Spider-Man: Horror games dev

Chapter 19: Before the night happen

"Holy shit, she drew... this mess?" Harry looked at each character with horror.

"It... It... It's horribly ugly!"

"It kinda fits the vibe of a children's game, though?" I scratched my head.

"Hmph! Only Peter truly understands the art behind each of these characters!" Gwen smiled.

Honestly... her creativity is a bit ahead of its time...

"That's...?" Harry pointed at an orange character.

"It's a Bully!"

"Oh, a bully, simpl—"

"No, no, the full name is *It's a Bully*!"

"...?"

"And this one?" I pointed at a character drawn in a... hard-to-describe way.

"Playtime!"

"And this?" Harry pointed at a character that looked like it was taken from Google and downgraded to the lowest resolution.

"That's the Principal!"

"Wow," Harry and I marveled at... this creativity.

"How many more characters are there?" Harry asked Gwen.

"Well... we'll figure it out when I run out of ideas!"

"..."

[How's it going?]

'Pretty good... I guess?'

[Sure about that? I don't trust that idiot in front of us.]

'No choice, I don't have any better ideas anyway.'

[You could ask me for help, you know?]

'No way, I'd ask anyone but you.'

[You treat me like that?! You jerk!!]

Suddenly, a loud stomach growl echoed.

Harry and I looked at the girl, who was slightly... blushing and looking away.

"...Want something to eat? I'll buy," Harry said.

"No need, just give me the money, and I'll get it. You just keep an eye on this idiot."

"WHAT?!" Harry looked at me.

"What? Watching her isn't that hard, is it? Just call me if she causes trouble."

Then I walked up to Gwen, holding her cheeks with both hands.

"Don't mess around, I'm begging you."

"Yes!" Gwen raised her hand, feigning innocence.

So Harry gave me the money, and I headed out.

"I haven't asked this yet... What the hell is she?"

[Gwen Stacy?]

"Who else could I mean?"

[Hehe... No idea!]

"..."

God, why do I always end up stuck with this thing?

After walking for a bit, I glanced at the dark alley from the other day.

[What's up? Reliving the memory of when we first met?]

"Yeah, and coming to this damn place was the dumbest decision I've ever made, since I'm constantly stuck pleasing you, the closest thing to the most evil entity in Lovecraft's universe," I complained.

[Oi! What's that supposed to mean?! You're lucky I haven't done anything to this planet yet!]

"Yet? So you're planning to?"

[Obviously! Watching humans destroy each other is always a blast!]

Well... at least this Outer God is honest about its desires, unlike everything else.

"...?"

I was about to leave, but I noticed something.

From the dark alley, there was some kind of noise.

"...Nope! Staying away is the best option. I've had enough of dealing with weird stuff!"

I quickly swapped my glasses for sunglasses, put on a mask, and shot a web to swing away.

Suddenly, the dark alley lit up as if someone had taken a flash photo.

"?!" I clung to the wall, anxiously looking at the spot.

...The noise stopped.

[What's wrong? Scared someone's out to get you?]

"Something like that."

[Pfft, I'm right here, what are you worried about?]

"Still not reassuring in the slightest."

I watched for a bit, then shot another web and got the hell out of there. No one wants to mess with creepy stuff.

And so, Peter left.

"..."

***

"One dollar for a box of corn dogs!"

"Awesome, thanks, vendor guy!"

"Come back and buy more next time!" The old man in sunglasses smiled.

"Oh wow, these are huge," I looked at the massive corn dog, big enough for a whole meal.

So I hurried back to Harry's place.

Knock knock.

"Who's that—huh?" Harry opened the door and looked surprised to see me.

"Food's here. Is Gwen still around? Hope she didn't wreck anything."

Harry blinked rapidly, as if what I said was strange.

"No... Didn't you just leave with Gwen after bringing food?"

...?

"What do you mean?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Earlier, you came by with a bag of food, said you were busy, and left with Gwen. You told me so."

"??"

What?? What's going on??

"...So you're saying I just took Gwen home?"

"Exactly."

"...Alright then. Thanks, here's your change. Oh, you hungry?"

"Nah."

"Okay, I'm outta here."

So Harry closed the door, and I walked back toward that dark alley nearby.

"...Damn it, something's seriously off."

[Good luck!]

"What the hell?? You're ditching me?!"

[Nah, I don't know what's going on, but it seems like chaos is brewing. Fun stuff!]

"...Ugh, I shouldn't expect anything from you."

But the 'me' Harry mentioned who took Gwen... where did they go? Home? To her place or mine?

"...I need to get home first."

So I swung back home using my webs, then stood in front of my house.

I opened the door and saw Aunt May and Uncle Ben doing their usual thing.

Phew...

"Hey, Peter! How's it going? Anything fun happen?"

"Did Gwen come by here, Aunt May?"

"Gwen? She went back to her home."

"Really? Thanks."

"Did something happen?" She looked at me.

"Nah, just some food I got from a stall. Help yourself if you want."

So I went upstairs... and stopped in front of my room.

"...?"

I looked down and saw Aunt May and Uncle Ben still doing their usual thing.

'...Gwen went home? But didn't another 'me' take her here, meaning Aunt May and Uncle Ben should've seen the other 'me'?'

"..." I looked at them, sweating.

I rushed into my room, locked the door, grabbed my phone, and googled something.

Doppelgänger.

Immediately, a flood of websites popped up about how to spot impostors, mysterious disappearances followed by people returning with identical corpses, and other creepy stuff.

"...God, I hate my smart brain sometimes..."

Someone copied my appearance... probably when I was near that dark alley by Harry's place.

Damn it... Most likely, that flash of light was when it copied my appearance.

Then it took Gwen, and Gwen went back to her place after both of them got to my house.

...Gwen went home? Does that mean she knew it wasn't me?

"...This is annoying, so many mysteries."

Then my fists clenched, my face contorted.

Aunt May and Uncle Ben... they're not them.

They're doppelgängers.

As the sun set, I took off my glasses and wiped them.

"...You dare mess with Aunt May and Uncle Ben? If you thought you could break my spirit like that, you've already succeeded..."

Gritting his teeth, Peter stared into the mirror.

His face was furious, irritated, and... enraged.
