Chapter 39: Coruscant (Part 3): Confrontation
When we arrived, the imposing dome of the Galactic Senate loomed before us like a monolith of power and authority. Its massive, dark gray structure reflected the artificial sunlight of Coruscant with an opaque glow, giving it an impenetrable air. Around it, numerous communication towers and antennae stretched skyward, creating a web of technology and constant surveillance.
"Well, here we are." Mon Mothma said with apparent calm as she descended from the speeder. His driver, dressed in a pristine gray uniform, hurried to open the door for him with a barely perceptible bow. I waited outside, attentive to our surroundings before following her inside.
The entrance to the Senate was at the top of a monumental staircase, its black duracero steps reflecting the glow of imperial lanterns. On either side, banners waved banners bearing the emblem of the Empire, their red and black symbols standing out against the dark hue of the structure. The breeze descending from the upper levels of Coruscant made the banners flutter with a dull sound.
As we ascended, I watched the comings and goings of the numerous senators, some walking hurriedly and others in small groups, discussing in whispers. But beyond the crowd, something else caught my attention. On either side of the main hall, colossal columns rose up, carved with reliefs of ancient senatorial figures. However, many of these figures appeared to have been modified, mutilated or outright removed, as if an attempt had been made to erase any vestige of the Republic.
Security was extreme. Squads of Imperial Guard constantly patrolled the entrance, their black armor barely reflecting the light. They carried blaster rifles and moved with absolute discipline, watching every movement of those present. Above us, several surveillance drones hovered in organized patterns, emitting faint blue flashes as they constantly scanned every approaching individual.
"Is this much surveillance normal?" I whispered to the senator, barely leaning toward her.
"Yes, however, there is something strange." She replied, her tone graver than usual, which put me on alert.
"What do you mean?"
She indicated with a slight nod toward the entrance.
"The guards at the door," she whispered, and when I followed her gaze, I immediately understood her concern. There were two Death Troopers posted at the entrance, their imposing black armor contrasting with the gray of the Senate. Beside them, an officer in a dark uniform, probably an Empire lieutenant, was scanning chain codes of all who entered. "These are no ordinary Stormtroopers."
"Aren't they usually here?"
Mon Mothma shook her head, her expression hardening.
'Something very strange is going on.' I thought as I unconsciously adjusted my stance, preparing myself for whatever might come.
As we reached the entrance, the Imperial officer raised his code scanner. His cold gaze settled on Mon Mothma with an indecipherable expression.
"Good morning, Senator, would you let me see your ID?"
She nodded calmly and pulled out a card with her chain code printed on it. The officer scanned it, and after a few seconds, the device emitted a beep confirming verification. A holographic screen displayed over his device, showing the senator's face and information, which was examined with meticulous precision.
"Gentleman, your ID, please." Said the officer, now addressing me.
"It's okay, he's coming with me." Mon Mothma interjected firmly.
"I'm sorry, Senator, but anyone seeking entry to the Grand Imperial Senate must present ID, even escorts."
She looked about to protest, but I held up a hand to calm her down.
"Relax, Senator, everything is under control," I said as I extracted the card Bail Organa had given me. It wasn't the first time I'd encountered such a checkpoint on the moon of Coruscant. Just a minor hiccup.
The scanner read it and beeped, but I noticed something peculiar. The officer stared at the holographic screen for a few seconds too long, as if analyzing something carefully. His expression was neutral, but his gaze betrayed a doubt.
"Is everything in order?" asked Mon Mothma subtly.
The officer seemed to have been snapped out of his trance and blinked before handing the card back to me.
"Yes, senator. All in order."
'Something is definitely not right,' I thought as we headed inside. It didn't take long for me to confirm it.
A few steps inside the lobby, a second officer intercepted us. He was escorted by two Death Troopers, whose firm stance and intimidating presence made even the imperial officials themselves look nervous.
"Forgive the intrusion, Senator Mon Mothma," he said with a dry tone, but feigned politeness, "but information has reached us that you are carrying an escort. According to the 'Protocol for the Operation of the Imperial Senate,' escorts must be escorted to a box designated by the ISB."
Mon Mothma was stunned for a moment, but quickly nodded. The officer motioned for me to follow him, and without argument, I obeyed.
He led me up a seemingly endless flight of stairs. We climbed for minutes until we reached the top of the Senate. Instead of stopping, however, the officer diverted the path down a side corridor, leading me to an imposing door. I failed to perceive if there was anyone on the other side, but every fiber of my being screamed at me that something was not right.
