Seraphim is a Bystander

vol. 1 chapter 3 - The end of men, the beginning of angels

The end of men, the beginning of angels

Reflected in the water at my feet was a girl with long black hair, wrapped in a white veil, radiating both beauty and cuteness in perfect balance.

“…You’ve got to be kidding me.”
I started patting myself down to check the unfamiliar sensations of my new body. The soft, smooth texture of my skin, the much slimmer frame—everything was undeniably different from a few seconds ago.
And then…

“…Oh.”
As expected, that one piece of anatomy I’d only used a few times in my life—the defining symbol of manhood—was gone. In its place… well, I wouldn’t call it a fair trade, but I now had a modest amount of soft tissue on my chest. Definitely not muscle.
Compared to my specs in life, the difference was night and day. I mean, I literally looked like something people would mistake for an angel.

As I examined this unfamiliar yet undeniably attractive body reflected in the water…
…Well, I guess being cute isn’t so bad!
Honestly, it’s not like I had any real attachment to my old body. It was a source of constant insecurity. So now that I’ve become a cute girl and I get to avoid eternal torment in hell? Yeah, I’d call that a win.

With that surprisingly easy conclusion reached, my mind quickly shifted to the heavenly “labor” Ramiel-san mentioned earlier.
And right on cue, she spoke up:
“Are you feeling settled now? I’d like to explain the details of your assignment.”

“Sorry to keep you waiting. Please go ahead.”
“Of course.”
With her ever-pleasant smile, Ramiel-san began to explain:

“The job you’ll ★ 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 ★ be performing is a kind of messenger or liaison within Heaven.”
“A liaison?”
“Yes. Though not quite like me—I deliver messages directly from our Lord. Your role will involve handling internal communications between departments in the Celestial Realm.”
As she went into more detail, I learned that Heaven had many different departments, each responsible for different duties. But surprisingly, there was no email system or anything like that. Messages were passed around either telepathically—if one had the ability—or by paper or word of mouth.

“Until now, whoever happened to be available would handle the communication, but by assigning you as a dedicated liaison, we hope to improve efficiency.”
“I see. So… how exactly will I deliver messages?”
“Primarily, via spoken word.”

“…Sorry, what?”
“Oral communication. We angels were granted perfect memory by the Lord. Once we hear something, we never forget it.”
…Huh. At first, I thought wow, what a low-tech communication method, but it made sense—angels are operating on a completely different level than humans.

“Um, yeah, but I’m not sure I can remember everything I hear…”
I voiced my very reasonable concern, and Ramiel-san tilted her head slightly, then gave a small laugh.
“Fufu. That won’t be a problem. You’ve also been given the body of an angel by the Lord.”

“Wait, this body is actually… an angel’s?!”
“Yes, that’s right. Since we’re on the subject, shall I explain more about it?”
According to Ramiel-san, my current body falls under the lowest rank of celestial beings—the category simply called “Angel.”

Even though it’s the lowest, anything personally created by God is absurdly overpowered compared to humans. My body now has perfect memory, requires no rest or sleep, and even has the ability to fly thanks to functional wings.
…By the way, Ramiel-san is a rank two celestial—known as a Cherub.
“I see… I think I understand now.”

“I’m glad to hear that.”
Ramiel-san smiled warmly. As I mentally reviewed everything we’d talked about, I found I could recall it all word for word. If this was the real deal…
Flap!

“…Whoa. They actually came out.”
Just trying to fly made a pair of wings sprout from my back. Despite never having had wings before, I instinctively understood how to move them. It was like my athletic ability had been maxed out, too.
“Looks like everything’s working properly,” Ramiel-san said.

“Yeah, seems like it.”
“Then I’ll deliver the final message from our Lord. Once that’s done, you’ll officially be recognized as an angel and can begin your work as a liaison.”
With that, she pulled out a different parchment and began to read aloud:

“Minato Kushiki,
By granting you a new name, I hereby recognize you as one of my angels.
Your new name shall be Seras.”

At the moment Ramiel-san declared my new name, a strange voice—neither clearly male nor female—echoed along with hers. It overlapped her voice, as if woven together.

When the message ended, the parchment in Ramiel’s-san hands turned into glowing particles of light and began to gather above my head. Just as they filled my field of vision, I felt it—an undeniable change.
“…This is… amazing.”
The light had formed a halo above my head. It wasn’t just an ornament—I could feel it. It became a new kind of sensory organ, something entirely different from my original five senses. I could sense a broader world now, things I couldn’t before.

While I was still marveling at the transformation, Ramiel-san smiled kindly and said:

“With this, you have officially become an angel.
I hope you’ll do your best at your new job… Seras.”
