hold me responsible for this incident?
Anyway, the creature buried in the ground didn’t move.
It seems to have passed out.
I turned around slightly. Sihyun was looking at me with a bewildered expression, as if wondering what she had just witnessed.
Yet, seeing her whole body still trembling, it seemed the fear ingrained in her body hadn’t disappeared yet.
“Are you okay? You’re not hurt, are you?”
“Ah, yes? Yes. Th-thank you.”
“That’s a relief.”
“Um, are you… a mutant?”
“How else could I have beaten up that brute monster?”
“Ah.”
“Can you stand up? Should I help you?”
“Yes, yes! I can stand up. I’m fine. Thank you.”
Rambling incoherently, Sihyun tried to get up but then flopped back down. Her legs seemed to have given out.
I extended my hand to her.
“You don’t look fine to me.”
“Ah, that’s… I was so scared…”
“I understand. If I were working at a cafe and a monster like that came in destroying the place, I would have been terrified too. Here. Let me help you up.”
“Th-thank you.”
“Put strength in your legs. Can you walk?”
“Yes. The trembling has stopped now. Thank you so much for saving me…”
“No, well… It was something I had to do.”
“…Had to do?”
I smiled awkwardly at her question.
“If monsters like that rampage, it would be hard for me to walk the streets too. I stepped in because I wanted to show that not all mutants are violent.”
“Ah.”
“Anyway, go home quickly. It’s not good to stay in a place like this for long…”
Boom!
Before I could finish my sentence, a loud noise erupted from behind. Ah, this bastard. His constitution is ridiculously tough.
Seeing him get up perfectly fine after being slammed with that much impact, it’s no wonder he was able to escape.
I remembered what the doctor had said.
Some mutants are exceptionally tough.
“Hii, hiiik…!”
Oh dear. It seems our Miss Lee Sihyun’s legs have given out again.
Well, ingrained fear doesn’t easily disappear.
What can I do?
I’ll have to use more force.
The creature shook its head once and looked at me.
Its eyes, already bloodshot with anger, were now so red that the whites were almost gone.
I suddenly felt sorry for it.
That level of intensity suggests its mind has become so unstable due to mutation that it can’t control itself.
Perhaps, this person was an ordinary person like me.
Perhaps, I could have become like this person.
Thinking about it, I should at least try to make him regain his senses.
Instinctively, I realized what I needed to do to knock him out.
The doctor had said after the medical check was completed:
I would naturally come to know what characteristics and abilities I had.
He was right.
I feel something stirring inside my body.
And I knew what would happen when I released that stirring power.
Lightning.
Yes. I realized I could control lightning.
No one had told me, and I hadn’t tried it before. I just naturally knew.
Come to think of it, didn’t they say taser guns work on mutants?
If delivering a moderate amount of current to the body can subdue such mutants, then lightning would also be a very effective means of subduing them.
If its constitution is so tough, it should be able to withstand this much.
Sihyun once again sat down with a thud.
Unlike before, she didn’t feel particularly urgent or desperate.
It was because she had a vague feeling that the beautiful woman in front of her would protect her.
A fierce wind whirled around the black-clad woman who faced the minotaur-type mutant that had stood up again.
“Kyaa!”
Eventually, the woman’s hat fell in front of her due to the wind pressure. Sihyun looked up and gazed at the woman in front of her.
On top of her fluttering long black hair were curled horns, even darker than her hair color.
Zap-!
And electricity sparkled from her horns. The black horns gradually turned white.
After that, a streak of lightning shot from the woman’s horns towards the sky, and soon dark clouds formed in the clear, sunny sky where there hadn’t been a single cloud.
The appearance of mutants itself was an unreal event, but what was happening in front of Sihyun now was even more unreal.
None of the mutants revealed so far had shown abilities like what was in front of her eyes.
Rumble-!
After a tremendous sound from the dark clouds, lightning much larger in scale than what had been emitted from the horns struck down towards the minotaur-type mutant.
Flash-!
The field of vision was brightly colored for a moment, and the minotaur-type mutant, which had been standing arrogantly, fell backward in that same posture. Smoke was rising from the mutant’s body.
Crash!
What was heard simultaneously with the flash was a sound like a giant shell exploding that might deafen one immediately. Due to the thunder and lightning, there was even a temporary power outage in the vicinity.
Sihyun looked at the woman with a blank expression.
