Chapter 274: Section 273 - Cornered Beast
```
After a night had passed, the first thing Chen Fei did upon waking up was to check on the Shadow Wolf that was locked in the special cage.
Wild and unrestrained howls emanated from inside the cage.
Great! This creature finally survived the night.
He was only worried that this Shadow Wolf would be like a sparrow with a temper so big that, even without illness or injury, provided with food and water, it would still die of confinement in one night.
Teacher Shen Fei's black hound Ah Mao had met its end at the paws of a wolf pack. Had Chen Fei not been in need of a new guard dog, he would have killed this evil wolf long ago and be done with it. Why bother with a second try? Since the Wolf King had repaid with its life, it was a cycle of karma; retribution had come swiftly and justly!
Opening the cage, the Shadow Wolf once again began to wriggle restlessly, its fur emitting a faint black mist as it tried to escape by shadow transformation on the spot. However, it was foiled as Little Bird approached closely and flashed a light, forcing it back into its original form, leaving it motionless.
Both were of the Third Rank Human Order, and it was daytime with the sun warming the room and the lights shining brightly; truly not the home turf where this Dark Monster could harness its natural talents.
Chen Fei didn't care, though. He threw two pieces of frozen-solid chicken breast into the cage, poured a bowl of milk, and then closed the cage again, ensuring the Shadow Wolf couldn't escape even if it grew wings.
He had to work during the day and had no time to deal with it. He'd handle it properly after getting off work in the evening.
"Aoow!"
In broad daylight, the small western-style building echoed with the howl of a wolf, each cry more sorrowful than the last.
Chen Fei, annoyed by the sounds, fetched his laptop, set the volume to maximum, played the divine song "Restless" on a single loop, then waved goodbye!
The wolf howling faced the aunt wielding a knife. The bittersweet feeling of that encounter, Chen Fei could not fathom.
When he returned from work, the Shadow Wolf in the cage was panting with its tongue out, looking utterly desolate, as the frozen-solid chicken breast had vanished without a trace, and the milk in the bowl was also gone. Whether it was from hunger or the bombing by the divine song, at that moment, it didn't even have the strength to talk back.
As long as the power was sufficient, the laptop could continue looping energetically without interruption.
For the Shadow Wolf to outlast it in endurance, based on just the energy of two pieces of chicken breast, was simply wishful thinking.
"From today on, I'll give you a name, 'Ah Mao'!"
Turning off the still roaring laptop, Chen Fei picked up another piece of chicken breast and dangled it in front of the Shadow Wolf.
His math was solid. The previous Ah Mao was gone, so now the new Ah Mao would take its place. Seamless transition; they were all canines, so there really was nothing wrong with it.
The Shadow Wolf stayed silent but stared intently at the chicken breast in Chen Fei's hand, involuntarily licking its tongue.
After listening to "Restless" all day, its body and spirit were wounded. It needed ample nutrition to recover.
"Come on, bark 'woof,' 'Ah Mao'!"
Chen Fei pinched the chicken breast, swaying it left and right in front of the Shadow Wolf.
Shadow Wolf: "..."
"Chirp!"
Pure Light Sparrow Xiao Jiu flew onto Chen Fei's hand, lowered its head to peck at the chicken breast, causing bits of frozen ice to fly around without making a dent.
Shaking its little head, it gave up entirely, as sweet-tasting grain feed and fresh mealworms were much more delicious.
"Want to eat?"
Chen Fei kept on swaying the chicken breast, a prime source of protein, the authentic taste of chicken.
The Shadow Wolf snarled and roared, as if saying a wolf could be killed but not humiliated.
"Then starve!"
Chen Fei wouldn't indulge the other party and immediately threw the chicken breast back into the refrigerator to keep freezing.
The Shadow Wolf licked its lips and continued to stare fiercely at Chen Fei.
The total calories provided by two pieces of chicken breast and a bowl of milk were naturally far from enough for a Third Rank Magical Beast Shadow Wolf, especially when it also had to withstand the devil's ear-piercing sound of "Restless."
The standoff between man and Shadow Wolf continued, neither willing to submit to the other.
In just a short span of five or six days, although the injuries of the Shadow Wolf were no longer of any major concern, it unavoidably grew thinner.
Chen Fei had given his original dormitory to the Golden-Eyed Azure-Hearted Civet Er Lang as a cozy nest, which it was quite satisfied with.
Today, as usual, it came to visit, seeking some wine to drink. It saw the half-dead Shadow Wolf in the cage and couldn't help saying, "Still not tamed? I knew it would be this way, give up! Grant it a swift end!"
To tame a wild Magical Beast, Er Lang, being a Magical Beast himself, naturally understood the difficulty involved.
"I'd like to try it a bit longer!"
Chen Fei, already engaged in a battle of wills with the Shadow Wolf, naturally was unwilling to give up.
"Suit yourself! Let's change things up today, oh, apple cider, this has potential."
Er Lang, familiar with the routine, began to rummage through Chen Fei's private wine cabinet.
The fine wines from Boss Hana were too expensive and in limited supply, not to mention open for drinking, but the fruit wines and rice wines brewed by Chen Fei himself had no such constraints. Blowing directly into the bottle provided extreme pleasure.
After all, because of the low alcohol content, fruit wine had a short shelf life. If it wasn't consumed promptly, it would quickly sour and become unpleasant to drink.
"Do you have any good suggestions?"
Chen Fei also took out a bottle of peach blossom wine from his cabinet, brewed with peach flesh.
Of course, it needed sugar.
