Chapter 30: Limitations of the Weakness: Breaking Free from Imagination's Chains
With A Qiang and Cuihua guiding the way, they finally stopped walking in circles. Ronald's mind began to clear.
Standing before a stone monument engraved with the deep crimson character "Kai" (Open), he realized where he had found himself.
"Xiu, Sheng, Shang, Du, Jing, Si, Jing, Kai… This is the ancient Eight Trigrams Formation!"
Ronald was certain they had stumbled upon the legendary Bagua Formation.
After a moment of hesitation, he turned to his companions. "Do you both remember the general positions of each stone?"
A Qiang and Cuihua exchanged a glance, before Cuihua spoke up. "Master, I remember the rough directions, but I can't guarantee their exact accuracy."
"That'll do. Listen carefully. Take me to the first stone with the character 'Si' (Death) on it."
"Understood!"
With their affirmation, A Qiang and Cuihua each took one of Ronald's hands and hurried through the mist.
"Crack!"
They froze, the sound of something breaking beneath their feet. Ronald looked down to find a yellowed bone fragment, likely from some creature, crushed under his step.
"Master, look! There's a weapon!"
Peering through the mist, Ronald saw a weapon that resembled a halberd—its blade gleaming with cold light. It was clearly a high-quality weapon.
He bent down to pick it up, but when he tried, it didn't budge.
"A Qiang, give it a try."
A Qiang grasped the weapon with one hand, but it only shuddered slightly.
"Master, this weapon weighs at least a thousand pounds."
"A thousand pounds?"
Ronald was stunned. How could a weapon weigh so much? His lack of strength had limited his imagination.
"This is some treasure!"
He marveled, then turned to A Qiang. "You carry it. Cuihua, lead the way."
"… Huh?"
After a while, the trio arrived at the stone with the character "Si" carved on it.
"Cuihua, how long did it take us to walk from the 'Kai' stone to here?"
Cuihua thought for a moment before answering. "Master, excluding the time spent carrying the halberd, about fifteen minutes."
"Good. Now, we'll retrace our steps. We'll walk for seven and a half minutes, and keep track of the time."
"Yes!"
Ronald guided them through the mist, leading them east for a while, then west. When they stopped by a stone monument, he was certain of one thing.
"As I thought, these eight stones form a circular pattern!"
"Now, we must follow the circular path and walk behind each stone to reach the 'Sheng' stone. Are you two ready?"
Cuihua nodded. "Don't worry, Master."
The trio moved forward, walking for about half an hour. They passed by the 'Kai,' 'Shang,' 'Si,' and 'Du' stones before stopping at the 'Sheng' stone. Along the way, A Qiang noticed a long spear.
The spear seemed to be of high quality, though it wasn't as heavy as the halberd—just about a hundred pounds.
"Take it, Cuihua, don't let it go to waste."
After some time, they finally arrived at the 'Jing' stone. Ronald took a deep breath and said, "Straight ahead. We're going to keep walking. We'll make it out!"
They didn't know how long they walked, but suddenly, Ronald felt a dizzying sensation. When he regained focus, they had arrived on a mountain path.
The moon was bright in the sky, casting a soft glow over them. The evening breeze gently caressed their skin, as soothing as a lover's touch.
Ronald smiled. In his previous life, he had read some obscure books on the Bagua Formation, and never imagined the knowledge would come in handy now.
Finally, they were free from the mist—surviving their ordeal.
