Chapter 109: Chapter 109: Dragon Eggs, Can They Be Eaten?
In Volantis, one of the Triarch, Dofas Pennymion of the Elephant Party, had already returned to his palace. In his study, his staff had gathered many scrolls, all containing intelligence about Wright Baratheon, Storm's End, and the Seven Kingdoms. Soon after, another member of the Elephant Party, Naisso Visama, arrived.
"Dofas, are you sure Wright can do what he promised?" Naisso asked.
"Naisso, although we don't always see eye to eye, we're both from the Elephant Party. This time, for Volantis's sake, we must come to an agreement first, then go convince the other Triarchs," Dofas replied.
"You still haven't answered my question!" Naisso pointed at the scrolls on the table. "Clerk, tell us — can Wright deliver on his promises?"
The clerk stepped forward. "Honorable Triarchs, based on intelligence, it's well known that Robert is the king, Stannis commands the royal fleet as the Master of Ships, and Renly serves as the Master of Law. The Tyrells, who are relatives of Renly, hold the Treasury. As for Wright, he has altered the tradition of the Seven Kingdoms that has lasted for three hundred years, creating a new position, the Archmage. The Baratheon brothers are now unusually united, holding firm control over the kingdom's power."
The two Triarchs pondered the situation, considering the potential benefits of dispatching a fleet to delay Lys' fleet, as Wright suggested. The clerk continued, "Wright's personal strength has been corroborated by various intelligence reports. Currently, only a large cavalry corps could stand against him one-on-one. His twin brother, Renly, is also a mage, but reports indicate his strength is not as great as Wright's."
Dofas looked at Naisso. "If he alone can match a cavalry unit, then he certainly has enough influence in the Seven Kingdoms' council. His promises should be reliable."
Naisso asked, "Can you guarantee that, after the Seven Kingdoms conquer the Stone Step Isles, they won't turn against us? The Baratheon wipe out the last Dragonrider family!"
Dofas replied, "That's why we'll only send troops to delay Lys. We won't engage in battle. Our focus is on land conquest. We'll let Lys keep troubling the Seven Kingdoms with their fleet while we conquer the mainland."
Naisso was more focused on the war and the conquest of disputed lands. After considering it for a moment, he agreed. "I agree with your view. We'll pressure the other Triarchs into agreeing." Naisso stood and raised his hand. "For the glory of Volantis!"
Dofas also stood, raising his hand. "For the glory of Volantis! Naisso, this is the magical potion Wright created, called "Mighty". Make sure to find a few female slaves tonight. Remember, only drink one bottle!" Dofas smiled as he took out two small glass vials containing blue liquid, handing them to Naisso with a mysterious air.
Naisso understood the implication the moment he heard "female slaves" and smiled broadly. He thanked Dofas with a grin. Dofas only shared part of the pact between the two sides — Volantis would delay Lys' fleet, and the Seven Kingdoms would acknowledge that the disputed land belonged to Volantis, with a future alliance after the Seven Kingdoms' victory. He kept the details of the trade agreement with Wright hidden, as Dofas intended to strike separate deals with Wright to secure enough leverage for his re-election.
Not long after, Wright arrived in Volantis. Dofas warmly greeted him, and Wright joined him for an extravagant banquet, enjoying many of the local specialties.
After finishing their main course and dessert, the slaves cleaned the table, and the two continued drinking and chatting. Dofas held his wine cup and waved to a nearby guard. The guard bowed and left.
"Wright, have you ever heard the story of Aerion Targaryen?" Dofas asked.
Wright thought for a moment. "The prince who drank wildfire and burned himself to death?"
"Hahahaha, yes, that's the one. He joined the Second Sons during his exile and was hired by the people of Lys to fight against us Volantis, though they lost," Dofas said, chuckling.
Wright recalled the information about Aerion Targaryen. He was the second brother of Aemon, the Black Castle Maester at the Wall, and a figure from the Black Fire Rebellion. Aegon had died in 232 AC after drinking wildfire. It had been nearly 70 years since his death. The Second Sons, Dofas mentioned, were a group Aerion had joined, though Oberyn Martell had once been a member but quit after the group's reputation declined.
What was Dofas getting at by bringing this up?
Wright responded, "The last heir of Housr Targaryen was recently executed by me."
Dofas froze. The Volantis nobles prided themselves on being of pure Valyrian blood, and the last male member of House Targaryen — former Dragonriders — had been killed by Wright, leaving these nobles with complex feelings. As long as the Targaryen existed, they could not claim to be the highest of nobility. By bloodline, they were mere subordinates, even servants of the Dragonriders. Now that the Dragon Kings were gone, they could finally lay claim to the highest noble status, but that came from the Targaryens end, and not merit. However, that was all in the past, and now they would focus on their own interests.
At this moment, the guard who had left earlier returned, holding a wooden box. Dofas gestured to Wright and the guard placed the box in front of him.
