Chapter 21: Jacob's Arc: Seven
Sous and Shadow sat outside in the hallway just outside the admissions office. Jacob eventually came out with a small smile upon his face. He gave Sous and Shadow a hug.
"So you got in?" Sous asked.
Jacob nodded his head.
"What are you going to focus on?" Shadow inquired. He stood up adjusting his gun belt.
Jacob shrugged. "I'm not sure, there's so much to learn and I never really learned any of this prior. There was never a need to." He was quiet for a moment. "I think…I think I want to become an oracle."
"I thought oracles were a woman thing," Sous exclaimed.
Shadow shrugged. "Anyone can be one but yes, it's true it's mostly a field dominated by the ladies."
"I want to be able to help people, be able to find people, see into the future of people to lead them on the right path."
Shadow stepped forward and placed his hand on Jacob's head. "You'll be protected at this school. Apex wouldn't be able to harm you here. Too many powerful magae are here." He looked at Jacob once more and backed away allowing Sous to come forward. She hugged him, gave him a couple of pats on the back.
"Thanks for jumping into that fight, helping pick up my teeth and stuff."
Jacob laughed. "Did Monica tell you that?"
"Derrick. Are you gonna miss 'em?"
"Yeah," he paused for a moment. "I told the admission office about you. I told them everything you've done and went through. I told them you were so close to beating the Alpha. You're going to apply here, right?"
"Yeah! I hope to!"
"I gotta lot of work to do to catch up to my pupils."
"You gotta wear a uniform?"
"Nope!"
"Cool!"
Sous and Shadow walked out of the admissions building already have said bye to Donivan and thanking him for assisting with the transportation of Jacob, and to give Chay their best regards.
There was a tram station nearby that they went to where Shadow bought a ticket that would take them to the outside of their village. As they sat on the tram on their way back, Shadow tapped Sous on the shoulder.
"What got you curious about the Valley of Trey?"
Sous positioned herself with her back to the seat since she was sitting with her profile to the window to get a better view. She took a piece of candy out of her pocket and popped it in her mouth. They managed to get some at the ice cream shop that was within the tram station.
"Jacob told me the Alpha regenerated her arm. I know it was elf magic that did that. Just like it was elf magic that caused that one wolf to be immune to silver bullets. In the alchemy book you brought me, it talks about how advanced elves are when it comes to their ability to make weapons and alchemy. That they have some of the best technology compared to other species. Plus, it'll be harder for Apex to catch up to us."
Shadow sighed. "It was stupid for you to challenge her-
"But?"
Shadow chuckled as he placed his arm on the arm rest of the seat. Now it was his turn to look out the window, finding himself suddenly at peace with everything that took place in the last couple of weeks. Jacob, Sous and her Alpha battle, connecting with Monica, seeing Kara and her feelings for Sous and even her little brother who seemed to be smitten with Jacob. Jacob was able to receive an education at one of the best magic schools. It was a lot. He hadn't really had time to process it all except now as they ride in a tram that was filled with them and just three other people.
"But," he started. "You did amazing. The first half, I think the crowd honestly thought you were gonna win. You really had her. You've come a very long way in a very short time." He confirmed; he then added. "When you first mentioned wanting to be the Alpha of Apex, I scoffed at it-"
"But?"
He smiled and said, "But now, I think you have a chance." He looked at her and smiled at the little demon child whom he found himself getting accustomed to.
Together, they sat there quietly simply just watching the terrain and the people who were out and about as they made their way home. Sous should be proud of herself and what she's done within the amount of time, what she survived. She smiled.
"What I was meant to say," he paused. "They're not going to be coming after you for a while. You made your mark without pissing on a tree. So uh, the Valley of Trey?"
"I wanna go there. I wanna find the elves who are supplying Apex. I want to know why. How can you be allies to people who chased your people away? It doesn't make sense."
Shadow looked away from her and began to look back out the window-
"Also," he turned to look at her to see what she was going to finish saying. "I want to learn from the best." She finished with such dedication in her eyes even Shadow was enamoured, wanting to follow this Alpha until the end of the Earth. He came too and huffed, crossing his arms, nodding his head. To the Valley of Trey they would go. Maybe he'd get some new guns and rifles. Besides for the humans, the elves also had a nice fine armory with a multitude of weapons. He cracked the knuckles in his hands and head by turning his neck. He was ready to follow this Alpha.
