Chapter 93: Chapter 94: Into the Abyss
Chapter 94: Into the Abyss
The Southern Provinces – Demon Incursion
The southern provinces of the Holy Kingdom were unrecognizable. Once a fertile region dotted with villages and lush farmland, it had been transformed into a smoldering wasteland. Rivers ran black with corruption, the air reeked of sulfur, and the sky above was a constant swirl of dark clouds.
The Hero Party, accompanied by an elite detachment of knights and mages, arrived at the outskirts of Fellmoor, a key town overrun by demons. The remnants of the local garrison greeted them, their armor dented and their eyes hollow from days of unrelenting battle.
"Heroes," the garrison commander, Captain Alric, said, bowing deeply. His voice was strained, and blood seeped from a hastily bandaged wound on his arm. "You've come at a dire time. The demons are unlike anything we've faced before. They attack in waves, tireless and merciless."
Derek stepped forward, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "We're here to push them back. What's the situation?"
Alric gestured toward the broken walls of Fellmoor. "Their main force is camped outside the town. Shadow Knights, brutes, and worse. We've heard whispers of something... unnatural leading them, a Herald, perhaps."
Sarah paled. "A Herald? That's no ordinary demon."
Ryan tightened his grip on his spear. "We've dealt with worse before. We'll deal with this."
Alric hesitated. "It's not just the demons. The people are terrified, broken. Even if we win here, I fear the damage to their spirits is already done."
Derek nodded solemnly. "Then we'll give them hope. Let's show them what we can do."
The First Engagement
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the Hero Party led the charge toward the demon encampment. Derek, at the forefront, raised his blade, its holy enchantments glowing with golden light. "For Elarion!" he shouted, and the knights echoed his cry, their voices rallying the beleaguered soldiers.
The demons were waiting. Shadow Knights surged forward, their cursed blades gleaming with dark energy. Behind them, Titanic Brutes lumbered into view, their footsteps shaking the ground.
Derek's blade clashed with the lead Shadow Knight, the impact sending sparks flying. His movements were precise, each swing of his sword driving the demon back. "Sarah, cover me!" he shouted.
Sarah, standing near the rear, raised her staff. "Holy Barrier!" she cried, and a dome of golden light enveloped Derek and his immediate surroundings, deflecting incoming attacks.
Ryan flanked the brutes, his spear glowing with mana. He thrust it into a weak point in one brute's armor, causing the creature to roar in pain. "These things don't go down easy!" he grunted.
From the cliffs above, the mages unleashed a barrage of spells. Fireballs, lightning strikes, and ice shards rained down on the demon ranks, scattering their formations.
But then, the air grew colder. The demonic ranks parted, and a towering figure emerged. An Oblivion Herald, cloaked in swirling shadows, wielding a staff that pulsed with ancient runes.
Derek cursed under his breath. "Everyone, focus on that thing! If we don't take it down, we're finished!"
A Hero's Struggle
The Oblivion Herald raised its staff, summoning a wave of shadow energy that surged toward the Holy Kingdom's forces. Sarah reacted quickly, her staff glowing as she channeled a counterspell. "Divine Radiance!" she cried, and a beam of light clashed with the shadows, neutralizing the attack.
Ryan darted forward, using his agility to close the distance. He hurled his spear at the Herald, but the creature deflected it with a wave of its hand, sending Ryan sprawling.
"Damn it!" Ryan muttered, scrambling to his feet. "This thing's no joke."
Elena, the party's mage, stepped up, her hands glowing with arcane energy. "Keep it distracted! I need time to charge this spell!"
The knights and soldiers threw themselves at the Herald, their attacks chipping away at its defenses but at great cost. Each swing of the Herald's staff unleashed devastating shockwaves, sending men and women flying.
Derek fought his way to the Herald, his sword glowing brighter with every step. "Your time ends here, monster!" he roared, leaping into the air. His blade struck true, piercing the Herald's chest.
The creature shrieked, its form flickering as dark energy spilled from the wound. But even as it faltered, it lashed out, sending Derek crashing to the ground.
"Derek!" Sarah screamed, rushing to his side.
"I'm fine," Derek grunted, blood dripping from his forehead. "Finish it!"
Elena unleashed her spell, a massive firestorm that engulfed the Herald. When the flames subsided, nothing remained but ash.
The soldiers cheered, but the Hero Party knew the battle was far from over.
The Aftermath
As dawn broke over Fellmoor, the battlefield was eerily quiet. The surviving soldiers began the grim task of collecting their dead. Captain Alric approached the Hero Party, his expression a mix of relief and exhaustion.
"You've given us a chance," he said. "The people will remember this."
Derek nodded, though his expression remained somber. "We'll hold the line here. But this war is just beginning."
Sarah knelt beside a wounded soldier, her healing magic glowing faintly as she worked. "We can't keep fighting like this," she said quietly. "The demons are too strong."
Ryan placed a hand on her shoulder. "We'll find a way. We always do."
The Demon King's Fury
Far to the east, in the heart of the corrupted lands, the Demon King watched the battle through a scrying orb. His crimson eyes burned with rage as the Herald's defeat played out before him.
"These humans are persistent," he growled. "But their resilience will be their undoing."
Syvalis, the Shadowmancer, stepped forward. "Shall we deploy the Titans, my lord? They are eager to feed."
"Not yet," the Demon King said, his voice like grinding stone. "We will let them taste victory. And then we will drown them in despair."
