Chapter 3: Slam Dunk: Chapter 3 Ignited Desire
The gym was alive with energy as students filled the stands, excited to witness the basketball tryouts. Shohoku's basketball team was recruiting new talent, and the pressure was palpable. Kenji Akagi stood among the hopefuls, his calm demeanor masking the anticipation stirring within him.
Takenori Akagi, the team captain, scanned the crowd of candidates. His commanding presence and booming voice set the tone. "You're here because you think you're good enough to play for Shohoku. Prove it!"
The players were split into teams for a scrimmage, with Kenji placed on the second squad. Takenori's sharp gaze lingered on his younger brother, knowing full well that Kenji wasn't an ordinary freshman.
The Scrimmage Begins
The whistle blew, and the game commenced. Kenji started as a forward, immediately showing a natural understanding of court positioning. But as the ball was tipped off, he intentionally played conservatively, sticking to basic movements.
The first possession went to the opposing team. Their guard dribbled down the court, trying to set up a play. Kenji shadowed his man, staying just close enough to disrupt any passes but not showcasing his full defensive prowess.
On offense, Kenji passed the ball around without taking any shots, earning subtle glances from his brother.
"What's he doing?" Takenori muttered under his breath.
The Tension Rises
Midway through the first quarter, Kenji's team trailed by six points. Takenori called a timeout, his frustration evident.
"Kenji," he barked, "you're holding back. Don't think I can't see it."
Kenji avoided his brother's intense gaze.
"Get back out there and play like you mean it," Takenori growled.
As the game resumed, Kenji remained cautious, though his instincts screamed at him to unleash his full potential. The opposing team's center, a towering second-year, tried to intimidate him.
"You're just a freshman," the center sneered. "Stay out of the way."
Kenji smirked faintly but said nothing.
The Breaking Point
The game reached a critical moment. With only a few minutes left, Kenji's team was down by eight points. Takenori, watching from the sidelines, clenched his fists.
Finally, he could take no more. Standing up, he roared, his voice echoing through the gym.
"STOP HOLDING BACK! Embrace the power of your full expression! Don't be afraid to go full force!"
The gym fell silent, all eyes turning to Kenji. His teammates stared, puzzled, while the opposing players smirked, thinking Takenori had lost his temper.
But Kenji knew what his brother meant. The words hit him like a spark, igniting something deep within.
The Awakening
The opposing team attempted a fast break, their point guard rushing down the court. Kenji moved like lightning, his speed far surpassing anyone's expectations. Within moments, he intercepted the pass with an outstretched hand, pivoted mid-air, and landed gracefully.
Gasps filled the gym.
Kenji sprinted toward the hoop, weaving through defenders with impossibly quick crossovers. His dribbling was mesmerizing, the ball a blur as it danced between his hands.
"Is this for real?" one of the players whispered.
Reaching the free-throw line, Kenji took a single, powerful leap. His body seemed to defy gravity as he soared through the air, his waist level with the rim. With a thunderous force, he dunked the ball through the hoop.
The crowd erupted in cheers, but the noise was quickly replaced by stunned silence as the rim snapped under the impact, the backboard shattering into shards.
The Reactions
Takenori stood frozen, his usual stoic demeanor replaced by a mixture of awe and pride.
Haruko, watching from the stands, covered her mouth in disbelief. "Kenji…"
The opposing players were speechless, some looking at the broken rim as though it were a dream.
Kenji landed softly, breathing steadily. He glanced at his brother, who nodded approvingly.
Coach Anzai, who had been observing quietly from the corner, finally stood. Adjusting his glasses, he smiled knowingly. "So, this is the younger Akagi," he murmured. "Interesting."
The Aftermath
The gym buzzed with excitement as staff scrambled to assess the damage. Meanwhile, Kenji's teammates approached him cautiously, their earlier doubts replaced by admiration.
"That was insane!" one of them said.
Kenji shrugged, his expression calm. "I just did what I had to."
Takenori approached, placing a heavy hand on Kenji's shoulder. "You've been hiding this from me?"
Kenji met his brother's gaze, a small smile tugging at his lips. "I wasn't ready. But I am now."
Takenori grinned. "Good. Because Shohoku needs you."
Coach Anzai's Verdict
Later, as the gym emptied, Coach Anzai called Kenji over.
"You've got remarkable talent, young man," Anzai said. "But raw power isn't enough. Are you ready to commit to the discipline and teamwork required to truly shine?"
Kenji nodded without hesitation. "Yes, Coach."
Anzai's smile widened. "Then welcome to Shohoku's basketball team. Let's see how far you can go."
As Kenji walked home that evening, he felt a new sense of purpose. His secret was out, but this was just the beginning. The court was his stage, and he was ready to leave his mark.