"What's this?" Wright asked, using his magic to scan the box, but nothing unusual registered. Judging by the size, it seemed to contain a human head.
"Can I open it?" Wright asked.
"Please feel free," Dofas replied.
There were no traps on the box. Wright removed the lid and inside was a dragon egg, its size roughly that of a human head, covered in scaly patterns. Wright held it up, puzzled, and looked at Dofas.
Dofas smiled. "This is a gift for King Robert, meant to solidify our relationship."
"A very precious gift," Wright replied.
"Wright, you made a full set of Valyrian steel armor and weapons for your wifes, which is invaluable. This dragon egg is just a small token whem compared," Dofas explained.
The scales on the dragon egg were silver and gold. Wright's hand glowed with white light as he used a mid-level transformation spell to detect any signs of life. The egg showed no reaction.
"This dragon egg has already fossilized," Wright said.
"Exactly. It's no big deal," Dofas said with a laugh. "It used to be valuable, but now it's just a fossil. We've tried every method but couldn't hatch it. Eating it seems a waste, so we've kept it as a decoration in my study."
"Thank you very much, Triarch Dofas. Is this dragon egg from Aerion Targaryen?" Wright asked.
"It is. My great-grandfather's army took it as a spoil of war when they fought the people of Lys. They didn't ask for it back, and by then, the Targaryen couldn't hatch dragons anymore," Dofas explained.
"Thank you very much, Triarch Dofas. I came here to finalize our agreement, and tonight I'll write to my brother Robert to confirm everything," Wright said.
Dofas raised his cup. "Once your kingdom wins the war, our family's glass products, along with silk and spices from the Jade Sea, will be supplied to you, Wright, at the best prices."
Wright raised his own cup. "These goods are exactly what the Seven Kingdoms need. We also have sugar, spices, and clocks — excellent items. Cheers!"
The two of them then went to the clerk's office, where Wright used his finger to write on parchment with a flash of magic. Dofas watched in awe.
The document was officially sent to King's Landing. Wright declined the offer to stay the night, despite Dofas preparing several female slaves for him. He was not interested.
After leaving the palace, Wright wandered the docks and, using a special mark, found one of Varys' little birds.
After reading the information from the Seven Kingdoms, Wright wrote a letter and handed it to a child, tossing him a silver coin for food and patting his head.
"Take this letter to Magister Meye of Myr," Wright instructed. The child nodded and hurried off with small steps.
Dofas had secretly given the dragon egg to ensure that Wright could get Robert to follow through with the agreement, thus proving that Wright's proposal would benefit Volantis. Wright had also planned his own move to sweeten the deal for Volantis, ensuring they would have to send troops. The Stepstone were dominated by three main powers: Tyrosh, Lys, and Myr. Originally, the Seven Kingdoms intended to deal with all three, but now Volantis would handle Lys, leaving the remaining two city-states doomed to defeat.
Wright's letter to Magister Meye contained a secret: Volantis would soon send troops to occupy the disputed territory. He also suggested reducing the naval forces and sending infantry and cavalry to confront Volantis on the land. The Magister had forty men, and regardless of whether he succeeded, the land had far more potential for profit than the sea. The goal was simply to shift their focus away from the sea and onto the land. Lys would not allow either side to benefit or for one to lose, so whenever there was movement in the disputed area, Lys would send troops. Volantis had the strongest military power in the region, and only when both land and sea were under threat would they be forced to pay attention and send their forces to confront the other parties.
The balance between Myr, Lys, and Volantis must be maintained to ensure no side became too powerful, and no alliances should form between them. This would allow the Seven Kingdoms to step in as mediators.
A week later, Wright returned to the excavation camp. After tossing the dragon egg into the bonfire, he went to bathe. Nymeria and Tyene saw Wright throw an egg into the fire.
"Wright, what did you throw in?" Nymeria asked.
"A dragon egg," Wright replied, scrubbing himself in the wooden tub as the two slave girls added more hot water nearby.
Nymeria picked up the spear "White Crow" that was placed beside her and poked at the dragon egg, making a clinking sound. They had heard rumors about dragon eggs, and since the great dragons had been extinct for over a century, the eggs were said to have fossilized and could no longer hatch.
"Dragon egg? Did you buy it? You weren't tricked, were you? This looks like a stone," Tyene said.
Wright paused, realizing the possibility. If dragon eggs were indeed fossilized, someone could easily sell a stone shaped like a dragon egg as a decoration. How could they tell the difference?
"It was a gift from Governor Dofas," Wright said. "It looks real, so I thought I'd try burning it in the fire to see if it does anything. Tonight, I'll use magic to check it. If that doesn't work, I'll crack it open and see what's inside. If it's edible, we'll eat it."
Tyene squatted beside the fire, hugging her knees. She found a stick and poked the egg, flipping it over to check.
