Chapter 3: Chapter 3

"Where is this?" A figure raised his head from a pile of loess. It was Yowen Dicc.

After being stunned for a while, Yowen finally came to his senses and looked at the layer of loess on his body. "Am I being buried?" he wondered.

He looked up and around. He was still in the corner where he had been hiding. The light had penetrated the loess in front of him. "This should be the soil blown up by the explosion that then fell on me. It must be that I was not found."

With only the sound of burning flames echoing in his ears, Yowen gently pushed away the iron bucket in front of him, cautiously stuck his head out to observe, and made sure there was no one else around. Then he slowly stood up and walked out of his hiding place.

Looking at the mess before him, Yowen face turned green and he leaned over to vomit—something he had no choice but to do. He was a good young man who had grown up under the red flag. How had he ever seen such a scene?

He didn't stop until he had emptied his appetite. His body, still lying on the ground, continued to twitch slightly.

After a while, Yowen raised the back of his hand to wipe the corners of his mouth, leaving a brown mark of dirt on his chin and face, and slowly stood up.

There was no way this "dog system" would normally answer questions—it usually ignored people, making it impossible to go back. In this world, the scene before him was very common, and he knew he must adapt.

Yowen took out a bottle of beer, broke its mouth, and poured it into his mouth. The smell of the beer diluted the scent of blood and gunpowder on his breath. He threw away the bottle, then slowly walked toward the surrounding wreckage, rummaging around for something to pick up.

An hour later, his eyes no longer flickered. He looked at the navigation system map and considered the nearby roads as he walked in small steps. After a while, all he saw was a mess and a path leading into the distance.

On the highway, after ensuring no one was around, Yowen retrieved the pickup truck from his space backpack, sat in the driver's seat, started the car, and sped off into the distance. The whistling wind and the roar of the engine filled his ears as he stared straight ahead, never letting go of the accelerator. He didn't know where he was headed; he didn't even look at the map. All he knew was that he had to keep moving, with the old pickup truck creaking along.

Suddenly, a battle-damaged pickup truck rushed forward. Feeling the increasingly violent shaking of his car and noticing a warning on the display, Yowen slowly decelerated and finally stopped on the side of the road.

Leaning back in his chair, he held the steering wheel with one hand and covered his left chest with the other, taking a deep breath to calm his racing heartbeat.

After a long moment, he suddenly raised his hand and slapped himself. With a gloomy face, Yowen took out a piece of rusk from his space backpack and chewed it. As if he had suddenly remembered something, his expression changed and a sensation gripped his throat. After grunting, he covered his mouth tightly to prevent spitting. He stared at the bread in his hand and opened his mouth several times, seemingly unsure where to begin.

Then, with a resounding "Bang," Yowen took out a bottle of beer, opened it on the car door, took a big sip, and then picked up the bread, stuffing it into his mouth. After a long time, he finished the bread and ended up with a few more empty bottles.

"I remember that the protagonist V in 2077 can set the attributes of the body in various directions. I wonder if I can try it here," he mused.

Yowen Dicc opened the main interface of the system and found the character panel. "Hmm~ It's almost the same as in the game. It seems that the system has been modified to adapt to this world."

He then opened the modifier and, seeing the same content as when he played the game before, decisively activated the options for attributes and skill points before returning to the character panel. As expected, the unused attribute and skill points appeared.

"Satisfied" (* ̄︶ ̄) he thought, upgrading his physical attributes and related skills all at once. "Ignore the effects for now; just fill them up first."

After several back-and-forth operations, Yowen Dicc looked at his character attributes and skills and nodded with satisfaction. Now he had at least the ability to protect himself.

He loaded a bullet into his gun, aimed it at a dozen bottles on rocks in the distance, and fired in quick succession—bang, bang, bang, bang.

Glancing at an intact bottle in the distance, he sighed heavily. "It seems that marksmanship can't be practiced alone, nor can it be achieved solely through skills and attributes. But where can I find someone to learn marksmanship in a place like this?" Yowen Dicc opened the map and zoomed in, finally realizing that he was still far from Night City, the main background city in 2077. With the current condition of his pickup truck, it was estimated to break down halfway—even if it managed to reach the road. There was no guarantee of safety, and he could trust no one in this desolate land.

"Hmm~ Maybe I can find a gang of homeless people. In the world of 2077, they don't call themselves gangs but rather a group of homeless individuals who rely on each other and struggle to survive. They support one another, and home is their final destination." Recalling the Rangers from the previous game, he remembered that the main Ranger camp in 2077 was the Adecado—families with many temporary camps all over the West Coast. In the game, Thor led one of these groups, so the chance of finding the Adecado family seemed very high.

"What year is it now?"It's 2070.

Hmm~ There were still seven years left before the 2077 timeline. It seemed there was still a chance to find Thor and Panam's team of wanderers.

After making up his mind, Yowen began searching the map for places to stay or camp on the way to Night City. After marking more than a dozen points, he checked the system navigation in his mind and drove the pickup truck toward the target.

It was getting dark again. After refueling, Yowen finally arrived at a motel. After adding to his account balance through the modifier, he parked the car, secured his gun at his waist, walked in, and asked for a room. He also bought a bunch of food and drinks (apparently, with the modifier on, unlimited supplies were available as long as they were stored in his space backpack).

Once he had gathered his things in the room, Yowen looked around and felt speechless. "This room is such a mess. There are eye-catching blood stains on the wall. Isn't this a shady place?" Although he had played Cyberpunk 2077 and understood some of its grim environments, encountering it in reality was a different matter. "It seems I must be careful tonight. I can't sleep unsafely. The doors and windows of this room are damaged; they need to be locked." Yowen placed a bunch of food from his hand into his space backpack, locked the doors and windows, and began to inspect the room bit by bit, drawing on experiences he had learned from the Internet in his previous life. The room was very simple, with only one bed. It wasn't large, but it did have a bathroom, a mini bathtub, a toilet, and a sink. The mirror above the sink lay broken on the ground and was unusable.

At the door, Yowen took out a grenade he had acquired from cleaning up a battlefield from his space backpack and fixed it onto the door bolt as a simple trap. As long as the door was opened, the grenade would be triggered. He then set up the same trap on the window and closed it. With the curtains blocking the light, he chose a corner on the inner side of the room, placed the mattress there, and stood it next to the window to form a triangle with the corner. He then put all the loaded bullets for his guns next to the pillow—prepared for emergencies.

After doing all this, Yowen sat cross-legged on the mattress, took out the burrito and Coke he had bought at the front desk, and began his dinner for the day
