Chapter 939: Thank You
Dracula stared at Lilith while furrowing his eyebrows. "You…"
Lilith nodded her head. "I am Lilith, a person who was born before Eve. However, it's not wrong for you to call me your daughter as well…"
"What do you mean?" Dracula raised his eyebrows.
Lilith smiled. "Once you turned your daughter into a vampire, she merged with me. Whether I was this Lilith or your Lilith… even I don't know. Both of our consciousnesses entangle… to the point where I don't even mind calling you my father."
"!!!" Dracula was taken aback by the explanation. He understood the severity of the situation.
On the one hand, she looked like his daughter. On the other hand, she was and wasn't his daughter.
If it was a normal father, he would have a hard time choosing whether Lilith was his daughter or not.
But for Dracula, he simply nodded his head and said, "I see. I understand the situation, Lilith."
This was Dracula's choice. By calling her name directly instead of calling her his daughter, Dracula indirectly told Lilith that he would recognize her as a stranger.
Lilith nodded. "If that's your choice, I shall respect it."
"Still, since you have been summoned into this world, I should at least tell you about the current situation of the Ashton family."
"Sure."
…
While the two were having an earnest talk, Nathan and Selena were actually having a stroll under the night sky. They had been scheduled to return in the morning, so they chose to have a walk together.
"Are you sure you don't want to have some time with your father?" Nathan asked.
Selena shook her head. "There will be a lot of time for us to talk, whether on the road or once we return. I'm sure it'll be much easier to talk that way."
"I see." Nathan awkwardly turned around, wondering what he should say after this. He couldn't really push her back to face her father.
"Nathan…" Selena grabbed his sleeve.
Nathan halted his step and turned his head around.
"Thank you."
Nathan raised his eyebrows. "Wha—!"
Selena shook her head, stopping him from continuing. He probably wanted to say there was no need for thanks between them.
After all, Nathan wanted to create a family where saving each other's lives was something as natural as breathing instead of something big.
However, Selena stopped him. There were things that should be put into words. And this thank you was one of them.
She once desperately tried to become strong. She did her best and clung to that single rope.
It all changed when she met Nathan during the terrorist attack. Nathan felt like a wall that she had to overcome, but when he helped her during their first school event, she realized Nathan was something different.
For her, Nathan was not a wall. Instead, someone who walked alongside her. They both were trying to walk faster, while the other was trying not to get left behind.
It was because they pushed each other to the limit that they practiced so hard, to the point where they almost collapsed. But after that training, they could gain so much satisfaction that they felt everything was worth it.
When he mentioned Lilith, Nathan lit up a torch in her heart, bearing all the hope.
And this time, she truly did it. She summoned Lilith, a vampire progenitor. With Lilith, the Ashton family would undergo a massive change.
The one who was responsible for that change was Nathan.
There was also her father. If not for Nathan doing everything he could for this expedition, there was no way she could save her father this quickly, especially with the increasing number of aliens.
That was why, even if Nathan stopped her, she had to say it.
"Thank you." Selena held his hand and put it on her cheek. She just smiled as tears were forming in the corner of her eyes. "Thank you for being with me, thank you for giving me hope, thank you for everything."
What Nathan had done for her was beyond the words 'Thank you.' Nathan had even challenged fate just to save her father.
She felt ashamed that she could only utter these two words. Her teacher told her to ask Nathan to join the fight against the Divine Hand, but she was afraid she couldn't do it. There was no way for her to ask such a thing after saving her father. She had no other choice but to disappoint her teacher this time.
Selena hugged Nathan. There were things she couldn't express with just words.
Nathan's gaze turned tender. He hugged her back while stroking her hair, as if telling her it was over. They had done it.
All that burden had finally been lifted from her shoulder. The sudden realization that her objective had been accomplished made her feet suddenly go limp.
"Ooh?" Nathan raised his voice, making sure she didn't fall.
"I'm sorry…" Selena smiled wryly. "The realization that everything is over suddenly makes me feel weak, as if all my energy is leaving me."
"Ahahaha. It's natural." Nathan chuckled. "I'm really glad that you're able to accomplish your goal."
"Yeah, me too." Selena paused for a moment. "However, I still have another goal."
"Oh? What is that?"
"To stand beside you." Selena just showed him a big smile. That smile carried the pureness of her intention.
To stand beside him meant no matter what happened, she would be there as an equal. In other words, if Nathan took a step forward, she would also take the same step. If Nathan became a world class summoner, she would become one as well.
It was a bigger goal than saving her father because Nathan planned to walk farther than anyone else in this world or even go to the alien world himself.
Now that the first objective was over, Selena seemed to be more honest in showing her emotion.
The two looked each other in the eye, having a tacit agreement. This was not the end. This was just a new beginning toward their new end, sealing their vow with a kiss.
