Shinobi Leveling: Rise of the Shadow Hunter

Chapter 5: First real fight

For the first time, he felt a spark of hope. Perhaps he wasn't useless after all. He scanned the battlefield, searching for his next target. The bandits were spreading out, trying to flank the merchants. One of them approached, a sneer twisting his lips as he raised his sword.

Ryu took a deep breath, his fingers clenching into fists. He couldn't let doubt cloud his mind now. The merchants were depending on him. With renewed determination, he shifted his stance, readying himself for the incoming attack.

The bandit lunged forward, swinging his sword in a wide arc. Ryu ducked just in time, feeling the blade slice through the air above his head. Without hesitation, he retaliated, stepping in and driving his palm into the man's stomach, channeling his chakra into the strike. The bandit staggered, his breath hitching as the force sent him reeling backward.

Before Ryu could press the attack, another bandit rushed him from the side. He barely managed to spin out of the way, the edge of a dagger grazing his arm. Pain flared, but he gritted his teeth and kept moving. He couldn't afford to stop.

Mei and Haru were still locked in their own battles, their techniques devastating but not enough to completely overwhelm the enemy. Ryu needed to push himself harder. His teammates were strong, but they couldn't fight alone.

He exhaled sharply, forcing himself to think. He had trained for this. His skills weren't the same as Mei's precise jutsu or Haru's raw strength, but he had his own way of fighting. He just had to trust himself.

He reached into his pouch, grasping a smoke bomb. With a quick flick of his wrist, he threw it to the ground, the explosion of thick, dark fog instantly covering his movements. The bandits coughed and cursed, momentarily blinded.

Taking advantage of the confusion, Ryu weaved through the chaos, striking with calculated precision. A sharp jab to the ribs here, a sweep to the legs there. He moved like a shadow, never staying in one place for too long. For the first time in the fight, the tide seemed to shift in their favor.

Captain Asano's voice rang out over the battlefield, commanding and fierce. "Keep pushing! Don't give them time to regroup!"

Ryu spotted a bandit attempting to circle around to one of the wagons. Not on my watch. He sprinted forward, leaping onto the cart for better positioning. The bandit barely had time to react before Ryu launched himself at him, delivering a swift kick to his chest. The impact sent the man sprawling onto the dirt, unconscious.

The merchants, still cowering behind the wagons, looked at Ryu with a mix of fear and hope. "Stay down and stay quiet!" he instructed firmly, scanning the battlefield once more.

The fight wasn't over yet, but something had changed. Ryu no longer felt like dead weight. He was fighting, contributing, standing alongside his team.

And for the first time, he believed in himself.

He felt a strange tingling in his fingertips, and without warning, a plume of blue fire shot from his hand, a fierce flame unlike any jutsu he had ever seen. The bandit, Rin Okumura, took a step back in surprise, her single visible eye narrowing in intrigue. The flames danced in the air, a mesmerizing sight that seemed to defy the very fabric of the world around them.

But Rin was not one to be easily intimidated. With a flick of her wrist, she brought her sword up to meet the fire, and the two elements clashed with a sound like a thunderclap. The flames roared and spat, but her blade remained unmarred, a bastion of steel against the inferno. She twirled the weapon with an ease that spoke of years of practice, each movement precise and calculated.

"A pretty trick, but it'll take more than a light show to end me," she called out, her voice a mix of amusement and challenge. Her words sent a ripple of doubt through Ryu, but he knew he had to keep pushing. This was his chance to show the world, and himself, that he was no longer the weak link.

But as the flames flickered and died, he felt the weight of his chakra depleting rapidly. His body was drained from the night's battles, and the exertion of the day's fight was taking its toll. He could feel the exhaustion creeping in, his limbs growing heavy, his vision blurring at the edges. He had to retreat, to recover, to learn from this encounter.

As if reading his mind, Haru called out from the smoke, "It's too soon to show your hand, Ryu! Fall back! I've got this."

Ryu didn't need to be told twice. He took a step back, his legs wobbly beneath him, watching as Haru stepped forward with a smug grin. The burly Genin had been eyeing the fight with Rin, eager to prove himself. His chakra surged, and his bone-chakra fists grew larger, a clear indication that he wasn't holding back.

The scar-faced bandit took one look at the new threat and bolted, leaving his comrades to face Team Nine alone. The remaining bandits circled, their eyes flicking from Mei's earth spikes to Haru's menacing form, and finally to the exhausted yet determined Ryu.

"Let's finish this," Mei growled, her hands glowing with freshly molded chakra.
