Chapter 2: "The Omen of the Abyss"
The portal twisted and convulsed, streaks of black and crimson slashing through the golden energy that shielded Kael and Lyria. The pressure of the dimensional void weighed down on them like the weight of a collapsing star. Lyria's fiery red hair whipped wildly in the chaos as she clutched her glowing sword, her face tense but unyielding. Kael tightened his hold around her waist, his jaw clenched as if his determination alone could keep them intact.
"How will we blend in among the humans?" Lyria's voice was taut, her words almost drowned by the roar of the portal.
Kael's gaze remained fixed on the growing light at the end of the vortex. "Surviving comes first. We'll figure out the rest later."
Just as the light seemed within reach, an eerie silence swept over them. A voice, soft and velvety yet soaked in icy malice, broke through the stillness, sending a shiver down their spines.
"Kael…" it whispered, savoring the name as if it were a delicacy. "You always return to me."
Lyria's eyes widened, her grip tightening on her sword as she scanned the void. Kael's face darkened, his instincts on edge. From the shadows of the vortex, a figure began to take shape—a woman, or something resembling one. Her skin was pale as snow, her hair flowing like liquid night, but her eyes… they were what paralyzed them. Crimson and black, swirling pools of blood and darkness, drawing them into an abyss of terror.
Kael's chest tightened, a strange sense of familiarity clawing at him. He felt an invisible thread pulling him toward her, binding them in ways he couldn't understand.
"I was the first to speak your name," she said, her lips curving into a smile that was equal parts alluring and menacing. "And all things return to their beginning. Did you really think you could escape?"
Kael's voice was low, almost a growl. "I don't even know who you are."
Her laughter echoed, a haunting melody that reverberated through the portal. "You don't have to know me. The truth doesn't care if you remember."
"Kael, focus!" Lyria's shout snapped him out of his trance.
In one swift motion, she raised her sword, which blazed with an otherworldly glow. Its light was a perfect fusion of her crimson hair and alabaster skin—a radiant blend of red and white that seemed to defy the surrounding darkness. With a cry, she unleashed a strike that ripped through the void, its brilliance cutting through the figure.
The Darkness shrieked, her form dissolving into a swirling mist as she was hurled out of the portal. But the effort left Lyria drained. Her body trembled as the glow of her sword dimmed.
Kael caught her before she could collapse, cradling her tightly. "Stay with me, Lyria," he murmured, his voice heavy with urgency. "We're almost there."
The portal spat them out with violent force, sending them hurtling toward Earth. The blue and green planet grew rapidly in size, the atmosphere igniting around them as they descended. To those watching from the ground, it appeared as though a meteor had streaked across the sky.
They crashed with a deafening roar, carving a massive crater into the Earth. Smoke and debris billowed into the air, drawing nearby humans who rushed to see what had fallen. Kael groaned as he pushed himself up, still holding Lyria in his arms. Her breathing was shallow but steady.
Before he could fully recover, a shadow loomed over him. Kael's eyes darted upward to see the towering figure of a crimson-winged creature. Its seven-meter frame radiated an ominous energy, and its glowing eyes burned with malice. It was both ethereal and monstrous, its presence enough to make the air feel heavier. Yet, to the humans gathering around the crater, the creature remained invisible.
Kael cursed under his breath. "As if things weren't complicated enough already."
The humans whispered among themselves, their curiosity mounting as they edged closer to the crater. Kael glanced at them, then at Lyria, and finally at the creature. He had no time to waste.
"I hope this still works," he muttered.
A blue flash enveloped Kael and Lyria, and in an instant, they vanished, leaving the onlookers staring at the empty crater in confusion. The tension lingered in the air as whispers spread among the crowd, speculation running wild.
Far away, in a secluded corner of Earth, Kael and Lyria reappeared. The wind rustled through the trees as Kael gently laid Lyria on the soft ground. His mind raced with questions, but one thought overshadowed the rest: the voice in the portal and the crimson-eyed creature. Whatever this was, it was far from over.
