Shinobi Leveling: Rise of the Shadow Hunter

Chapter 1: The Forgotten Genin

Ryu Kamado knelt on the cracked dirt path, gasping for breath. Sweat dripped from his brow, stinging his eyes as his trembling arms struggled to hold him up. The oppressive afternoon heat bore down on his back, but that was the least of his concerns. Around him, the field was littered with kunai embedded in the ground, each marking a missed target.

"Again, Kamado!" barked Captain Asano, a burly Chūnin with scars crisscrossing his forearms. "You're moving like a civilian! A stiff breeze could take you out."

The other Genin of Team Nine, Haru and Mei, snickered from the sidelines. Haru leaned casually against a tree, his hands in his pockets, while Mei twirled a kunai between her fingers, her expression bored.

Ryu clenched his fists, forcing himself to stand despite the burning ache in his legs. He knew the truth—he was the weakest member of his team, the laughingstock of their peers. Even the Academy instructors had barely passed him, citing his below-average chakra reserves and poor control. He was an orphan with no prestigious clan to back him, no bloodline abilities, and no natural talent. Just a nobody trying to survive in a world where strength was everything.

"I'll get it this time," Ryu muttered under his breath, more to himself than to his captain.

Captain Asano scoffed. "You've got five minutes to hit three moving targets. If you can't manage that, don't bother showing up to the next mission."

The targets—wooden dummies mounted on rotating platforms—sprang to life, spinning and weaving unpredictably across the training field. Ryu gritted his teeth and focused, channeling what little chakra he could muster into his legs. He dashed forward, his movements clumsy but determined.

The first kunai slipped from his sweaty grip, missing the target by a wide margin. He cursed under his breath but pressed on, weaving between the moving dummies. His heart pounded in his chest as he lined up his next throw. This time, the kunai nicked the edge of the target—a small victory, but a victory nonetheless.

"Pathetic," Haru called out, his voice dripping with disdain. "Maybe you should just stick to delivering groceries, Kamado."

Ryu's vision blurred with frustration and exhaustion. He knew Haru was right. No one expected anything from him, not even himself. But somewhere deep inside, a stubborn spark refused to be snuffed out. He had to prove them wrong. He had to.

As he lined up his final throw, time seemed to slow. The world faded away, leaving only the target and the kunai in his hand. He took a deep breath, steadying his trembling arm.

Thwack! The kunai embedded itself dead center in the target.

Silence fell over the training field. Even Captain Asano seemed momentarily taken aback.

"Hmph," Asano grunted, masking his surprise. "Took you long enough."

Ryu's chest heaved as he stood there, his legs threatening to give out. Haru and Mei exchanged glances, their smug expressions faltering.

"Lucky shot," Mei muttered.

Captain Asano waved dismissively. "That's enough for today. Haru, Mei, you're dismissed. Kamado, stay behind."

Ryu swallowed hard, dread pooling in his stomach. This was it—he was going to be kicked off the team for good.

Once the others had left, Asano crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. "You've got heart, Kamado, I'll give you that. But heart won't keep you alive on the battlefield. You need power."

Ryu looked down at his scuffed sandals, shame creeping up his spine. "I know."

Asano sighed. "Look, I'm not here to crush your dreams. But the way you are now? You'll die the first time you face a real enemy. Find a way to get stronger, or quit before you get yourself and your teammates killed."

The words stung, but Ryu knew they were true. He bowed stiffly. "Thank you, Captain."

Asano nodded and walked away, leaving Ryu alone on the training field.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the village. Ryu trudged toward the outskirts of Konoha, his body aching with every step. The villagers paid him no mind as he passed—just another forgettable face in a village filled with legends.

He found himself at the edge of the forest, where the air was cooler and the sounds of the village faded into the distance. Collapsing onto a patch of grass, he stared up at the darkening sky.

Why am I even trying? he thought bitterly. I'll never be like Naruto, Sasuke, or any of the other great shinobi. I'm just wasting my time.

As if in response to his despair, a faint glow caught his attention. A strange, ethereal light pulsed from within the trees. Curiosity tugged at him, and despite his exhaustion, he pushed himself to his feet and followed the light.

The glow led him to a hidden clearing, where an ancient stone altar stood covered in moss and vines. Runes etched into the stone glowed with a mysterious blue light.

"What is this?" Ryu whispered, his heart racing.

As he approached the altar, the runes flared brighter, and a sudden surge of energy swept through the clearing. Ryu stumbled back, shielding his eyes.

A voice, deep and resonant, echoed in his mind. Do you seek power, mortal?

Ryu's breath caught in his throat. Was he hallucinating from exhaustion?

Answer, and the path shall be revealed.

His fists clenched. He thought of Haru's mocking laughter, Mei's disdainful gaze, and Captain Asano's harsh words. But most of all, he thought of his own helplessness.

"Yes," he said, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at his gut. "I want power."

The light intensified, enveloping him completely. Ryu felt a searing heat course through his veins, followed by an overwhelming surge of energy.

The Chakra Leveling System has been activated.

A translucent interface appeared before his eyes, filled with unfamiliar symbols and numbers.

Ryu's eyes widened in disbelief. Was this real? A system, like something out of a fantasy tale?

He reached out and selected the first quest.