"Here we are." The officer stopped in front of a massive dura-steel door, his hands firmly clasped behind his back. Despite his cordial tone, his look denoted that he was expecting me to come inside.
The death troopers escorting him took up positions on either side of me, their imposing black armor reflecting the dim illumination of the hallway. Their dark visors watched me emotionlessly, like predators assessing their prey. They were blocking me from any possible escape route.
I let out a slight sigh, appearing resigned, but in my mind I was already calculating alternatives. I nodded my head, taking a step forward. My hand, hidden under my tunic, subtly slipped over the metal cylinder of my lightsaber, ready for any eventuality.
I crossed the threshold and what I saw left me completely motionless.
The office was vast, adorned with imposing columns and large windows overlooking the endless city of Coruscant. However, none of that captured my attention.
In the center of the room, seated on a raised throne behind a massive obsidian desk, sat the most feared figure in the galaxy.
Emperor Palpatine.
'No mistake...it's him.'
Confirmation came not only from my eyes, but from the Force. His presence was suffocating, an unfathomable well of pure darkness. It hung in the room like a poisonous mist, enveloping everything in a tide of palpable corruption. His cadaverous face, furrowed with deep wrinkles and a sickly hue, curved into a perfidious smile at the sight of me.
"Hello, Vader's apprentice. I've long wanted to meet you in person."
His raspy voice reverberated through the room, infused with a subtle venom that bristled the skin.
My mind worked frantically. If I tried to flee, a platoon of guards would undoubtedly be waiting for me on the other side of the door. If I fought, my chances against the Emperor alone were slim. However... it was either that, or jump out the window.
'I think I'll have to fight. I see no other choice.'
"Are you done thinking of ways to escape yet, boy?"
The mockery in his tone made me tense up. How had he known?
'Read my mind? 'No, I don't think so. My mental barriers are solid, and I felt no attempt at invasion. Most likely he had deduced my thinking from my posture and the time I spent scanning the room.'
I cleared my throat and finally spoke:
"How did you know I was alive, did Vader tell you?"
Palpatine's smile widened, a dark crack in his gaunt face.
"No." He leaned low on his throne, interlacing his bony fingers. "A few weeks ago, I sensed a disturbance in the Force. You made quite a fuss. So I secretly asked my spies to track you down."
"How did you know it was me? It could have been anyone else."
The Emperor let out a dry laugh, vibrant with amusement.
"Do you take me for a fool, boy?"
He stood up in one fluid motion, and his dark robe seemed to flutter as if it were alive. He took a few steps toward me, standing only feet away. Unconsciously, my fingers tightened around the handle of my lightsaber.
"I am fully aware of my apprentice's pathetic attempts to cover up his failure," he continued, his tone almost nonchalant.
"That's why I'm going to make you an offer... one you can't refuse."
I frowned. "An offer? What kind?"
"Join me." His voice descended in a seductive whisper, charged with an intangible power that filtered through the Force.
"Destroy Vader... and become my apprentice."
My thoughts froze for an instant.
"My old apprentice is nothing more than a slave to my commands," Palpatine continued, sneering. "Besides, his injuries have reduced his potential considerably. But you... you could take his place at my side."
He said it with disturbing conviction, and for a moment, my mind explored the idea. Taking down Vader...the very man who had used and manipulated me. It was tempting.
However, a warning echoed in my mind.
I had studied Palpatine for years. Not only his skills in the Force, but his psychology. I knew well that this man did not share power. If I accepted his offer, I would become the same as Vader, a slave to his designs. And he would make me hunt my friends and...
The image of a Mandalorian girl appeared on my head.
I took a deep breath and made my decision.
"I'm sorry, but I will have to decline your offer, Emperor."
My hand slid out with lethal precision, and in an instant, the bright crimson blade of my lightsaber ignited, lighting up the room with its bloody glow.
The change in Palpatine's expression was subtle but noticeable. His smile disappeared, replaced by a grimace of impatience and disdain.
"You disappoint me, boy," he muttered coldly. "I thought you possessed more ambition."
He slid his hand down the sleeve of his robe, and an instant later, a metallic object fell into his grasp.
With a sharp snap, a crimson lightsaber ignited in his hand.
"If you will not join me... then you will be destroyed."
And before I could react, he lunged towards me with superhuman speed as he released a Force Scream of sorts.
The attack was brutal. I barely had time to raise my saber to block the first thrust. The force of the impact echoed off my arms like a clash of lightning.
Palpatine wasted no time. With terrifying precision, he strung together a series of swift, lethal strikes, each aimed at a vital point.
'He's more powerful than I imagined.'
