Shadowbound: The Awakened Fool

Chapter 19: Chapter 19 Wolves in the Arena Part 1

The arena was massive.

A perfect stone circle two hundred meters wide, carved with ancient containment runes, etched with glowing sigils at each cardinal point. The domed barrier above shimmered with reinforced mana, a sixth-layer ward woven with anti-collapse anchors. No less than ten Magisterium-level enchanters stood ready to reinforce the field.

Because what stood inside was more dangerous than anything they'd hosted in a century.

Ten prodigies.

Each a walking storm.

And in the center, the arena countdown ticked toward zero.

"FINAL TRIAL: RUMBLE OF THE TEN – COMMENCE"

Silence.

Then movement.

Freya was the first to shift, launching herself back from the center as fire curled around her like wings. A blast of violet-orange flame erupted beneath her boots as she soared up and then angled left, avoiding the initial clash entirely.

Dalron Vex, never subtle, slammed both fists into the ground. The arena cracked. Spikes of stone and metal erupted outward in all directions like war spears, catching several off guard. He drove straight toward Vellon Dae, who had just summoned a radiant solar barrier.

Sera Jinn unleashed her lion instantly, flames roaring outward in a spiraling inferno. She took no stance; she charged, fists glowing, colliding midair with a water mage who never saw it coming.

One down.

Theren Lucal, the Obscured Flame senior, stood perfectly still, his serpent aspect coiled behind him.

He watched.

Waiting.

Planning.

And Kairo Vale?

He walked.

Calmly.

The moment the duel started, he turned his back to the center and walked to the edge of the ring, boots crunching softly against fractured stone and heat-scoured dust.

He passed through Dalron's quake wave without flinching, lightning flaring softly beneath his feet in rippling blue arcs that deflected debris automatically.

A fireblast arced toward him he lifted one hand.

Crack.

The bolt struck nothing.

Dissolved midair.

Refraction lightning. A defense technique so fast it activated before perception.

Sera blinked from across the field. "That wasn't a block…"

"It was a dismissal," murmured Elira, watching from above. Her grip on the rail tightened.

Cael Soren moved now.

No aspect.

No chant.

Just that unnatural, effortless stride.

He passed within five meters of Kairo, his gaze never shifting.

Kairo didn't look at him.

But in that moment, the static between them rose.

All around them, fighters collided.

Freya blasted Vellon off his feet with a spiral burst, a phoenix-wing trail burning behind her.

Dalron absorbed five spells to the chest and shattered the caster's staff in one hand.

Sera and Theren locked in a high-speed fist exchange—flame against wind, each movement shaking the air.

Three were down in three minutes.

Now it was seven.

Cael stopped walking.

And raised his hand toward Kairo.

Not a spell. Not a threat.

An invitation.

The crowd stilled.

Kairo sighed softly.

"Fine," he muttered.

Lightning gathered at his back. The koi appeared flickering, watching.

Then

Boom.

Cael vanished.

No flash. No chant. No warning.

He reappeared beside Kairo, his palm already at the level of Kairo's ribs.

Displacement attack.

Kairo caught the strike mid-air.

A shockwave erupted.

Cracks spidered across the arena beneath their feet.

Lightning and pure force collided in the space of a breath, then detonated into a burst of blue static and gray energy.

They both jumped back.

No injuries.

No hits landed.

But the message was clear.

Cael wanted the wolves.

And Kairo wasn't giving them yet.

In the skybox, one of the Magisterium agents muttered, "We underestimated both of them."

Another whispered, "Their rhythms are… not human."

Back in the arena, Kairo adjusted his stance slightly.

His right palm crackled with layered current, his multi-phase circuit spell activating for the first time in public view.

He vanished.

Not a lightning flash but a folded bolt, looping mid-air in two curves before redirecting toward Cael's flank.

Cael twisted his hand a spatial fold countered it, but the timing was off.

Kairo appeared at Cael's left, knee striking into ribs.

Contact.

The first hit landed.

Cael's body jolted, but he rolled, sliding back in perfect form.

He smiled for the first time.

Kairo raised one brow.

Cael's voice was soft.

"How long until you show me?"

Kairo tilted his head.

"When you make me bleed."

Above, Elira turned to one of the healers nearby.

"Prepare Tier-Four containment. His mana pressure is building."

"You think his second aspect?"

"It's trying to wake up," she said. "I can feel it from here."
