Chapter 28: The Basilisk Arc: Seven
In the attic, she will be.
A beast with white eyes is what you'll see.
Cursed with eight limbs and a round inflated bottom,
Her cries are rare, some even say seldom.
She ran to the spiders because she wanted power.
Unbeknownst to her, they would want her to repeat a poem with a voice much louder.
Louder than the previous victim whom they devoured.
Sous looked at Tany after she finished stating the rhyme.
"Who is the girl?"
Together they sat on a broken branch in front of Tany's house; the small neighborhood in which she resided was a one filled with mostly witches and wizards. Many of them were aware of the presence of the basilisk so they, of course, didn't worry of being turned to stone. They had spells to protect their eyes. Tany had also told Sous the vampire officials would simply discard the stones that were in the city.
"I think it's the vampires," she said.
"What do you mean?"
"I think they're calling the basilisk here," she confirmed.
"You said earlier it was because the basilisk was looking for a mate," Sous stated.
"Two things can be true at once. It's true their population is low and they have to go further and further to find mates. It's also true the vampires have been complaining about Vania being taken over by 'other species'."
Sous didn't know what to say; it was hard to see such characteristics from the vampires. She was so used to them being nice and compassionate. To hear they may be doing something malicious ruined her image of them. It was better to think of Apex Pack as the only bad entities she ever had to come across but here Tany was saying the vampires of Vania were possibly causing the harm of non-vampires in their city.
She turned to look at Tany whose skin gleamed in the moonlight like a light shade of blue from the dark brown color she was during the day while the sun was out. Her skin was clear, her nails were painted light blue.
Tany caught Sous looking at her. Sous didn't shy away but she did blush. The only girl she thought of in such a fashion was Kara and yet here was a girl who was completely different from Kara. Tany was smarted-mouthed, tactless, rude even, knowledgeable, and no novice when it came to spells.
"See something you like," Tany said with a sarcastic grin.
Sous nodded her head. "Hmm, hmm, you."
Tany looked Sous over. "I'm not sure what you are. You have features associated with so many species. I do know you're an Alpha." She paused. "I never met one before…until now."
Sous didn't say anything; she stayed quiet so Tany could finish talking.
Her voice was softer this time when she spoke to Sous. "Is it common for Alphas to make people around them feel safe?"
Sous shrugged her shoulders, her blue eyes shining within the night, like an emission from the soul. She scooted closer to Tany, a move that was bold yet transparent on how she felt for the girl who was her same age. "Do I make you feel safe?" Sous asked in an even softer voice.
Tany nodded her head, leaning in closer to the multi-layered girl-
"Tania!"
Sous and Tany turned to the direction. A stocky, hefty man stood by the door to her house. His hands cupped over his mouth. He saw his daughter speaking with Sous and waved her over.
"Come on inside, Tania, your mother is waiting. It's time for dinner. Say goodbye to your new friend."
"Yes, Papa!" Tany screamed back. She turned to look at Sous, quiet for a moment. "There's a girl back home in Red Woods that you fancy." She said it with such truth that Sous immediately opened her eyes wide, shocked. She could barely speak or form a sentence at how that information managed to get to Tany. Shadow hadn't even seen any wolves for them to relay a message to Kara and yet Tany knew of her. "Behind you on a tree branch, there's a black raven. His name is Icarus." Sous looked behind her and sure enough, saw the raven looking at her from a high tree branch. "He's a neighborhood boy that was turned into a raven by a cranky witch. She died many months ago and no one has been able to break the curse since. He was curious about you. Ravens love to gossip." Tany looked at Sous. "Everyone knows Doureena. Her name brings shivers to many. She has allies no wolves have ever been known to make and you stood toe to toe with her."
"TANIA!"
"Coming!" She called out to her dad; as she ran toward her house, she turned back to Sous. "I've been accepted into Hacate already. I'mma see you there?"
Sous nodded her head. Tany smiled and ran off to her house. With that, Sous turned to look at Icarus who still stood upon the branch. She twisted her body to get a good look at him, standing up to show her stance.
"Icarus! How about delivering a message. Since you gossip about her, might as well give her a message for me since there are no wolves for Shadow to speak to and I'm not multi-lingual." Icarus flapped his wings and picked at them before staring back at Sous. "Tell Kara to talk to her mom about being a witch. With love, Sous!" The raven gawked and flew off into the night.
