Chapter 117: Chapter 117 – Meeting with the Five Elders
Passing through a marble-paved path, Shalria led Kaito to the room where the Five Elders usually convened.
This time, the doorway wasn't lined with the usual group of men in black.
Instead, two individuals stood guard—both wore white robes and strange masks: one red, the other black.
Kaito looked at the two without any expression. From their attire, he figured they must be CP0, directly under the World Government.
Judging from the masks, the red one had appeared later in the anime and was called Gismonda. As for the one with the black mask, he hadn't shown up in the series. Kaito's gaze lingered on him.
With the Rinnegan, the eye that governs life and death, Kaito was especially sensitive to the presence of death.
Just one glance was enough—he confirmed the black-masked one wasn't even alive. It was likely some kind of puppet or similar construct.
Shalria frowned. She'd never seen these two before. Who the hell were they?
And now that she'd already brought Kaito here, why weren't they moving aside?
The masked duo stood there silently, as if awaiting a cue. Finally, an aged voice came from within the room.
"Let Uchiha Kaito enter."
Upon hearing the command, the two masked figures stepped aside and opened the way.
Shalria shot a glare at them and raised her foot to enter, only for Gismonda to block her path with an outstretched hand. His tone was polite, but firm.
"Lady Shalria, the elders have only summoned Uchiha Kaito. Please remain here."
Shalria was visibly unhappy. She opened her mouth, ready to protest, but before she could speak, Kaito gently patted her shoulder from behind.
"Alright. Thanks for showing me the way. You can head back now. And don't worry—I haven't forgotten what I promised. When I get the chance, I'll take you shopping around Sabaody."
Shalria's eyes lit up.
"Really??"
"Of course. I keep my word."
"Alright then, I'll go back first!"
She knew her status didn't hold much weight in this place anyway. Since she'd already gotten Kaito's promise, no point pushing it further.
After giving him one last reluctant glance, Shalria turned and left.
Once she was gone, Kaito didn't spare the masked guards another look and simply stepped into the room.
As he entered, five pairs of eyes immediately locked onto him.
Kaito's expression didn't change. He stood calmly, staring at the five old men seated on the sofas.
These five old geezers were undoubtedly schemers. Kaito didn't know how they compared to Danzo, but their aura of authority far surpassed his.
They were, after all, the highest leaders of the World Government. Danzo, at best, wasn't even worthy of being called a village head.
His greatest claim to fame was briefly serving as the "5.5th" Hokage of Konoha—only to be killed by Sasuke. Before dying, he managed to pull off a dramatic sealing of a bridge.
Besides, if you didn't know the identity of the Five Elders, they just looked like five grumpy old men. But Danzo? One glance, and anyone could tell he was up to no good.
The Five Elders also studied Kaito, their gaze resting briefly on his Rinnegan.
Then, the one wearing a white kimono and holding a katana spoke first.
"Uchiha Kaito, a pleasure. Your eyes are indeed as unique as the rumors say. I've heard that they're exclusive to your clan?"
Kaito raised an eyebrow. So they were getting straight to the topic of his Rinnegan, huh? This guy was smiling with a dagger behind his back.
But even if these old men were eyeing his Rinnegan, Kaito wasn't the least bit worried.
With his current strength, unless Mary Geoise had someone stronger than a Yonko hiding in the shadows, he could destroy the place and retreat without issue.
He smiled slightly and replied,
"That's right. Or have you seen someone else with these eyes?"
The youngest of the five—a blond Elder—frowned. Kaito's tone was far too insolent.
He opened his mouth to scold him, but the Elder in the black flat-topped hat gave him a glance and subtly shook his head.
The blond Elder swallowed his words and sat back down, glaring silently.
The Elder in the white kimono remained calm, not provoked at all. He replied with a question,
"Perhaps we have."
The atmosphere in the room suddenly turned heavy.
Kaito narrowed his eyes and looked at the white-robed Elder. A purple gleam flickered in his Rinnegan.
But then, the Elder chuckled lightly and gave the katana on his lap a small shake.
"Just teasing. Didn't you say you were the last of the Uchiha?"
"Heh, for a second there I thought someone else from my clan had survived."
"Oh? And if that were true, what would you do?"
"If someone really had survived, then that would make them my last remaining kin. I'd probably sit down with them over tea and catch up."
"Hahaha! You're quite sentimental, aren't you?"
"You flatter me."
The blond Elder was starting to lose his patience. These two were getting more and more off-topic. They hadn't summoned Uchiha Kaito for some damn tea party.
He cut in loudly.
"Uchiha Kaito! Is the Op-Op Fruit really in Kaido's possession? Our intelligence reports found nothing that proves he has it!"
Kaito gave a helpless shrug and feigned confusion.
"Beats me. As far as I know, Kaido definitely snatched it that day. The Marines aboard those five warships all saw it happen."
"You were in charge of that escort mission. Don't you think you should take responsibility?"
"I'm not sure what that means. Am I supposed to go fight Kaido over it?"
The blond Elder was practically trembling with rage at Kaito's attitude, but just as he was about to blow up again, the black flat-hat Elder gave him another look—effectively silencing him once more.
He realized he was losing his cool too many times today. Ever since Kaito showed up, he couldn't stand hearing the name "Uchiha."
The flat-hat Elder turned to Kaito and spoke calmly.
"Uchiha Kaito, we need you to make a trip to Onigashima. Gather intelligence on the Op-Op Fruit. With your abilities, this shouldn't be difficult."
So they wanted him to go to Onigashima to gather intel?
Yeah, right.
Kaito figured this guy just wanted him to clash with Kaido and use it as a way to test his strength.
Fine. He'd go.
Whether or not he actually fought Kaido didn't matter—he had important business to take care of there anyway.
