shadows of the moon

Chapter 18: Chapter 8: Unforgettable

The morning light softly filtered through the trees as we stepped away from the house. The air smelled fresh like rain had just passed. I turned around, looking at the house. I knew now we wouldn't be safe anymore but we would be in more danger than ever. Orion led the way, his steps sure and steady Leo walked beside me still having no idea what he did while Mimic's mark was on him and I wanted to keep it that way, I had to keep it that way to protect Leo from the truth. Orion was scanning the woods for any sign of danger. I kept my hand close to the mark on my side which had stopped glowing but I still felt it, as if the mark was alive. Its warmth was pulsing gently beneath my skin. "Alright, let's go." Orion said, waving his hand. It was morning already, I was already starting to feel weaker. The moon had healed me, yes, but it was also making my powers stronger. Without the moon, I'd be weaker. After a little while of walking, I finally asked. "Orion, where are we going?" He turned around to look at me. I felt a wave of emotions coming off of Orion. It was a combination of sadness, anger, but also happiness. "Some place you were always meant to go." He continued walking. Leo shrugged, also wondering what he meant. I whispered to Leo. "Orion feels sad, angry, but also happy. It's a super odd combination, Leo. Where do you think he's taking us?" I asked. "Luna, I honestly have no idea." And that wasn't very reassuring.

As we walked, we saw a bridge coming up ahead and we decided to take a rest. We walked onto the bridge and stood there. I looked at Leo who was resting comfortably on the bridge across from me and Orion looked like he was busy in thought. I was admiring the beauty of the waters. The sun beamed onto the waters making the lake glimmer and shine which was beautiful. I looked into the lake and saw fish swimming. Odd thing was, I could feel the emotions of all the fish and it was so calming they were all so happy to be swimming they were whole. I closed my eyes taking in all the emotions that they were feeling. Orion then asked, "you can feel them can't you? You can feel their emotions." I opened my eyes. "Yes I can feel them all its so calming." He went to stand next to me. "You're getting better at using your powers." I smiled. "Orion, can I ask you something?" I asked. "Ask away." He responded. "Who was that woman? I saw a vision of your memory it was odd it vanished so quickly." He titled his head. "What woman?" He asked. "I don't know i've never seen her before but she was in your memory and you looked so happy together." Orion looked super confused like he had no idea what I was talking about. "You were in a field sitting on the floor. You were with a woman and you were laughing. You have no idea what i'm talking about?" He scratched his head. "No idea." Before I could say anything else, Leo looked down at the river. He smirked. "Leo?" I asked. He winked. "Watch this." He jumped into the water and turned into a shark. Then, he leaped over the bridge as a shark turning back into a human over the bridge. I raised an eyebrow. "Leo that was totally unnecessary." He shrugged. "Gotta use my powers somehow right?" I rolled my eyes jokingly. "It seems like you've both mastered your powers havent you?" Orion responded. I giggled bumping into Orion then another flash of memory came up.

This time, it was more clear. The world quickly faded away and I was inside of his memory. I saw Orion fighting some people glancing over at two babies who were completely oblivious. "You will never win!" Orion yelled. A woman then came out. "We will never stop until the last of that filthy bloodline is gone!" The woman had dark eyes and long brown hair. She had a strong spanish accent. Before Orion could respond I was snapped back onto the bridge with Leo screaming my name "LUNA!" he yelled. I was leaning on the bridge. Orion and Leo both looked concerned. "I guess you haven't mastered all your powers yet." Orion said arms crossed. Not that he was angry but more concerned. "What did you see?" Leo asked. "There was a lot of death and blood. Orion was fighting these people protecting two babies." I said. "That was the day all hell broke loose." Orion said calmly. "What do you mean?" Leo asked. "Do you remember how I told you your mother died? That was the day it happened. Solara has been trying to eliminate your bloodline and she almost succeeded." He said. "How did we end up in the orphanage?" I asked. "While I was fighting somebody took you I still don't know who but I guess they didn't want you dead so they brought you to an orphanage." Orion said. We were quiet for a moment. I was still processing Orion's memory. "Let's keep going." So the three of us continued walking. "Do you think I hit a nerve?" I asked Leo.

"I'm not sure. All of this is really confusing. Why couldn't Orion remember the memory you saw." I looked up ahead of me watching Orion walk deep in thought. "I have no idea." After a while, he turned back. "We're almost there." He said looking back up ahead. I felt another whiff of his emotions; there was nothing else but sadness and pain. We continued walking "Orion, where are we going?" I asked. "You'll find out soon enough." He responded. After a couple more hours and by now it was night. I stopped looking at the Moon allowing its energy to fill me up which felt amazing. Leo saw I stopped and did the same thing. The moon's energy made me feel alive! Then we continued to walk. Eventually, Orion stopped. "We're here." He said. We started to walk. It was a field. As Leo and I walked, there were flowers blooming all around us, I could feel them responding to me. In the center of this field was an ancient moss covered stone half sunken into the earth weathered and untouched by time. This place felt familiar like I had been here before but I was sure I hadn't. Time felt suspended here like the world had paused to remember. "Orion what is this place?" I asked. "This is the moonlit field. This was the place your mother would come when she needed to get away from the world."

Leo and I looked around and it was beautiful. "As you've probably noticed by now the field responds to you, lunar blood. You two now own this field since you're the very last Moonlights. I thought you might like to see it." Orion said. "It's beautiful Orion, thank you." Even though I could feel he was happy something still felt off like there was apart of him that didn't understand why he took us here. I ignored it walking up to the statue. "What's this?" I asked. "That…" He walked up to the statue "it's uh." He slowly put his hand onto the statue until it touched. "I'm unsure. Something old maybe forgotten." He put his hand down shaking off the sense of De Ja Vu. "You guys can come here whenever you'd like. I'll leave you too it." He started to leave. "Orion, wait!" He turned around. "As much as it's ours it's yours too you're apart of this family Orion whether you like it or not." Leo said. He turned around. "You've really come a long way Leo." He started walking back. "I manage." Leo said. Looking around at Orion and Leo, they looked so happy and felt that way too. Maybe just for a moment nothing bad would happen, everything would be perfect. In this moment, this place, this memory would be truly unforgettable.
