Chapter 7: From Krypton
"Nice to meet you, Kara…" said the soilder.
He quickly lunged forward.
Kara dodged, barely missing the spear's tip. She moved fast—but not her usual speed. Every movement took effort, like running through water.
She threw a punch—he deflected it easily.
He slashed wide. Kara ducked low, spun, and kicked him back—just enough distance to break the Kryptonite's strongest effect.
Her breathing was sharp now, sweat on her brow.
He came again.
She blocked, twisted—but her knees buckled slightly. She was slowing. Not from injury—but from the kryptonite.
Just as he raised the spear again—
"HEY!"
A metal crate hurled through the air.
CRASH!
It slammed into the soldier's head, sending him sprawling forward.
Jake burst in from the shadows and tackled him, slamming him into the wall with his full weight.
The Kryptonite spear skidded across the floor—away from Kara.
Janet didn't hesitate. She rushed forward, grabbed the spear, and flung it down the hallway with all her strength. It clattered out of sight.
The moment it left the area, Kara sucked in a full breath. Her strength surged back—not fully, but enough.
Janet rushed to Kara's side.
"You okay?"
"I'm good," Kara panted, still catching her breath. "Just… keep that thing away from me."
She stood up slowly, her strength returning. Across from her, the soldier groaned and pushed himself up too, looking dazed. He glanced toward the Kryptonite spear now lying far down the hall—and realized he had no leverage anymore.
His expression shifted—fear flickering behind the visor.
"Oh… fuck. I'm sorry," he muttered, raising his hands in surrender. "I didn't know—I thought…"
Kara stepped forward, her voice low and sharp. "Who sent you? How did you know my name?"
The soldier swallowed hard. "It was a guy. I don't know his name—I swear. I didn't talk to him directly… I was just told to watch for 'the Kryptonian.' He knew you'd be here."
Kara narrowed her eyes. "How did he know?"
"He… he knew you were coming for the antidote. That you wanted it for something important," the soldier said quickly. "That's all I know, I swear."
Kara glanced at Janet and Jake.
They gave her a silent nod.
Without another word, Kara stepped in and delivered a sharp, controlled punch—just enough to knock him out cold.
The soldier crumpled to the floor.
For a beat, no one moved. The hallway was still, the tension settling like dust around them.
Then Kara looked ahead.
The corridor beyond the fallen soldiers stretched on, lined with reinforced steel vault doors—each numbered from 1 to 60. Red lights blinked over security locks.
They hadn't reached Vault 55 yet.
They still had to find it.
Kara nodded toward the hallway. "Let's move before anyone else shows up."
Together, the three of them stepped over the unconscious guards and headed deeper into the containment wing—toward the vaults… and whatever waited inside Vault 55.
They pressed forward through the reinforced corridor—vaults lining both sides, marked by thick metal doors and glowing numbers.
Vault 49… 50… 51…
They moved quickly.
And Finally, they stopped.
Vault 55.
A metal door embedded into the wall like a sealed tomb. Beside it: a familiar keycard reader, identical to the one they'd seen above.
Janet groaned. "Ugh. Not again. Kara—"
"Hold up," Jake said, already reaching into his pocket. "I grabbed this from one of the soldiers earlier—figured it might come in handy."
He held up a black security card, slightly scuffed but still intact.
"Maybe this is it."
He swiped the card.
BEEP. CLICK.
The vault unlocked with a heavy clunk, the door sliding open with a mechanical hiss.
Inside: a compact containment room, sleek and sterile. Cabinets lined every wall, labeled with glowing white text. Shelves were filled with sealed vials, digital readers, and medical containers. It looked like a high-security storage for biochemical agents.
They moved fast.
On one cabinet:
"01 — Antidote: Green Poison."
"There!" Janet rushed forward and opened it, pulling out three vials. Jake grabbed more and tucked them carefully into his bag.
As they worked, Kara glanced around the room.
But Then—
Her eyes landed on something.
Further down the shelf, nearly obscured behind other canisters, was a black container with a bright warning label:
"RED KRYPTONITE – HANDLE WITH LEVEL 5 CLEARANCE."
Kara froze.
Her pulse quickened. She stepped over and opened it.
Empty.
Her heart sank.
Someone had taken it. Or maybe it was never there to begin with.
Either way, it felt like a warning.
"Kara!" Janet's voice pulled her back. "Let's go!"
Kara backed away, silently, and followed the others out.
The vault door began to seal behind them with a heavy hiss.
Then Suddenly, the alarm blared—a harsh, echoing wail that rang through every corridor. Red warning lights flashed across the ceiling.
Jake flinched. "Ah, shit… they found us?"
But the voice that followed wasn't about them.
"Alert! Alert! This is an emergency protocol. Containment 2 has been breached. A creature has escaped its enclosure. Repeat: containment breach, priority threat level—5."
Janet's eyes widened. "How many alien species do they even have here?!"
Jake grabbed her arm. "Doesn't matter. That's not our problem right now—we need to go!"
They bolted out of the containment wing, racing down the metal hallway. Footsteps pounded. Lights flickered. But the path ahead was oddly clear—every guard, every scientist was running the other way, likely toward the breach.
"Where's the elevator?" Janet shouted.
Jake scanned the corridor, mentally retracing their steps. "There! Other side—just past the lab junction."
They sprinted toward it.
But before they could reach the junction—Kara stopped.
"Wait."
Janet and Jake spun around. "Kara?"
She didn't move.
Her eyes burned—not with fear, but with resolve. "That red alien… I'm taking it with me."
"What?" Jake blinked.
Kara clenched her jaw. "Whatever that thing was—whoever its parent is… it's already killed before, trying to find it. If I leave it here, it'll just come again. More people could die. I have to try… I have to give it a chance."
Janet looked at her, surprised. "Are you sure?"
Kara nodded, her voice quieter now. "It's just a baby. It didn't do anything wrong."
There was a pause—then Jake gave a nod. "Alright. Let's do it fast."
"No. You guys go," Kara said firmly. "Get back to the tunnel—I've got this."
Janet hesitated. "Wait, are you sure?"
Kara gave a steady nod.
Janet exchanged a look with Jake. Then they both nodded back.
"Okay. Be safe," Janet said.
"You too," Kara replied.
Without wasting another second, Janet and Jake turned and took off down the corridor, racing back toward the tunnels.
Kara lingered, watching the flickering red lights overhead—the alarm still screaming through the facility. She took a breath, bracing herself.
Then she flew.
Straight toward the last place she'd seen the red alien.
There it was—still lying in the cage, unconscious.
Kara didn't waste time. She broke open the lock, stepped inside, and gently lifted the small alien into her arms. She was about to fly off when something made her freeze.
A shape moved in the shadows below.
The escaped creature.
It turned—and Kara instantly recognized it. Dragon-like, with four enormous wings and glowing eyes.
Her heart sank.
"A War Kite…" she breathed.
A creature from Krypton—bred for battle. Engineered to be fast, ruthless, and nearly unstoppable. But how was it here? On Earth?