Retreating, I resorted to Form III, deflecting his attacks with maximum efficiency. Each clash of our sabers generated flashes of red light, reflecting off the walls of the office like a harbinger of the battle that was just beginning.
The sound of the lightsabers clashing echoed through the room like the echo of a thunderstorm. Each of Palpatine's blows came with lethal precision, seeking to pierce my defenses with terrifying dexterity.
I was forced to retreat, deflecting his thrusts with Form III, the quintessential defensive technique. However, it was not enough. His speed was overwhelming, his attacks lightning fast, and the pressure he exerted on me was suffocating.
A downward slash was aimed at my collarbone. I blocked it on instinct, but the force of the impact sent me reeling. Before I could regain my balance, Palpatine spun with inhuman fluidity and launched a lunge straight at my abdomen.
I jumped back at the last second, feeling the heat of the saber pass inches from my torso.
Palpatine chuckled.
"That's all you learned from Vader?" he sneered, his voice harsh and venomous.
I didn't respond. There was no point in talking to him, it would only make me lose my concentration.
I gritted my teeth and shifted my posture. If I continued to be defensive, sooner or later he would get the better of me. I needed to fight back.
As soon as I touched the ground, I launched an upward slash seeking his torso. Palpatine slid to the side with inhuman ease and countered with a side slash. I dodged it by ducking, rolled onto my side and as I stood up, I directed a quick diagonal slash at his head.
For the first time, I saw his expression change slightly as he was forced to block my attack with both hands.
I seized the moment and increased the pressure with a flurry of rapid strikes. My movements flowed with surgical precision, each thrust aiming to force him to yield ground.
But Palpatine did not yield.
With a guttural growl, he raised a free hand, and suddenly, I felt an invisible force slam into my chest like a hammer.
The Force.
I was sent hurtling backward, crashing against one of the columns in the office. The impact rattled me to my core, but I managed to keep my lightsaber ignited.
Palpatine advanced slowly, his saber glowing with a sinister intensity.
"Your potential is great," he murmured with a twisted smile. "But you are still weak."
My breathing quickened. I needed to change my strategy.
I couldn't overpower him with brute strength, but there was another way…
I focused on the Force, feeling its flow around me. I let it course through my body, amplifying my reflexes. My breathing slowed, my mind cleared.
When Palpatine raised his saber for a downward slash, I reacted instantly.
Instead of blocking, I tilted to the side at the last second, letting his strike pass harmlessly.
Seizing the opening, I spun on my axis and lunged with a quick thrust toward his side.
Palpatine grunted and stepped back, dodging the strike by a narrow margin.
"Interesting…" he muttered, a flicker of something almost like amusement in his yellow eyes.
I didn't give him time for another taunt. I propelled myself toward him, chaining together a series of fast and precise attacks. My saber spun in crimson arcs, searching for any gap in his defense.
Palpatine met my assault with equal ferocity. His saber moved with unholy speed, his cuts sweeping with deadly fluidity.
Each clash of our blades illuminated the room with crimson sparks, casting wild shadows on the walls.
Then, without warning, he extended a hand and unleashed a bolt of Force lightning.
I had no time to react.
The blue lightning struck me square in the chest, and an indescribable pain tore through every fiber of my being.
My body convulsed uncontrollably as I collapsed to my knees, my lightsaber slipping from my grasp.
Palpatine's laughter echoed like the toll of death.
"Did you truly believe you could defy me?" he hissed, advancing with slow, deliberate steps.
Every muscle in my body burned, every nerve screamed in agony.
But I wasn't finished.
I wasn't going to die here.
Gathering all the hate I had accumulated on the time, I clenched my teeth and let the fury, the pain, and the determination surge through me. The Force swirled within me like an unleashed storm.
With a roar, I threw my hands forward and unleashed my own torrent of Force lightning.
Unlike before, the usual blue hue shifted—turning a deep crimson as it erupted from my fingertips.
The crimson lightning shot through the air like enraged serpents, colliding head-on with Palpatine's blue bolts. The clash of raw energies ignited a blinding explosion at the center of the room.
The Emperor narrowed his eyes, surprised by my counterattack, but his expression quickly shifted into a sinister grin.
"Interesting…" he hissed, doubling the intensity of his assault.
Sparks crackled between us, illuminating the office with chaotic flashes. The durasteel floor began to crack beneath our feet, the walls trembled, and the air grew dense, charged with pure energy.
I pushed forward with all my might, feeling the searing heat coursing through my arms, but Palpatine matched my intensity. We both stood firm, unleashing torrents of energy, each struggling to overpower the other.
