Chapter 4: Duchess's palace
I was awakened by rays of sunlight streaming through the window of the infirmary where I was. I had fallen asleep without even realizing it. Leaning back on the bed, I could see the landscape outside the window more clearly.
It was early morning, and the first rays of sunlight were hitting the many buildings of Mandalore, reflecting off their windows and creating a beautiful, though chaotic, view with the usual movement in the streets.
Looking around, everything seemed the same—except for Master Windu, who was sitting on the floor with his eyes closed in a meditative posture. Slowly getting out of bed, my feet touched the cold floor, sending a shiver up my spine.
As I approached Master Windu, I was able to observe him more closely. He really did look just like Samuel L. Jackson. I had an idea and tried to focus to see if I could sense what he was feeling, because apparently I'm Force-sensitive. That must be why I could feel him yesterday—so why not try ?
Focusing on him, I couldn't sense anything. So I tried to recall the feeling I had that night. Closing my eyes and concentrating, I felt the pressure in my chest start to build, but this time I tried to spread it through my body.
I could feel that cold sensation spreading through me—it was like stepping under a freezing shower.
"You know," Master Windu said, pulling me out of my concentration as I found him staring at me. "It's not polite to try and read people's emotions like that," he said, getting to his feet.
"S-sorry," I replied, embarrassed for being caught in the act.
"You have good instincts, but you lack the necessary training, which is why I could sense your attempt," he said, looking at me.
An awkward silence filled the room as the Jedi Master seemed to size me up from head to toe.
"You'll come with me to the duchess's palace. Unfortunately, I have a meeting to finish, and I'd prefer you to be somewhere I can see you. After that, we're going to Coruscant," he said, as if stating a simple fact.
"Coruscant ?" I asked, confused. Wasn't he going to punish me ? I kind of killed a man two days ago. "I don't understand. What would I do there ?"
"You're coming with me to the Jedi Temple. The Council will decide what to do with you," he replied. "Take a shower and put on clean clothes. You can't go to the palace looking like that. Wait for me to call you," he said, leaving the room.
'A shower doesn't sound bad,' I thought. It had been at least three weeks since I'd had a proper bath—just dirty rainwater until now.
Looking beside my bed, I saw what appeared to be folded clothes. Picking them up, I headed to the bathroom. It wasn't much different from a normal one, just more seats and more buttons—probably to accommodate different species.
Stopping in front of the mirror, I could see my reflection. I had tried before, but puddles on the street don't work very well.
I had dirty black hair, matted with dirt and other things. My face was just as dirty, with a small, still-pink scar—probably a souvenir from the past few days. I've got to admit, this medical tech is pretty good.
But what really stood out were my eyes—a dark, almost glowing violet. They were really beautiful, especially considering that in my past life my eyes were brown. So that was a surprise.
Stepping under what looked like a showerhead, I pressed what I thought was the on button, and a welcome stream of hot water poured over my body, washing away the grime that had built up over the past weeks. The hot water slowly relaxed my small muscles, still sore from the events of the last few days.
That shower was very much needed.
A few minutes later, I was dressed in the new clothes. They resembled a Jedi robe, only in a child's size and in gray. How did he know my size ? The question popped into my head.
Looking in the mirror again, I could see myself more clearly now. Without the dirt, my skin had a pale tone, my hair looked darker, and I must say—I'm not bad-looking.
'I'm definitely going to grow into a handsome guy,' I thought, a small smirk curling the corner of my lips—until I heard a knock at the door.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK *
"Boy, are you ready ? We need to go," I heard Master Windu's voice say from behind the door.
"I'm coming," I replied, stepping out of the bathroom.
———
An hour later, we were standing in front of a large gray palace with light blue details. Walking to the entrance beside Master Windu, I saw five people approaching from ahead.
When we stopped, we were able to see each of them in detail. Leading the group was a fair-skinned woman with blonde hair and blue eyes. She wore a strange kind of hat, but it didn't take away from her beauty.
The Duchess Satine.
"Master Windu, I hope your emergency has been resolved. We still need to finish our conversation," she said in a friendly but serious tone.
"Of course, Duchess Satine. In fact, I brought the source of all this commotion," he said, placing a hand on my shoulder. I looked at him with a shocked expression—it was like throwing me to the wolves.
The duchess and her companions, for their part, seemed to finally notice my presence. Their gazes were confused. The duchess gave me a faint smile, but her attention quickly returned to the Jedi Master.
"What's the meaning of this, Master Windu ? I hope you have a good reason for bringing this child here," she said.
"Yes, Duchess, we're going to have a long conversation," he replied in an equally serious tone.
I swallowed hard when I heard that. I could practically see the sparks of discord igniting between the two of them.
'This isn't going to end well,' I thought with a sigh.
