Chapter 222: 222
222. Chapter 222: Hughie's Moment in the Sun
"Don't say that, because it makes me sound like a major villain from a movie, and you guys are my lackeys. Of course, considering your supernatural ability to mess everything up, it's not impossible, but I prefer to think of myself as a protagonist. Anyway, getting back to the point, I called you because I wanted to tell you some good news."
"Good news? Are you saying the White House decided to press the nuclear bomb button on Vought International and then with a bang, flatten Vought?" Billy quipped.
"If Manhattan is occupied by the Supe legion one day, I think the President might consider it," Mallory on the other end of the phone said, flipping through the file on Victoria Neuman in front of her and looking at the information on it. "The White House has decided to establish a new department specifically responsible for Supe crime and punishment. You can call it the Federal Bureau of Superhuman Affairs, or FBSA."
"Oh, my God, the President finally did something he should have done. I thought his daily routine was just waking up, going to work, opening his email, checking emails, closing his email, traveling abroad, and sleeping. Actually, before I was defined as a wanted criminal, I once considered running for President to live this kind of God-like life."
Billy said, a cigarette dangling from his mouth, "Believe me, this decision of his will be a significant stroke in his political career. At least in my mind, his status is no less than Franklin's on the hundred-dollar bill. Perhaps when he has another brilliant idea, I'll miss him."
"Susan was right. A bastard like you should be taken out and shot," Mallory retorted without hesitation regarding a social destabilizing factor like Billy.
"Really? If she had taken my advice back then and directly sued Vought International and Homelander, she wouldn't have died so pointlessly like she did." Billy narrowed his eyes, recalling the scene at the time. Susan's head exploded in front of him, exactly like what happened at the hearing a while ago. He didn't believe it was a coincidence. That murderer must have been someone from Vought.
"If she knew what you thought of her, she would definitely be sad." Mallory shook her head.
"Alright, I take back what I just said. I hope she's doing well in Heaven."
Billy opened the car window and threw out the burnt-out cigarette butt.
"Oh, right. Homelander's son, Ryan, might be judged for involuntary manslaughter. Plus your confession video and the fact that he's only ten years old, maybe the judgment will be very light. You'd better be prepared."
To be honest, Mallory didn't understand Billy's actions either, but considering his ability to mess everything up, she accepted it calmly.
"It seems the US Government has bowed to evil capital again." Billy's voice was full of sarcasm.
"Politics is a game of mutual compromise, you'll understand. However, you guys aren't getting nothing out of this. After this, I will use means to whitewash you. Of course, that doesn't include you. After all, with your current reputation, it's no less than The Seven under Vought. You are a true supervillain."
"I'll take that as a compliment."
After the phone call ended, Billy leaned back in his seat, hesitating whether to announce this good news to Hughie and the others.
It wasn't hard to tell from Mallory's words that the government planned to use more legitimate means to strike at Vought, attempting to reduce Vought's social influence.
It must be said, this was a good idea, provided Vought's mole didn't infiltrate the FBSA.
After complaining inwardly, Billy planned to drive away.
Mr. Jervis's gaze just now gave him a very bad feeling, so he decided to rest for a day and announce the good news to Hughie and the others.
...
In the following month, The Boys' original missions were almost suspended. Hughie and the others were also successfully whitewashed under Mallory's operation. When they learned they could leave the Basement and return to Human Society, they were ecstatic. Mother's Milk in the team, immediately after hearing the information, received a phone call from his wife. Listening to the voices of his wife and Daughter on the phone, Mother's Milk, this big man nearly six feet three inches tall, couldn't help but get teary-eyed.
After much deliberation, he decided to submit a departure request to Billy.
"I need to give my Daughter a complete family. I'm sorry."
"Please send my regards to your wife and lovely Daughter. The Boys welcome you back anytime." Hughie, beaming with joy, gave Mother's Milk a warm hug.
Billy, standing aside, silently smoked a cigarette, without saying a word.
Soon, Frenchie brought Kimiko to Billy.
Seeing his hesitant look, Billy immediately understood Frenchie's meaning. "What are you guys planning to do?"
"Travel the world and enjoy life." Frenchie didn't want to make the atmosphere so heavy and deliberately smiled: "Don't worry, we're different from Mother's Milk. When I gamble away everything in Las Vegas, I'll come back."
"Then I can only pray that you become broke quickly."
Besides Mother's Milk, Frenchie, and Kimiko, currently, The Boys only have Leader Billy, Hughie, and Starlight left. Among them, Hughie received an invitation from the FBSA and became a member. And his superior is Victoria Neuman, who is also Senator Neuman. Victoria Neuman provides funds to secretly form a team to monitor Supes.
So Hughie is not only responsible for arresting Supes who cause problems but also serves as the liaison between the FBSA and The Boys.
He has been busier than ever lately, but because he holds significant influence, he can openly and freely arrest Supes. One could say he's busy and happy.
"Stop looking so glum, you know? The moment I sat down in the Office, it felt like my whole being was elevated. Who would have thought that a former teller could transform into a government official? The moment I signed the contract, I almost burst into tears." Hughie sat on his own sofa, truly elated, with an air of confidence and ease written all over his face.
"Esteemed government official, would you like some cookies after your meal?"
Becca carried a plate of homemade cookies from the Kitchen to the Living Room.
"I am honored, Ms. Becca."
After Ryan was released, he was picked up by a Vought vehicle and is currently housed in a secret Safehouse belonging to Vought International. Although Becca couldn't see him, knowing he was safe and sound put her mind at ease.
Seeing Hughie's smug look, Billy couldn't help but sneer: "I feel like I'm seeing a monkey showing off the banana in his hand in front of me."
"Oh, I must warn you, Mr. Billy, that sentence you just said is completely considered racial discrimination. You should be glad I'm not a black person, otherwise I would have the right to sue you."
Hughie picked up a cookie from the coffee table, chewing on it while pressing the remote control for the television.
