Chapter 45: Golden Card Unlocked
Inside the cave, Ronald sat cross-legged on a slab of green stone. A moment later, his vision went black as he entered the Ring World.
Ding!System notification: Host has completed the construction of the Administrative Center and become a territorial lord. Reward: 1 Item Card, All Colonists' Strength Increased by 10%.
As soon as Ronald entered the space, the system's voice echoed in his mind.
Ding!Colonist Cuihua's strength had reached a bottleneck. She has now broken through to the third level of the Body Refining Realm.
Ronald's heart surged with joy.He had been worried that his colonists wouldn't be able to improve their strength anytime soon. It seemed that, aside from buying cultivation techniques at high prices, there were other ways.
He made his way to the entertainment room, where Cuihua was engrossed in watching television. Ronald didn't feel like reprimanding her, so he plopped down on the couch and asked, "Cuihua, how's the recruitment going for those hunters?"
"Ah, Master, you're back!" Cuihua jumped up. "I've recruited eight members from the Hunter Fleet, as you ordered!"
Ronald smiled at the news. He had been busy training in his room ever since assigning the task, and even had an encounter with a small group of hunters, where he earned a good profit and captured a few prisoners. He had learned that while hunters might not have many special skills, their combat prowess was excellent. An idea began to form in his mind.
"Eight? Not bad. Get them all injected with the gene enhancer," Ronald instructed.
"Yes, Master."
Once Cuihua left, Ronald wasted no time and returned to his room to continue his training.
The Qingyun Mystical Dao not only focused on refining the body but also contained secret techniques. Since he was a spiritual form in the Ring World, training his body wasn't as effective, so he chose to focus on the secret techniques instead.
Currently, he was practicing a lightness skill that, once mastered, would allow him to move like a swallow—climbing walls and walking on rooftops without a care. It would certainly come in handy in the future.
Three days later, an alarm blared across the base.
Warning! A group of mechanical enemies has been air-dropped near the base. They will begin their attack shortly. Prepare for battle!
Ronald's heart sank."Mechanical race!"
He rushed out of his bedroom and immediately began preparing the defenses. The mechanical race, as feared as the Hunter Fleet, was known for its tough exterior. Handling them was always a challenge.
Moments later, the battle began.
The first wave of attackers was a group of mechanical mantises. These robots, armed with energy sniper rifles, had incredible range and solid close-combat abilities. Their shots could reach farther than the automatic machine guns on the walls, "Bang! Bang!" they fired, hitting the walls with deadly precision. The durability of the drone turrets began to quickly deteriorate.
Ronald's eyes narrowed. "Quick! Don't just stand there—use the mortars, blast them to hell!"
"Yes, Master!"
The newly recruited hunters sprang into action, manning the mortars and launching shell after shell.
Boom! Boom! Boom!A barrage of explosive shells filled the air, and the area outside the walls erupted into a series of fiery explosions. Seven or eight mechanical mantises were blown to pieces, but one of them shot out a green glow.
"An Item Card!" Ronald's heart leaped in excitement.
But that was only the beginning. Behind the mantises, the real threat emerged—mechanical centipedes! These massive creatures had incredibly high armor and were armed with rapid-fire machine guns and grenade launchers. A misstep in handling them could result in catastrophic losses.
As the centipedes entered firing range, Ronald roared, "Fire!"
Rat-tat-tat!A volley of bullets rained down, but the two centipedes were nearly indestructible. They took the full brunt of concentrated fire and, just before their deaths, unleashed a hailstorm of gunfire.
Ding! Ding! One of the drone turrets was blasted apart, and a burst of bullets struck Colonist Kaixuan, hitting his right arm and rendering him combat-ineffective.
Ronald's eyes widened. This was the first time anyone had been injured in such an attack in the Ring World.
"Kaixuan, fall back and treat your wounds!" he shouted.
"Yes, Master!" Kaixuan replied before retreating.
The battle raged on, as more centipedes crawled into the base. What followed was a chaotic exchange of gunfire. This was the most intense battle Ronald had faced since entering the Ring World. The fierce gunfight lasted nearly an hour. The base suffered significant losses—ten drone turrets were destroyed, and seven colonists were injured—before the mechanical race was finally defeated.
The risks had been high, but the rewards were even higher.
At that moment, Ronald held a golden, gleaming card in his hand.
