Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord

Chapter 285: Chapter 282

Mina brushed aside the hair covering Amelia's ears, revealing the ear underneath. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was wrapped in burlap.

"Amelia, why are your ears wrapped in burlap?" Mina asked in shock.

"Disguise," Amelia replied, tilting her head and half-closing her eyes as she gazed at the cat-eared girl. Her voice was calm and detached. "My elder sister once told me: to live among humans, you must disguise yourself. A good assassin must also disguise themselves. If you want to survive well, you must disguise yourself…"

At that moment, Amelia seemed to transform into a cold, emotionless reading machine, reciting the knowledge her elder sister had imparted.

"Wrapping my ears is a way to hide my distinctive features, allowing me to safely carry out missions among humans." Amelia finished in an icy tone before closing her eyes and lowering her head.

"…" Mina blinked her eyes and gaped at Amelia, her mind churning with waves of thoughts. Just how much knowledge about killing had this girl learned?

"Your sister must be an incredible assassin." Mina said, pursing her lips.

"My elder sister is ranked third." Amelia replied out of nowhere.

Mina noticed something peculiar—whenever the conversation turned to Amelia's elder sister, the usually cold and distant girl would talk a bit more. Otherwise, she wouldn't respond at all. This gave Mina a clue on how to break through Amelia's frosty demeanor.

"What do you mean by third place?" Mina asked curiously.

"The third-ranked assassin among the thousand bounty hunters." Amelia replied coldly.

"Huh?" Mina's arm froze mid-motion. She knew exactly what this ranking referred to because she had once killed an assassin hired by a noble. That assassin had been ranked around 150th.

Of course, that assassin hadn't been particularly strong and was easily dealt with. On the assassin's corpse, she had found a list of rankings, though it only included the top 100. What had left the deepest impression on her was the top ten names.

"Third place…" Mina's blue eyes turned serious. She remembered the name—it was Predator. To confirm her suspicion, she asked in a low voice, "Is your sister the Predator?"

"…" Amelia stayed silent for a full five minutes before nodding quietly. "Mm."

"It's really her…" Mina murmured, her cat ears standing straight up in shock. She looked at Amelia with a complicated expression. With such a background, if her identity were exposed, at least several high-ranking nobles—earls and above—would come hunting her down in Xiyang City.

To think, the Predator only accepted high-bounty missions. But such high bounties often meant targeting nobles.

From what Mina knew of the major incidents, there were at least two cases where future heirs of grand dukes were assassinated. Both were killed silently in the dead of night, their throats pierced without a trace of the assassin.

It had taken only three years for the Predator to earn her infamous title due to her ghost-like abilities, as if she descended from the skies to strike. She was wanted by kingdoms across the continent, with a bounty as high as 5,000 gold coins. The assassin rankings were based solely on bounty amounts, and hers was enough to claim the third spot.

The most critical point, however, was that no one knew what the Predator looked like—not even whether the assassin was male or female. The only consistent detail was that a sudden gust of wind would rise before the target was killed.

But now, a young girl was claiming that the Predator was her sister. If this information spread, it would undoubtedly cause chaos. Countless bounty hunters would swarm like vultures.

After all, assassins were famed for stealth, not necessarily their ability to win direct confrontations with bounty hunters. Moreover, assassins were considered a specialized branch of bounty hunters.

"Is the Predator really your biological sister?" Mina asked, her curiosity piqued.

"…" Amelia remained silent for a moment, then gave a barely perceptible nod. If Mina hadn't been watching her so intently, she might have missed the movement entirely.

Mina's feelings were now a tangled mess. Sitting before her was the biological sister of a legendary assassin—a super-assassin.

She sighed, thinking about the beast-eared girls in the castle. On reflection, this didn't seem all that surprising. After all, even Annie, the youngest princess of the Valtoria Kingdom, was here. Adding the younger sister of a super-assassin to the mix didn't seem that extraordinary anymore.

"Can I ask… why did you end up becoming a slave?" Mina ventured nervously. She knew it was a sensitive topic, like peeling back a scab.

"I was tricked," Amelia replied coolly.

"Huh?" Mina's eyes widened in shock. How could she say something like that so nonchalantly? A killer got tricked? How was that even possible?

Looking at Amelia's thin, frail body, Mina suddenly remembered—this girl was only about ten years old. Even someone older, like Ayesha, who was twenty or twenty one, could fall for a scam. What chance did someone of Amelia's age have?

Mina didn't press further, sensing that Amelia wouldn't give more details anyway.

Her instincts, honed over years of observing people, told her there was more to the story—something Amelia wasn't saying. Whatever had happened, it had likely been a significant event that led to her being sold into slavery.

"Why would your sister leave you all alone?" Mina asked, her voice tinged with sharpness.

"I'm too weak. Following them would only slow them down and get in the way." Amelia replied coldly.

"Slow them down?" Mina frowned deeply. So young, yet already so determined to prove herself? She quickly pressed further. "Was your sister going on some dangerous mission?"

"To kill a dragon," Amelia said flatly. Her green eyes dimmed slightly as she thought of her sister's grand ambitions. Compared to that, she saw herself as nothing but a burden.

"A dragon???" Mina gasped, her surprise written all over her face.

"Yes," Amelia replied, recounting what her sister had said to her, her tone calm and emotionless.

"…" Mina immediately understood. Whether or not the dragon was real, it was undoubtedly an extremely dangerous mission. Now she saw clearly why the Predator had chosen not to bring Amelia along.

Who would bring their young sister along on such dangerous adventures? It was unreasonable, yet Amelia seemed fixated on blaming herself. Still, something must have happened along the way that led to her becoming a slave.

Mina decided not to press the matter further. Her curiosity now shifted toward Amelia's true race—or, more intriguingly, what race the Predator might belong to.

"Can I unwrap the burlap?" Mina asked gently.

For beastfolk, wrapping their ears was a common way to hide their identity among humans. The downside, however, was that it made their ears uncomfortable—sometimes even painful.

Looking down at Amelia's cold, expressionless face, Mina saw no trace of discomfort. It was as if Amelia had long grown accustomed to the practice.

"…" Amelia remained silent for a moment before replying flatly, "Go ahead."

"I'll start unwrapping it, then," Mina said softly. She brushed aside Amelia's damp, silvery-white hair to reveal the burlap, already wet from the rain. Carefully, she began untying the tightly wound cloth.

"What? How is this possible?" Mina gasped, her mouth hanging open in shock. Without another word, she moved behind Amelia, her eyes shimmering with disbelief as they fixed on Amelia's thin, frail back.

For a long moment, she was utterly speechless.
