Shinigami: Medicine Can't Save The Soul Reaper Society

Chapter 244: Chapter 245: Charitable Medical Loan

Just as Ayasegawa revealed an expression of excitement and guilt, Risa stepped forward to block Makoto, firmly stating,

"Makoto-kun, no. This is absolutely not going to work. Captain Unohana will reprimand you—perhaps even punish you."

"That's right, Vice-Captain Senju," Isane chimed in weakly. "This treatment costs more massively. It's completely out of the question..."

"No matter what, we have to try. Even reducing part of the cost would be worth it," Makoto replied resolutely.

Risa, however, showed no signs of backing down. On the contrary, she grew increasingly anxious.

"Makoto-kun, have you forgotten? Just a few days ago, you were harshly scolded by Captain Unohana for performing large-scale healing in the Eleventh Division without permission. If you bring this up now, she'll only become angrier."

"Exactly! Vice-Captain Senju, you were practically thrown out of Captain Unohana's quarters, covered in blood..." Isane added, her tone both worried and hesitant.

"It's fine. After all, I am still her disciple," Makoto reassured them, his calm voice unshaken.

As the three exchanged words, Ayasegawa's guilt deepened.

I'm so despicable!

How could I make such a shameless request, putting Makoto-kun at risk just to secure a reduction in the treatment bill?

Yet, his feelings of responsibility and loyalty towards the Eleventh Division forced Ayasegawa to pin his hopes on Makoto.

As Ayasegawa grappled with his inner torment, Risa suddenly said,

"Makoto-kun, if you really want to help the Eleventh Division, why not use the 'medical loan' idea you suggested earlier? That way, they can pay in installments."

Ayasegawa's ears perked up at a specific phrase. "Medical loan?!"

Risa shot him a disapproving glance but went on to explain.

"Yes, it's an idea Makoto-kun proposed to help lower-ranking nobles who are struggling financially. The principle is simple: treat first, pay later. Patients can pay their medical bills in installments over a longer period."

Risa then elaborated on how the "medical loan" worked.

Since nobles are recognized for owning territories in the Soul Society, they could mortgage their lands and promise to pay back treatment costs in small monthly installments over ten, twenty, or even thirty years.

To cover the short-term financial strain on the Fourth Division, a small interest rate of 5.65% annually would be added to the payments.

Hearing this, Ayasegawa's eyes lit up.

Though his math wasn't great, he could grasp the basics. The Fourth Division was willing to delay payments for decades, charging only a 5.65% annual interest rate. This was practically charity!

Risa even gave a recent example:

A lower-ranking noble who owed 300,000 in medical bills could use the "medical loan" system and only needed to pay a little over 1,000 per month.

Yumichika's excitement was palpable.

"300,000? Only 1,000 per month?! This is perfect, Makoto-kun! I want the Eleventh Division to adopt this medical loan system!"

Makoto hesitated. "Yumichika, this loan system is still in its early stages. There might be flaws or issues we haven't accounted for yet. Perhaps we should—"

"No!" Ayasegawa interrupted, his determination unwavering.

"Rather than trouble you to plead with Captain Unohana, it's better to gradually repay the Eleventh Division's medical bill this way."

Turning to Risa, he asked, "Risa, could you calculate how much the Eleventh Division would need to repay each month under this plan?"

Risa, ever professional, responded promptly.

"The repayment period can vary. Typically, it's divided into ten, twenty, thirty, fifty, or even a hundred years. Which term would you prefer?"

Ayasegawa pondered for a moment. For Shinigami, who lived exceptionally long lives, a hundred years wasn't unreasonable.

Still, he asked tentatively, "How much would it be for thirty years?"

"Hold on..."

Risa pulled out a pen and notebook, scribbling furiously for a moment before looking up with the answer.

"It's not much. Just under 800,000 per month—exactly 777,478.89."

"Seven hundred seventy-seven thousand?!" Ayasegawa's eyes sparkled with delight.

For an individual Shinigami, that sum was astronomical.

However, for the Eleventh Division's operating budget, it was manageable—challenging, yes, but far better than a one-time payment of over a milion.

Without hesitation, Ayasegawa declared his intent to proceed with the medical loan. He quickly signed the contract with Risa on behalf of the Eleventh Division, offering the division's barracks and land as collateral.

"Makoto-kun, thank you so much! Without your 'medical loan,' the Eleventh Division's budget would have completely collapsed," Ayasegawa said, gripping Makoto's hand in gratitude.

Makoto, burdened by guilt, avoided Ayasegawa's gaze.

1,346,900,000 in loans, with an annual interest of 5.65%...

Even without the principal, the Eleventh Division will pay over 1.45 billion in interest alone.

I'm terrible… Makoto silently berated himself.

But for Captain Unohana to enjoy flowers year-round, and for the Fourth Division to thrive with ample funds…

The Eleventh Division will just have to endure. After all, those musclebound warriors could use some financial pressure to toughen them up.
