Chapter 35: The Elven Princess: A Journey of Power and Fate
Half a day later, Ronald and his group of fifty men, dressed in casual clothes and riding tall steeds, arrived at the human village.
Upon seeing their formidable presence, the villagers immediately mistook them for mountain bandits and began to sound the alarm, rallying their defenses.
As Ronald observed the shabby farmers before him, he cupped his fist and called out from his horse, "Do not panic, good people. We are not bandits, but come to do business with you."
An elder from the crowd shouted, "Great King, we have neither gold nor grain, no trade to offer. Please, leave us be!"
Ronald furrowed his brow and nodded to Liu Long beside him.
"Bring it forth!"
At Liu Long's command, a soldier carried a wooden chest and placed it on the ground between them. When opened, it revealed a pile of gleaming silver coins.
On Tianheng Continent, silver coins were as widely accepted as gold coins. Ten silver coins equaled the purchasing power of one gold coin. The chest contained no less than a thousand silver coins—enough to buy a month's worth of food for the entire village!
The villagers were momentarily blinded by the glittering silver. The elder trembled and said, "Great Kings, what is the meaning of this...?"
It seemed the villagers had already assumed that these people were indeed bandits.
Ronald calmly replied, "Old man, we wish to purchase your pigs and sheep. I won't take advantage of you—six silver coins for each pig, four for each sheep. What do you say? I'll take as many as you have."
The villagers exchanged glances. The price was higher than market value, and with this much silver, they'd be able to survive the winter without worry.
"Well... Great King, your generosity is appreciated, but we don't have many pigs or sheep..."
"That's fine, sell me whatever you have. Do you happen to know where else I can find pigs and sheep?"
The elder hesitated, then answered, "There's a goblin tribe about twenty miles east of here. They should have plenty... If you need more, you'll have to go farther to Yunlan City."
"Yunlan City..." Ronald was about to reply when a loud laugh suddenly rang out from afar.
"Ha! No need to go to Yunlan City! We're here!"
Looking in the direction of the voice, Ronald saw a group of small, green-skinned goblins pushing a cart toward them.
The leader of the goblins looked at Ronald and his men. Though they appeared to be intimidating, the goblins stood their ground. After a quick glance at the cart, the goblin leader straightened his back.
"Hear this, humans! By the command of the princess, we are here to recruit your village's strong men to escort her back to the kingdom!"
"Princess!?"
Everyone was startled. The elder stammered, "Old Wu, are you saying the one in the cart is the princess?"
Wu Lao Ba, the goblin leader, puffed up his chest proudly.
"Isn't that obvious? Old Jiang, hurry and gather your people! Don't delay the princess's return—do you think you can bear the consequences if we're late?"
They were in the territory of the Elven Kingdom, and the princess they spoke of was none other than the elven princess.
With a side glance at Ronald's group, the goblin leader barked, "And as for you lot—stop your business dealings! I'll be taking these silver coins now. You'll escort the princess back immediately!"
"Who do you think you're talking to?" Ronald's eyes darkened, and his voice was icy. "If this is truly the princess, let her step down and show herself."
Those who knew Ronald's temperament recognized the warning signs—he was on the brink of losing his temper.
"How dare you speak to me like that!" The goblin leader snarled, his voice filled with arrogance. "Do you want to start a rebellion?!"
Before Ronald could react, a cold flash shot out from the distance!
"Clang!" The sound of a long arrow striking the ground echoed. A tall, handsome elven man stood atop the cart, holding a longbow, his cold gaze fixed on Ronald.
It was clear from his stance that the elf wasn't afraid to kill at the slightest provocation.
From behind them, the sound of swords being unsheathed rang out. The combat unit drew their steel longswords, ready to charge at a moment's notice. The tension in the air was palpable.
The elven man spoke in a chilling tone, "What now, lowly humans? The princess is in the cart. What else do you have to say?"
"I don't care what you were doing before," the elf continued. "If you are in my kingdom's territory, you will obey my commands. Now, follow the cart and escort the princess back. If you do it well, you'll be rewarded."
The Elves, as a high-tier race, carried great weight in their words. To them, humans were nothing but slaves.
Seeing Ronald's silence, the elven man grew suspicious.
"What? Are you disobeying orders? You'd better comply, or we'll make an example of you. Do you not remember what happened when the despicable humans from the Yunqin Empire attacked a royal convoy? Once the princess returns, a great army will be dispatched to wipe them out. If you surrender now, perhaps we'll even give you a territory of your own. Otherwise, I'll destroy you on the spot!"
