Chapter 29: The Silent Promise 18+
After everything that needed to be planned for their great battle against the Mad Prince, it was time to do one more thing: acquire the prison the Mad Prince was being held in from Sunny. But before any of that could happen, she had to do one more thing: call a taxi.
She had told them all that the discussion with the Sin of Solace could very well be life-altering for some of them.
"Sadly, I was right," she thought bitterly as she cried to herself because of the immense stress the Sin of Solace caused her. Only the cone of light from the streetlight she stood under was a witness to her mentally broken figure.
She and Cassie had a lot to talk about, but neither of them was ready for that conversation. It could mean the end of their friendship, after all.
In the end, it wasn't important at the moment; what was important, though, was getting Sunny through this mess without dying. A possibility she had thought about a lot, and no matter how much she tried to deny it, she knew that this clash of titanic powers could very well mean the end for some, if not all, of her friends—and her own.
The Mad Prince, as the name suggested, wasn't a reasonable entity. True, he loved her—so much so that he wouldn't share her with anyone. His love for her had become a brutal obsession she was scared to face. After all, deep inside that mad beast was still the man who had lived thousands of years and died millions of times just to be with her.
That was something she could not wrap her head around: how someone could love a person so much that they would sacrifice everything just to be with them.
But she didn't have to think about how it was possible because, in the next moment, two arms wrapped themselves around her from behind.
Nephis's heart sank; she panicked for a second before realizing who it was.
Sunny had decided to pick her up. Although he hadn't gotten that hint from Cassie, he could feel that Nephis was deeply disturbed.
She leaned backward into him. His arms wrapped tightly around her while her body calmed down, and her mind slowly followed. Here, in his arms, the world could not hurt her, and the future she pictured in her head seemed not so unachievable anymore.
"Why haven't you sent me a text? I suppose you and Cassie are having a bit of a clash at the moment?"
His voice carried the depressing feeling out of her body as she could slowly feel unconsciousness claiming her. She was exhausted and was not afraid to show that in the face of the man she would go to hell and back for.
No matter how many times it took, she had already done it, after all.
"Yes, we… we are… let's just say I will have to talk with her after this is all over. But I have a question for you, Sunny."
She slowly turned around, and seconds later, Sunny saw a scene he wished to never see again. Nephis's face showed depths of exhaustion and sadness he had never seen in anyone else—except for himself, of course—so he knew exactly how she felt right now.
That was something he wished on nobody, and especially not the love of his life.
"Why… why didn't you tell me?"
Sunny was neither confused nor surprised to hear the question. His condition was something he kept a secret for that very reason: because he knew that only pain could come from having such a conversation.
"I didn't want you to worry. I know it's selfish, but I just wanted to enjoy the time we have left without worrying about the future more than we already do."
The tears forming in his eyes slowly rolled down his face as Nephis pressed her lips against his own. That was all she could do in the moment, and nothing could stop her from enjoying it as much as she could.
When their lips parted, Sunny took a step. A moment later, the dimly lit living room came into view as they both settled on the couch for what was about to be a conversation of hearts they both needed.
"So it's true; you are dying. How bad is it really?"
The question was barely above a whisper, as she was scared of the answer like a kid in the face of an apex predator.
Sunny met her eyes, which were focused on him with a piercing gaze. Nothing he could say right now could make her feel better.
After all, he had to say the truth.
It would be a blessing to be able to lie to her in that very moment. But they both knew that it wouldn't happen.
"I… I have maybe a month or two left before the corruption fully consumes me. Even if he dies, I'm already too far gone."
Those words shook Nephis's world to its core. No matter how much hope she still had left, this last thing he had told her shattered it all. Once again, she broke out into tears. Her body shook relentlessly as she tried to find solace in his arms.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm… so… sorry," she uttered between sobs. She didn't know what to do and felt like her favorite wizard didn't have a solution this time. But she was wrong.
"Before I fall completely into corruption, I'm… I'm gonna end it all. I can't risk this thing taking control of me and destroying all life…"
She shut him up with a kiss. She had no other idea what to do, but listening to Sunny about killing himself was even more unbearable than the whole situation already was.
"Shut up, shut up, shut up… SHUT… UP."
Nephis pounded on his chest weakly while drowning her mind in a river in Egypt.
"We… we're gonna find a way. Haven't we done this all our lives? Doing the impossible? I refuse to let you die. I will do everything in my power to save you. I love you, Sunny; why can't we have the life we deserve?"
Her tears fell down on his face while she felt her world crumbling. Sunny just laid there, powerless. He brought a hand up to her face and slowly rubbed his thumb along her cheek.
"You are the only reason that kept me sane all that time. Even though I had forgotten you, my heart longed for you, and that alone is why I made it so far.
Thank you, Neph.
But this time, there is no way around it. I don't have a solution for this issue, and neither do you. Not even the gods or the daemons could deal with it any other way. Death is what awaits me, and this time I can't kill it."
Sunny had long accepted the reality of his situation. Now it was time for Nephis to do the same. She knew that the last days they had left shouldn't be spent in sorrow, and so they didn't.
She leaned down to him and whispered words into his ear that would mark a moment in history she would forever cherish.
"I need you, Sunny; I need you to help me distract us both from this world full of pain. Please… let us do what we do best, together."
A bittersweet smile formed on their lips as they undressed each other. There was no time or need for words. Everything they could ever ask for was by their sides, and if it meant forsaking their duties to humanity, so be it.
In each other's arms, they took in every detail of their bodies while only their heartbeats were audible. They both slowly exhaled as the breath they both held carried the depressing thoughts out of their bodies.
Sunny was about to conjure a condom from the shadows but was abruptly stopped by Nephis. She shook her head leisurely before bringing up a hand to his chin.
"I want to feel you like I never felt you before. No more excuses; the world can save itself for once."
Sunny gave her a soft smile before laying her down in front of him. They both held their gaze fixed on each other while pushing away the outside world that was trying to hurt them.
Soon enough, the carefully crafted world they created for themselves descended upon them as they both felt a closeness that transcended the boundaries of the physical realm.
"How will I ever live without you?" she moaned between deep breaths while her eyes bloomed with passion and love.
"I don't know; I ask myself the same question all the time."
A weak chuckle escaped her lips before Sunny brought her up from the couch, making her sit on his lap while he continued to give her unforgettable memories.
Their lips met again; this time, there was nothing soft or careful about the encounter. Both were hungry for more, and that was all that mattered.
While moans and groans from both their lips escaped between breaks, the feeling of getting closer to the edge dawned on both of them. They were both ready for it and had both wished for it. Now it was time to make their wish come true as a team.
Although one of them wouldn't be able to live in that beautiful future.
As the moans and screams of pleasure reached a breaking point that threatened to shatter the windows, both felt like the life inside of them reached heights of unbearable intensity. Nephis could feel her insides being filled to the brim while trying to keep a hold of herself.
That feeling was a promise for a better future where she would have someone to remember Sunny by. Even though she had successfully drowned herself in denial, deep down, she knew that their child could very well be the last thing she would be able to remember him by.
"You are gonna be a wonderful mom."
"And you are gonna be a wonderful dad. I have not given up on you."
A kiss between the two concluded their promise to never give up. To do it all over again if it meant that they ended up in this moment.
That day, two souls joined to create another: an impossible combination between a Nephilim and a divine shadow. The world seemed to recognize the conception of another divine being as the sun broke through the windows and drowned the room in a beautiful orange light that seemed to be drawn to the two beings that were still joined and continued to be as unconsciousness claimed their minds, and they fell asleep in each other's arms.
The smile on their lips never faltered for even a second while their world seemed to be at peace.
