Chapter 22: Talk
Tony and I stopped the car at a place I was extremely familiar with.
It was my school.
"Why... Why did we stop here?" I asked Tony, who had opened the car door and was looking at the school.
"According to Jarvis, this place has been completely taken over by Alternates."
"What?"
It was hard to believe. Why did it have to be my school?
"Hmm... Wow, this place has all three types of Alternates, and even humans! They must be planning something big here."
"What?! Then we have to save them!"
"Save them?"
Tony looked at me, his eyes cold, emotionless, and devoid of hope.
"Why should we save them?"
"...Because there are innocent people in there."
"Pfft, don't make me laugh, kid," Tony said as he approached the car, pressed something, and a red button appeared.
I had a bad feeling about that button.
"This is the perfect chance to wipe out the whole ant nest."
What?!
"But the innocent people—"
"Kid."
He glared at me.
"Everyone in that school is just a bunch of students, your bullies. From what I've seen, almost the entire school year, you've been their punching bag."
"I don't see why you'd have any reason to help them. What's the point? So they can keep bullying you tomorrow?"
"..."
He was completely right about my history with the other students at this school.
Before I met the Outer God, I was always the target.
It started with Flash Thompson, then his cronies, and eventually, it felt like the whole school was against me.
No one helped me. No one except Harry.
So why should I save them?
...But I still have to save them.
"Please, don't do anything to the school."
This time, Tony narrowed his eyes.
"What's this? I thought you were just a naive kid who couldn't face reality. Turns out, you're even worse—a foolishly idealistic kid, huh?"
He stepped in front of me, face-to-face.
"If you're so determined to save them, why don't you go in there yourself? Then I'll blow up the school and you along with it."
"You can't do that."
"Oh, kid, I'd do it without hesitation. I still don't trust you, you know."
He leaned against the car, smirking mockingly at me.
"Web-shooting, superhuman strength, insane healing abilities... I'm wondering, are you a monster pretending to be human?"
"Your AI already confirmed I'm human."
"The question is whether I choose to believe that. To me, you're not much different from a target to be eliminated."
We stared at each other in silence.
"Why don't you care about human lives?" I asked bluntly.
He looked at me, cracking his knuckles.
"I hate humans. Next question."
"But you're human too."
"That's the problem right now. In the future, I won't be human anymore. Got it?"
A Tony Stark who hates humans... This is really bad.
"If you've got nothing else to say, get out of my way, or I'll deal with you too."
"Mr. Stark."
He looked up, glancing at me.
"I'm still going to save them. What they did to me might be awful, but they still have their own lives. They have families they love, people they care about, and futures full of possibilities. I can't let temporary hatred or selfishness stop me from saving thousands of lives just because they treated me badly."
"Besides, I have a family. I know how painful it is to lose someone you love. So please, give me and them one last chance."
...
A breeze blew through, gently moving our hair.
Tony stared at me for a while before sighing.
"Thirty minutes."
"?"
"That's the time I'm giving you. If you can't handle it in time, I'll personally take care of this school—and you."
"...Thank you for trusting me."
"It's not trust. I want to see if you can actually do it. Thirty minutes is way too short for you."
"So, you're basically saying you want me to fail, right?"
"Exactly."
I took a deep breath and exhaled.
"Thirty minutes is more than enough."
Then I rushed into the school without looking back.
Tony stood there, watching my silhouette disappear completely.
[That's the first time you've backed down, Bae. You like that kid, don't you?]
"Well... Not exactly. It's just... He reminds me of myself when I was younger. Naive but righteous. Hopelessly foolish."
[So, in thirty minutes, you're going to blow up the whole school?]
"Of course... Except for that kid."
[Why?]
Tony smirked.
"I want to see him break, to realize that acting all righteous and moral doesn't get you a damn thing."
***
Earlier, when Tony and I were still driving,
he told me about a weakness humans could use against these Alternates.
Alternates always use their victims' fear as a weapon.
So, instead of being afraid, you need to feel a different emotion.
Maybe that's why I was able to take down two doppelgangers so easily.
But even so, Alternates aren't always weak.
They have the ability to replace their original counterparts, meaning if they replace someone with superpowers, they can use those powers too.
The Originals use this ability to its fullest extent. I got careless and ended up getting stabbed in the stomach by one.
So I have to be careful. The moment I open this door, I'm sure I'll be in for a tough fight.
...Well, that's what I thought.
"...?"
The school's lights were blazing brightly, not a single shadow in sight.
In front of me stood a man with a very familiar design.
"Oh! Hi! Welcome to the school!"
"???"
That's Baldi??? What???
"I'm Baldi! Your teacher! To help you improve, I'm going to ask you to solve all seven math notebooks. Every time you complete one, I'll give you a reward!"
What... What the heck is going on?