The pressure in the room skyrocketed. Objects began to levitate, drawn into the Force's turbulence. The Emperor's desk shattered into a thousand splinters, and the statues flanking the chamber cracked before exploding into a storm of debris.
Then, the collision reached its breaking point.
A shockwave roared from the point of contact between the lightning bolts, expanding outward with great force.
The reinforced glass windows couldn't withstand the unleashed power. They shattered in unison, erupting into a storm of gleaming fragments that shot into Coruscant's void.
The sound was deafening.
The explosion rocked the very foundations of the Senate. Lights flickered, alarms blared throughout the structure, and a deep tremor coursed through the corridors.
From the outside, a blinding flash engulfed the Imperial Senate, as if a lightning strike had struck its very core. The shockwave radiated outward in a dazzling burst, momentarily eclipsing the artificial night of Coruscant, casting flickering shadows across the city.
In the chaos of the blast, we were both hurled in opposite directions.
I was sent flying backward, tumbling through the air like a ragdoll before crashing brutally against one of the shattered columns. The air was forced from my lungs in a choked gasp.
Palpatine, for his part, slammed against the far wall with an equally thunderous impact. For an instant, the chamber was consumed by an unnatural silence, broken only by the residual crackling of energy still dancing in the air.
My body burned, my vision blurred with pain, but I knew the fight wasn't over.
Not while he was still breathing.
So, despite the agony, I forced myself up, summoned my lightsaber from a distant corner of the office into my hand, and ignited it, advancing slowly toward the Emperor.
Each step echoed in the absolute silence that followed the battle. The night breeze of Coruscant filtered through the shattered windows, bringing with it an icy chill that made the Emperor's tattered robes flutter.
Palpatine lay on the floor. His hunched figure trembled, his breathing came in ragged gasps. His face, ravaged by age and the corruption of the Dark Side, reflected pure, absolute terror.
For the first time, I saw him vulnerable.
The man who had manipulated and destroyed an entire galaxy, the most powerful Sith in history… now looked up at me, eyes wide, pleading.
"No… please… don't do it," he rasped, his voice a broken whisper. "I am too weak… let me live."
A sneer of disgust curled my lips.
"The most powerful being in the galaxy… the most successful Sith of all time… and yet, in the end, you beg for your life like any other."
I tilted my head in disdain, letting the mockery seep into my tone.
"Pathetic."
The terror on his face vanished instantly.
It was replaced by pure rage.
With a beastly roar, Palpatine raised his hands and unleashed one final storm of dark lightning—a torrent of pure destruction.
Time seemed to slow.
I saw the blue flare erupt from his fingertips, the energy crackling through the air.
But I was ready.
With a cry of effort, I raised my lightsaber and blocked the attack at the last moment. The impact was brutal. It forced me back a step, the lightning snaking across my crimson blade, but this time, it wouldn't bring me down.
Not this time.
I pushed forward with everything I had.
I advanced through the storm of lightning, my saber absorbing the Emperor's devastating power. Every step was agony, the electricity searing the skin on my arms, but I pressed on.
Palpatine growled in desperation, intensifying his attack.
"DIE!" he bellowed, his voice dripping with hatred and frustration that I still lived.
But he was no longer a master toying with his prey.
He was a cornered man.
One step more.
Then another.
And finally, with a battle cry, I swung my lightsaber in a lethal arc and drove it into his chest.
Emperor Palpatine froze.
His mouth opened in a silent gasp. His wide, yellow eyes stared at me in utter disbelief.
There was no turning back.
With a fierce motion, I twisted the blade and dragged it upward, slicing through his body with a final, decisive strike.
An unearthly scream erupted from his throat—a mixture of fury and agony that echoed darkly through the Force itself.
The skies of Coruscant seemed to tremble.
Suddenly, a torrent of dark energy burst from the Emperor's body like a black inferno. The entire office shook violently, the floor cracked apart, and the shattered remains of the windows were obliterated once more by an invisible shockwave.
A blinding flash illuminated the Senate.
From the outside, the Imperial Palace seemed to convulse. A bolt of black lightning shot into the sky, as if the very fabric of the Force was tearing apart with the Sith's death.
And then…
Silence.
Palpatine's body collapsed.
He fell without resistance, his dark robes spreading like a shroud.
The Dark Lord of the Sith… the Galactic Emperor… was dead.
My chest rose and fell with labored breaths.
My legs faltered, and I dropped to one knee, still gripping my lightsaber.
I had done it.
I had killed the most dangerous man in the galaxy.
But… something told me this was only the beginning of something far worse.
