Chapter 4: They Were His Pack
[⚠️ Suspicious Content] Magae or Magaians was the name given to those who can do magic or magi, species that were able to manipulate the elements, create portions and other brews. They were the witches, the warlocks, the elves, the vampires, the pixies, the fairies, and even the werewolves. Being able to transform like they do, it's magic. Wolves viewed themselves differently and preferred to interact and remain amongst themselves. Very few wolves even went to the school to learn more about their abilities and history.
Jacob combed his hair in the mirror and smiled at himself. He was fourteen and growing fast. Recently he had been promoted as messenger. There were ranks in the Apex Pack. One of them was being a messenger, there was also a scout which would be the next rank, an assassin and then an elite. What Jacob really wanted was to be able to go to the school, to be able to learn more about what he can do in his wolf form. He couldn't though because his dad, an Alpha, didn't want him to go. His mother, just a mere human, neither Alpha nor Omega since only wolves had such genders, didn't know much about the situation.
"What would you even do? We can't do spells." His dad had said.
"We can do portions and herbs."
But his father didn't want to hear that. So he wouldn't be attending and the admission letter Jacob received was placed in the trash. It was moments like those that made Jacob hate the fact he was living with the wolves. He wished he was with the humans. He wouldn't be allowed to do magic but at least he'd be allowed to go to the school without his father interfering. Plus, he didn't have a lot of friends in the pack. Wolves that were mixed with humans were allowed in the pack along with their human mates but it was obvious they were seen as inferior.
Jacob rode his bike to the tracks. He saw Kara walking toward him with something like a sandwich bag in her hand.
"Kara?" Jacob got off his bike and walked to her. "What are you doing over here?" He was kind of in awe talking to the daughter of the Alpha and the Omegress.
"I was looking for Sous."
"You know Sous?!" He was not expecting to hear that. He was surprised a wolf would know the name of the mutt, or any mutt. All kinds of questions were twirling through his brain like how they even came to know each other. Maybe he'll ask later. "Hmm, it's Friday. She's probably sparring."
"What's that?"
"Hand to hand combat. Many of the orphans practice because of…because of…" He didn't know just how much she knew about the mutts predicament. "To protect themselves. They are orphans and they don't live with the humans because that would mean they wouldn't be able to use their magic." He paused for a bit. "Let me take you to them. What's that in your hand?"
"Oh, its food. I made it for Sous."
Jacob nodded his head. He did the same thing at times. Many of the orphans didn't have food but that wasn't why he was coming that day. He needed to tell them something and he needed to say it with Kara not around.
Sous placed her arms up in the form of an X and blocked the attack the orphan whom was mixed with fairy and human sent her way. His punches were the strongest but Sous brought her left leg up for the round kick. Kenan blocked the kick with his left arm upward. Their movements were fast and when they fought, their magic particles floating from their bodies in little small orbs the size of snow. The other orphans loved watching the two spar as they did and though it was sad they felt they had to learn how to defend for themselves after seeing what happened to their parents, the sparring brought them all together, making them a tight group of nine orphans.
Sniff!
Sous turned her head in the direction of Kara who she saw walking with Jacob.
"Ka-"
Pow
"Oooo!"
They all went as they watched Sous fly backward landing on her back. Kara quickly ran to her and knelt down on her knees. She placed the food to the side of her and placed her hand on Sous' chest.
"Sous!"
"Tsk, I'm alright. I got distracted."
Kenan laughed and walked over to his best friend, helping her up. His wings fluttered, nice of him to stay grounded when sparring her.
Sous rubbed her face, the soreness already starting to develop but she wouldn't cry. Instead she took her friend's hand and got back to her feet. When she smelt the food, she formed a grin with her fangs shining bright.
"Ooo, is this for me?"
Kara blushed and nodded her head.
"How about you go ahead and take Kara and enjoy the meal," Jacob suggested. He watched them walk off and when they were out of sight, he turned to Kenan just as the other six orphans gathered around them.
Sous and Kara walked to the tree, the spot where she witnessed the death of her father. His bones still in the bucket, her not having gone to the witch to speak to her dad's spirit, she was just unsure at this moment. When she slept at night, she dreamed of her mom who was still missing and she knew nothing about what happened to her. That was the reason her father was probably killed. When her mother went missing, her father went out looking for her, looking for answers.
"What's wrong, Sous?" Kara asked, seeing the tone had shifted and Sous seemed lost in thought.
Sous turned to look at her, eating her meal slowly at the same time. She wanted to ask Kara did she know the relationship she was having with Sous, Sous being a mutt and Kara being a wolf. Kara was completely ignorant to what Sous and the others were going through, seeing their parents killed before their eyes for no reason. There was no need to talk about it. Kara had the benefit of experiencing life as a kid. Sous didn't have that luxury.
Sous and Kara spent the entire day together. Sous took advantage of it, laughing, playing games like hide and go seek, tag, playing in the water. It was a good time and Sous decided to just let herself be free and for once not to worry. Besides, it didn't hurt that Kara was…was pretty. And once the evening wore on, they hugged and said their goodbyes. But reality hit once more when Sous went back to where her friends were, Jacob gone as well.
Kenan walked to her with the others going toward the sewers while Sous would head back to her shack.
"Sous," Kenan said, his eyes filled with worry. "They're hunting us…"
"What?" Sous heard him wrong for sure. There was no way.
"Jacob said he had to deliver a message to the head Alpha and there was a meeting, and in that meeting, they said they were going to hunt us."
Sous didn't know what to think but her heart was pounding. Her father was hunted and the parents of the others, and now they were next.
"Jacob wouldn't lie to us." Sous whispered.
"No, he wouldn't." Kenan said.
They were silent.
"They have assassins, Sous…"
They two of them were beginning to have small sweat beads at the temple of their heads.
"But…we're kids. They wouldn't kill us." Sous tried to rationalize.
"You said it yourself, Sous, 'Jacob wouldn't lie to us'."
Sous walked under the moonlight to her shack, looking behind her shoulder almost every second. When she heard the slightest movement, she turned. She was on high alert and she felt herself, her clothes were becoming filled with her sweat. Anxious and nervous, how could she sleep knowing they were out to kill her and her friends?
When she entered her shack, she looked around the not even one room place she called home. She peered into the shadows, attempting to see if there were any signs of a wolf. As she glared, she didn't see canines, she didn't see fur, nothing moved. Her eyes then flew to the bucket with her father's bones. She wouldn't be going to sleep that night.
Jacob sat on his bed in the darkness. He told the orphans what the wolves had planned. He was a betrayer. But they were his friends. They didn't look down on him because he was half wolf and half human. They didn't mock his canines being small; they didn't make fun of him for being weaker than the other Alphas. No, these kids, they cared for him, they laughed with him, made him feel welcome. They were his friends and he would do his best to protect them even if it meant betraying his pack. His friends, those orphans, those mutts, Kenan…Sous-they were his pack.