Without sugar, the final brewing would be dreadful, resulting in a murky, thick mash instead of what's modernly considered as wine.
"Hmm! There are two methods you could try, but I can't guarantee they'll work," Er Lang said as he grabbed a wine bottle and poured wine into two bowls, large and small.
Just as he finished pouring, Xiao Jiu flew over, claimed the small bowl, and chirped cheerfully, utterly ecstatic.
```
Big Cat was right; it's rare for a Magical Beast not to fancy a drink.
Xiao Jiu liked to drink, and Chen Fei had no choice but to tolerate it. Fortunately, the undistilled fruit wine had a relatively low alcohol content, so a small amount wouldn't matter much. He turned a blind eye, pretending he hadn't seen a thing.
The Shadow Wolf caged within the box continued to sniff the air and lick its lips, clearly smelling the strong scent of alcohol permeating the space.
"Speak up!"
Chen Fei was indeed a bit worried that the Shadow Wolf locked in the cage might eventually weaken and die.
This was the first time he'd seen a Magical Beast that absolutely refused to submit.
"First, use emotions to move it. Soothe it, and it's best if you've saved its life before. Plus, it has to be a 'Smooth-Coated Donkey' that can't be coerced by force."
Golden-Eyed Azure-Hearted Civet glanced at the Shadow Wolf that was still locked in the cage.
Appeasement probably wouldn't work on this wild and untamed Magical Beast.
"Second, conquer it with force. Beat it or endure until it completely loses all confidence to resist. Hmm, you can try a Cornered Beast's Struggle. If once isn't enough, then twice, three times, beat it until it dares not show its ferocity."
Er Lang laughed as if enjoying others' misfortune.
The Shadow Wolf wasn't his kind, Golden-Eyed Azure-Hearted Civet, after all. 'Better him than me,' he thought, treating it as a bit of fun.
Perhaps hearing the Golden-Eyed Azure-Hearted Civet's words, the Shadow Wolf caged within narrowed its eyes at him, emitting a low growl from the depths of its throat.
"Hmm?"
A mere Third Rank little wolf dares to bare its teeth? The Golden-Eyed Azure-Hearted Civet's eyes slightly opened, as it sent a burst of invisible, intangible spiritual power crashing forward like a tidal wave. Read new adventures at empire
"Awoo!~"
The Shadow Wolf let out a feeble wail.
Facing the oppressive force from a Seventh Rank, no matter how high its spirit, it was still too much to bear.
"Actually a good idea!"
Chen Fei ignored Er Lang bullying the pitiful Shadow Wolf. He stroked his chin, tapping his fingers on the table as he pondered the two suggestions.
Three days later, the Shadow Wolf, whose fur had regained some of its sheen after being fed chicken breast, assorted offal, and milk, was brought into a standard shipping container. The door was then shut tightly so that not even a fly could escape, while Xiao Jiu circled outside on guard.
Inside the container, there was only one battery-operated lamp, providing a weak light.
Upon opening the special cage, Chen Fei stepped back a few paces, hands clenched into fists.
"Come out, let's duel!"
No sooner had he spoken than the Shadow Wolf, confined in the cage for so long, burst forth in a cloud of dark mist. It disappeared in the blink of an eye, blending into the dimly lit interior of the shipping container.
Here, shadows were almost everywhere.
"Awoo!"
With a fierce roar full of loathing for Chen Fei, the Shadow Wolf unreservedly appeared behind him, its fangs lunging towards his neck.
Clack!~
The wolf's teeth clamped firmly onto steel. The thickness of the armor even exceeded the length of the canines, which meant that even if the teeth punctured the outer layer of armor, they couldn't hurt Chen Fei, who had initiated "Personal Armor (Light Armor Mode)."
Chen Fei let the Shadow Wolf viciously continue to tear and bite, but as if it were nothing, he simply pulled it off himself, then casually tossed it aside!
Bang!~
A shallow outline of the wolf appeared on the steel wall of the container.
Shaking his head nonchalantly, Chen Fei taunted, "It's useless. Come on, keep going, do it!"
The limited space inside the container constrained the Shadow Wolf's advantages.
He had chosen Big Cat's advice and set up an enclosed space relatively advantageous for the Shadow Wolf.
But this "advantageous" situation was a deceptive one.
As long as the Shadow Wolf couldn't break Chen Fei's defenses, it could not escape being toyed within his grasp.
The struggle of the Cornered Beast went on for three whole days, the Shadow Wolf ending up exhausted every time, collapsing into a heap, as if dead, allowing Chen Fei to effortlessly pick it up and throw it back into the special cage.
Once it had been well-fed and had regained its vitality and spirit, it would be thrown back into the makeshift Beast-fighting Arena of the standard container.
…
This time, the Shadow Wolf uttered mournful, fearful whimpers, abandoning its Shadow Transformation and choosing to give in.
A duel without any hope of victory had shattered its confidence and pride. From that moment on, the duels had lost their meaning.
"Do you want to continue?"
Even though weighed down by heavy armor, Chen Fei crouched effortlessly, reaching out to touch the Shadow Wolf's head.
A pat on the head is a gesture with profound significance; for dogs and cats, it represents a claim of hierarchical dominance.
Any creature with a shred of resistance wouldn't let its head be touched.
Chen Fei's hand stopped three inches from the Shadow Wolf's head and held still, no longer advancing.
He locked gazes with the Dark Monster, its green eyes unusually quiet.
Then, in the next moment, the wolf's head voluntarily pressed into Chen Fei's palm.
