Chapter 27: Captive Trade
Ronald dismissed a few people to handle some tasks and plopped down onto a fur-lined sofa. With a thought, he asked, "System, are you interested in taking these prisoners off my hands?"
During his second entry into the space, he had encountered a tribal attack with over a hundred people. With Ah Qiang, Cuihua, and Ashu all lost to the outside world, the vast base had dwindled to just five people—clearly insufficient. Following the principle of "the more, the better," he captured a dozen or so barely alive prisoners, planning to heal them and recruit them into the fold. However, on second thought, the food supply at the colony was running low, and he didn't want to feed a bunch of useless mouths without them contributing anything. It would be much simpler to sell them off and be done with it.
"The system offers two ways to handle prisoners," the voice of the system chimed in. "The first is to trade them for silver. Depending on the prisoner's attributes, you can sell them for anywhere between 500 and 2000 silver."
"Really?" Ronald's eyes lit up. That was a decent source of income.
"The second option is to convert the prisoners into civilians. For a fee of 100 silver per prisoner, you can brainwash them, and they will be transformed into normal civilians after being removed from this space. The brainwashed prisoners will have all their attributes reset to zero, and the system will implant relevant memories. Once they leave the space, they automatically become a civilian under your domain."
Ronald paused for a moment, then quickly dismissed the second option.
Between silver and civilians, he made the obvious choice—silver.
With 500 silver, he could equip himself with a set of low-tier gear, which could be sold for a considerable sum of gold on Tianheng Continent. Once he had the money, recruiting more people would be easy.
Rising from the luxurious entertainment room, he called for Cuihuan and lazily strolled over to the prisoner quarters.
Cuihuan was a short-haired beauty, and the younger sister of Cuihua. The two women looked somewhat alike. Cuihuan was at the first level of the Body Refining realm, with decent attributes—essentially a weaker version of Cuihua.
The prisoner quarters were equally extravagant, as being held here felt more like a luxury stay than a cell.
There were seventeen prisoners in total. Ronald examined each one's attributes. Only two stood out as relatively decent; the rest were worthless.
"System, sell all of them except for the ones named Damu and Baiyang."
"System prompt: You are about to sell fifteen prisoners for a total of 13,000 silver. Do you confirm?"
"Confirm."
A flash of white light enveloped the prisoners, and they vanished, leaving behind only two calm-looking young men.
"13,000 silver? Not bad. That's enough to recruit a colonist."
Satisfied, Ronald nodded and said to Cuihuan, "Feed and pamper these two. Recruit them as soon as possible. Once they're done, strip everything of value from this room!"
"Understood, Master!"
Seven days later, while Ronald was practicing his swordsmanship in the entertainment room, the base alarm suddenly blared. At the same time, the system's voice echoed in his mind: "A group of Hunter Fleet members has been air-dropped near the base. They will begin their attack on the colony shortly. Prepare yourself."
"The Hunter Fleet!" Ronald's heart skipped a beat. Unlike the tribal raids, the Hunter Fleet was a formidable force in the entire ringworld. Equipped with technology far surpassing the industrial age, they wielded long-range, fast-firing Hunter Rifles, and wore heavy, high-defense Hunter Armor. They were a tough opponent.
"Everyone, take up defensive positions!" Ronald shouted, racing toward the defensive lines outside the base.
Moments later, the remaining five colonists had taken their positions. Ronald stood atop a distant watchtower, observing the unfolding battle.
